A team of scientists have set their sights on a crazy goal: drilling straight into the magma chamber underneath an active volcano in Iceland to tap into virtually unlimited geothermal power. The effort is part of a grand plan called the Iceland Deep Drilling Project. Its participating scientists aren't just looking for thrills; they're on a mission to understand the physics deep within the Earth that could revolutionise our energy future. But this is no ordinary project; here in Iceland, discovery and danger go hand in hand. The potential rewards are huge, but so are the challenges they'll face.
Thank you to Gylfi from @JustIcelandic for the great aerial shots over Grindavik, subscribe to his channel for the latest updates on the eruptions in Iceland and buy him a coffee if you like it!

Could they ever use water power infused with tiny rocks and minerals with little chunks of diamond and have a vacum in the middle of it to suck up the water and minerals and break them down than filter out bigger chunks to be reused to drill deeper

They will only be able to go so deep before their drill bit tip softens from the heat of friction and the surrounding heat. That or the rock will turn into peanut butter goop..

  • @canadiankrispybacon1450

So what if they do get down!? To pull enough material to make a significant impact, the sheer amount of material they would remove…what do they replace it with? It’s like the waves crashing against the cliff walls, continuing to undercut…until it’s eventual collapse! If they get down there, find what they’re looking for…they won’t stop, we all know that greed, gluttony and power will surpass any sense of knowing when to stop and get the hell out! We all know this is not about (yes there will of course be the odd purest) science, as at the end of the day..💰💰 will be it’s only motivation to continue. Didn’t the Russians dig deep, literally opening up Hell, as this place had to be abandoned, 🔥🔥 for decades 🤔

1000°C would be peanuts with tungsten... 😂 There is way more heat in magma than that I guess. According to wikipedia it's up to 1200°C and some other websides saying it's 1600°C peak. This would be lower than the meltingpoint of tungstencarbit. I'm not a drilling expert, but at least if costs doesn't matter this sonds like a perfect solution... 😅 you can even remain the tube in the chamber to habe an access.

Grok spree, and by "little," I mean they're drilling one of the world's deepest holes. why, you ask? Are they trying to reach the Earth's core to roast marshmallows? Or perhaps they've misplaced something and need to find it? The answer is a bit more grounded (pun intended). China is drilling these holes for two main reasons: oil and science. Who would have thought? Firstly, the oil. The holes are located in the oil-rich Xinjiang region, which is a bit like finding a treasure chest in your backyard. China is hungry for natural resources, and they're hoping to uncover more oil and gas deposits deep beneath the Earth's crust. It's like a giant game of "Where's Waldo?" but with oil instead of a striped hat. Secondly, the science. These holes are also a way for China to explore the Earth's crust and gain a better understanding of seismic activity and natural disaster risks. It's like they're trying to read the Earth's diary, hoping to find out its deepest secrets. Who knows, maybe they'll discover the Earth's favorite band or its secret crush on Mars. So, there you have it. China is drilling deep holes to satisfy its thirst for oil and its curiosity about the Earth's crust. It's like they're trying to become the ultimate Earth whisperer.

The Soviets already tried this. It's impossible to go any deeper than they did, because if you get too deep the heat of the Earth's interior will melt any drill bit. I think the Sov's made it to 12 miles.

No man has ever been on the moon, and this statement is no different from explaining to millions who denied long ago that the Earth isn't flat; it's round.. Here are two key factors: 1. *Extraordinary temperature conditions* : There is no invention that allows a human to wear a suit and stand inside a roasting oven for hours. 2. *Extremely cold conditions* : Nor can you put on a protective suit and be surrounded by dry ice for hours. These are the severe and critical conditions you would face if you were actually standing on the moon. Let's debate; there is nothing shameful about discussing critical thinking. Critical thinking allows us to analyze arguments, question assumptions, and seek evidence to support or refute claims rationally. 😳
