Mixing For Beginners: Unmask Vocals

In this video Matt talks about unmasking vocals using the Izotope Neutron plugin. If you've tried different orchestration and EQ but still the vocals are buried, try unmasking. Unmasking is basically using a multi-band compressor triggered off the vocal that compresses targets problem frequencies. It's two-hour run time? It was almost three hours long.
2:24
@@MatthewCarano Sorry, my bad, although according to IMDB it is 2:28. Either way, it is closer to two and a half hours than two hours.
Drake has a high pitched ,monotone , nasal like voice. I don't hate him, but I never been into his music. He does have two songs I like, hot line bling and started from the bottom but that's about it.
Totally. I just don't love his style. He's background music .
Even as a black person, i cant waste time listening to drake. I know two old songs that i heard being played in japan before Covid… i cant even remember the titles! 🙄🙄 Thats how irrelevant he is to most of us. Plus the arrogance? I rather listen to Celine dion and cry over my exes.
Haha Celine!
When I'm working on audio material, I never forget that the eyes can't hear. Yes, you can see in spectral analysis things that you would never be able to hear. But there are also things that you can hear, and that you will not see in spectral analysis (often because they are in the time dimension). I wouldn't rely on spectral analysis to visually distinguish between similar voices. Also, the mic position can make a big difference, when recording the same person. The mike closer to the mouth will give it this breathy quality, and more lower end, and I think it's what has been done for the SJ recordings in "Her". The cutoff at 10KHz is not audible for most people, and is probably just to reduce transmission bandwidth anyway (the missing frequencies are probably present in OpenAI recordings). In short, the spectral differences that you point out can exist in recordings of the exact same person. If one cannot tell that the voices are different by LISTENING to them, using spectral analysis will not help. And BTW you are right, these are not the same person, I can hear it. I think SJ has been a little paranoid here. Either OpenAI has played her for publicity, or they have just been misguided asking her to do the voice in the first place, as they had already started doing it with someone else anyway!
I appreciate what your saying, but my point is, if they were trying to make the VO artist "sound like" ScarJo, they would EQ it the same way. So not only did they use a different artist, they also didn't try to make her sound the same. Thanks!
@@MatthewCarano Yes, I agree. That's a good point.
Drake consistently put out mediocre albums while Kendrick put out classic album after classic album lol Kendrick’s discography is better then drakes quality over quantity
Agree 100% on this. Drake is background music while you're doing other things. Lamar is art.
Hes singing fir the young girls obviously 😅😅😅
At least one thing they haven't stolen. Maybe.
I was in touch with the VO artist after I made the video. Def didn't steal ScarJo's voice. They recorded Sky months before Altman reached out to ScarJo.
That's very unfortunate for her. I trust celebrities as much as I trust openai. Not at all. It's often the average people who gets screwed by their nonsense.
I said this from day one that Scar Jo is hearing things. Because it obviously isn't her. I mean I listen to a lot of audio because I stream and make CZcams videos and I EQ all of my own stuff, so maybe that is why I can hear the difference.
I agree it sounds nothing like her. And I'm shocked ScarJo herself doesn't hear the difference. I would 100% be able to tell if something is my voice or not. Also, after I made this video, the woman who voiced Sky reached out to me on Twitter. She told me they recorded her months before Altman reached out to ScarJo. It's not even a question they're different people. Thanks for watching!
@@MatthewCarano Yeah, as a small creator, I get it. I felt like a like and a comment is warranted. But yeah, I am not surprised at all that the voice actress is a little upset. I would be, too. Scar Jo is a bit of a narcissist. She will go after anyone she feels is stepping on her "brand" or image. I hope they return the Sky voice because it is the only good one they offer.
well sayed man!!!
my favorit voice is gone :(
A lot of people have said that :(
The fact that we have to listen really closely to hear a difference means it was intentional.
That's just not true, it wasn't intentional. For one, the VO artist recorded Sky months before Altman ever asked ScarJo to provide a voice for OpenAI. Sky was first. And, for another, they sound nothing alike, nor do they "look" alike through an EQ.
just found this channel, love the vid
Why thank you
That’s her voice, I know her personally and she sound just like that….#blackwidow
No it's not.
That’s her voice, I know her personally and she sound just like that….#blackwidow
It's not her. I'm in contact with the VO artist who also did interviews in WaPo, etc. And no, it sounds nothing like her.
It’s a joke dude lol
The EQ analysis doesn’t really work considering both voices are processed.
OAI was trying to mimic ScarJo's voice, the production would be the same/similar, and show up that way on the EQ.
Sounds nothing like it
Agreed
Hope this gets reversed cause i think a lot of people, myself included preferred the Sky voice. Not just saying that for my names sake. Like I know that famous people own all the mouth sounds, but maybe this can be an exception.
A LOT of people have told me the same thing. They shouldn't have taken it down. Doesn't sound like SarJo.
I didn’t think it sounded like SJ either. They blew it by changing it and now I dislike using it. It’s a small thing but only one female voice isn’t enough. Hoping they reverse this move.
I already could tell from clips and trailers, not good.
Awesome Breakdown. This rap battle will definitely go down in history.
For sure. I hope the truth comes it whatever it is.
It doesn't sound like SJ at all.
Not at all. you'd think Johansson would know the sound of her own voice.
@@MatthewCarano I think it sounds a lot like her. It's interesting isn't it, the qualities we notice about somebody's voice and looks as well, they vary wildly. People might think another voice sounds like ScarJo because it's breathy, while I don't really pay attention to that aspect would say it sounds nothing like ScarJo. They got a sound-a-like which is similar but not the same. They got the qualities they valued from scarjo's voice like any voice casting does! They always say "I want somebody who vibes like xyz voice actor" lol... that doesn't mean sounds exactly the same as, but obviously they share qualities.
@@knifeyonline Also, how are these people listening to it, crappy laptop speakers? Clearly Sam wanted to link up the movie in peoples minds to get mindshare association, but the human voice only has so much diversity - there are likely tens of thousands of people out there that actually DO sound like XYZ celebrity, you can't assert ownership over voices like that - just look at the Elvis impersonators.
Can't link it here but there was a wapo article called "OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show" where it was all debunked. "The actress was hired to create the Sky voice months before Altman contacted Johansson, according to documents, recordings, casting directors and the actress’s agent. The agent said the actress confirmed that neither Johansson nor the movie were ever mentioned by OpenAI. OpenAI didn't tweak the actor's recordings to sound like Johansson either, because her natural voice sounded like Sky's, based on the clips of her initial voice test that The Post had listened to." "This feels personal being that it's just my natural voice and I’ve never been compared to her by the people who do know me closely."
I actually posted this video on X on May 21st before the Wapo article came out, and I'm in touch with the voice actress who performed Sky. She reached out after she saw my video. But yes! Debunked indeed. Unfortunately people are still arguing OpenAI stole the voice from Johansson, so thought I'd post here as well. Thanks for your comment!
@@MatthewCaranoAltman admitted openly he was a HUGE fan of the movie, Her. He tweeted ‘Her’ when he showcased the new voice. His hubris is his undoing. These guys literally wipe their proverbial a$$ with copyright law and IP law. They deserve everything they have coming to them. And more. The fact he sought Scarlett out after the first iteration is irrelevant, his fandom of the film, the direction of the voice talent, the emulation of the film, a WB distributed property…. The guy is sunk. I feel sorry for the voice actor too. An unwitting pawn.
@@macandbern Being a fan of "Her" and asking ScarJo to provide a voice, does not mean he stole her voice. He did not. They don't even sound alike. Don't look alike under inspection. However you feel about Altman is irrelevant when the facts don't support the theft.
@@MatthewCarano But you don’t know all the facts. The film and altmans preoccupation with it pre-dates the timeline of events involving the actress. They pulled the ‘sky’ voice as soon as the lawyers asked for details regarding how the voice came to be. In the same way the AI can create any voice, it’s almost guaranteed they they likely mixed the voice actor with reference clips from “Her”. That’s literally exactly what their technology does…. Emulate copyrighted original content in a new way…. Hey, I’m happy to just sit back and watch this one play out….but I’m betting this goes Scarjo’s way, 99.999%.
i gotta be honest the first time i listened to this i didnt had an ideia what the lirics could be. Great song Matt

some things you may be interested in: the snare is layered with an envelope/resonant filter to give it the timbre of a barking dog. the delayed voice effects are superimposed to several octaves above and below the audible range. from the 2nd verse onwards, the chord progression is occasionally 'tweaked' to switch between G / Gm7
Totally does sound like a barking dog! And you hear more of the sound after the strike instead of the strike itself. Makes sense with the vocals. Sounds like a distorted whisper in the first half of the second verse in particular. Amazing production attention to detail!

There’s no stum on the beat between 1 and 2, right? On the recording I mean
DAMMIT I knew there was a second guitar in there somewhere. I’m just learning guitar and my goal is to play this song!
Nice tutorial..thanks a lot. Some guy said you should take vocal lessons. I disagree. What happens is that you sing too loud and the guitar sounds too low. But you sing well, only it should be softer. hugs
