KITN Ep. 7: Knitting with My Hand-spun + Lots of COs, Silly Mistakes & Frogging in my Future
zhlédnutí 194Před 2 měsíci
So far, having multiple projects on my needles hasn't meant that I jump between projects any more than usual. Over the last few weeks, I still knit on one project exclusively, then another, then another without going back to any of my WIPs once I put them down. But it's still early days for both of my new COs so maybe I'll get better at juggling as I knit on. At least I have lots of fun knittin...

It’s a sweater with (bighorn) sheep on it! Knitting this sweater has been frustrating at times, but it’s also been one of the highlights of my year. I’m so pleased with how the final garment turned out and I’m already itching to knit another one - maybe in bright colours next time! I’m also pretty excited to finally be sharing this project with you here. I feel a bit more vulnerable about this ...

The train journey between Newcastle and Edinburgh is one of my favourites. The coastline is absolutely beautiful and spotting Lindisfarne Castle is always a thrill! Does a knit/crocheted garment ever remind you of where you were or who you were with when you knit/crocheted it? I’m so glad I got to start this sweater while my parents were visiting and I can’t wait to be reminded of their visit every time I see mom wearing it. Now I just need to figure out what I’m going to make for dad (he is very tall... so maybe a plötulopi hat!). I’ll be sharing a video ...

Hello and thank you, as always, for joining me! So lovely to see you’ve discovered the joy of sock knitting. I always have a sock project going next to a larger project, for the moments when I don’t have the brain space for the larger project (like a lacy top currently on needles) or to take with me when I have to leave the house. Plus, the rhythm of socks - knit, knit, knit, knit, MAGIC!, knit, knit…. - is just lovely. I’ll be interested to see how the bespoke toe holds up. I have one pair of definite foot socks - a cable running up the outside of each foot - and the rest are interchangeable. I always think that switching out over that toe pressure point would increase sock longevity, but the footed ones have been going strong for years so… who knows? Wishing you easy, happy, and safe summer travels.

    • @genevieveinthenorth
      @genevieveinthenorth Před 2 měsíci

I love your transcription of sock knitting! "knit, knit, knit, knit, MAGIC!, knit, knit" was exactly my experience! So much fun. I think I am going to be joining you as a knitter who always has a pair on the needles. Your thought about being able to swap socks around to even out wear on pressure points is definitely a good one too. Part of me really hopes the bespoke toe works well because it is just so neat, but at least either way darning isn't too difficult. Wishing you a happy summer back ☺

I think it’s frogging season. So many people are posting frogging videos, I just had to rip back to the border of a sweater in progress… it’s crazy! My sweater in progress is the Buddleia Blouse in Navy lace weight. I keep a pair of dead simple socks on needles for when I don’t have the brain energy for lacy knitting. Highly recommend! Once you know your needle and stitch count, socks are mostly brainless. I knit them two at a time, toe up, generally, on 2.25 with about 64 stitches. The stitch count varies somewhat depending on stitch pattern, but that’s about it.

    • @genevieveinthenorth

You've cheered me up, Genny, with your positive attitude on frogging, since I frogged a shawl I'd just finished as I watched this. @@genevieveinthenorth I’m a fairly new knitter. I have been knitting for about two years. I was knitting mostly accessories because I thought I had to practice before I could knit clothing. Then I realized I just needed to jump in and take a leap of faith that I could knit the beautiful designs I admire on Ravelry and Instagram and just get the pattern. Next weekend I will be at Knotopia Philadelphia and taking lessons with Sari Nordland all weekend. It wasn’t cheap. But it’s an investment in my craft that I feel so passionate about. Once I learn the skills, I will be able to expanded and explore my creativity. I also am challenged with Lupus and Sjogrens. Knitting focuses my mind on what I can do and not what I can’t do. Happy Knitting 🧶 🥰

@@stephaniewilliams8687 I love the idea of just jumping in and trying it! I think I too am prone to "I must do a and b in that order before I proceed to c"-type-thinking but actually have way more fun, and produce pieces I'm more excited about, when I ignore my self-imposed rules. I hope you have an amazing time learning from Sari Nordland -- that sounds like a dream! 🌟 Wishing you lots of low-sympton days and happy knitting 🧶🥰

Hi! It's the first time I watch your channel, and I liked the video :) Listening about your intentions, I think it would be interesting for you to check vintage patterns, as they are all bottom-up and seamed, they use smaller gauge (fingering/light fingering, although you can find some DK and bigger gauges), and the sizing would fit you (perhaps better than the modern drop shoulders)

    • @genevieveinthenorth

Hello! Thank you for the suggestion. For some reason, I hadn’t really considered vintage knitting patterns (except traditional ganseys, etc) but that is a very interesting option… and you’re right, it ticks so many of my boxes! I will have to send myself off to do some searching around ☺

I JUST bought a lovely, hand-thrown lidded casserole at a charity shop at tee a bit of “I don’t need this” / “I must have this” waffling and I had decided that it will live on my coffee table with my current WIP in it. You just popped up in my feed as well and I’m so happy that you did! Seeing the previous comments, I am also a member of team “Knitting Through” (long term illness/disability). We really ought to have a Ravelry group. 😊 I share your discomfort knitting with plant fibers and offer the gentle reminder that “summer knits” should be for the summer you actually have and that wool and silk are traditionally also tropical fibers. I’m currently knitting a Buddleia blouse with merino-silk lace weight for my northeastern US summer. I’ll catch up on your previous videos while I do that.

Thank you for sharing and saying hello 😊 I love the term "Knitting Through" and the fact that knitting/crafting more generally is sometimes done through pain/illness/disability but also gets so many of us through those experiences. I'm pretty terrible at keeping up with Ravelry groups but I think I actually first learned about the concept of "spoons" through one called Chronic Stitchers -- definitely so much to be gained from and learned through community! Your gentle reminder that wool and silk fibres have long been used in tropical climates is also very welcome. There really is no need to suffer through fibres that cause us discomfort! (also the Buddleia Blouse is goergeous. I'm not planning on knitting many summer garments generally, but that one might just have to go in my queue...)

Hiya, I knit both continental and English (flicking) styles because my wrists have never been the strongest and can start to hurt sooner than most when I'm knitting. So changing it up between projects (I stick to one knitting style for each project for consistent tension) has been super useful! Now I'm off to catch up on some of your other videos :)

A hot tip for sewing bind-offs on plotulopi and other similar unspun sweaters that I heard from a podcaster is to just buy a skein of letlopi (which is a spun fiber), and then use it for the sewing! The Icelandic company that makes these yarns makes them all in common colors just so that this can be done!

Just found you today…! I can empathize with your health issues as, if I were to do a podcast, it would probably be called “Knitting with Tremors.” (Very challenging and must take it very slowly!). Loved all of your goals. It’s obvious that you put a lot of thought into them. Relative to weaving, check out Navajo weaving. You can do it sitting in a chair and using an upright loom. Just a thought! If you’re interested in spinning long draw with spindles, check into getting yourself a “supported spindle “. I’ve watched a podcaster recently who does it that way! I personally bought myself an e-spinner a couple of years ago because it was easier on my body. It’s great! Have fun knitting whatever you want to knit! It’s your hobby, right?!!!

    • @genevieveinthenorth

Thank you for your lovely comment and for sharing about your tremors❤ That sounds really difficult, though I'm glad that you are able to make it work! I am also loving all of your recommendations. I bought my first supported spindle a few weeks ago and haven’t quite been able to make it work yet (I’ll get there eventually!) but the e-spinner is very interesting. I’m ok standing for short periods but there is definitely a limit on how long I can drop spindle for, so a sitting-down option is appealing. I’m glad to hear that you enjoy yours so much! I had never heard of Navajo weaving and will definitely fall down that rabbit hole. I love that there are so many ways to do all of these things so we can all try to find the best ways for us!

Your podcast popped up on my feed, and I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I could not agree more that knitting is a pleasurable endeavour, and that speed is not of the essence. I am quite severely disabled, having had 4 major brain operations and am mainly confined to bed, so knitting is a huge part of my life. I have been knitting since I was 5, and I will be 64 this month. It is only really in the last couple of years that I have embraced the slow nature of knitting and have become both a process and a product knitter. One of the main things I love to make is socks - I wear them all day, every day. I love texture and not lace. I also like shawls - again, with a focus on texture. I am a supporter of Doulton Border Leicester wool, which is non-super wash, from a slaughter-free flock. It is woolly, but not itchy, which is very important to me. As I was watching, I am making a pair of socks with it. As you like natural fibres, I would highly recommend it. In my entire life, I have only ever made seamed garments, and that is what feels natural to me. You have picked up a new subscriber, and I shall now go and catch up on the episodes I have missed! Thank you for the recommendation! 🐑Wishing you happy knitting and a happy birthday later this month 😊
