the french have one of the best teams of rescuers, the high mountain gendarmerie, trained at the EMHM in Chamonix, they are the elite!...they saved my life 13 years ago, I was fell into a crevasse. I have fond memories, thank you to them!

I spent a full winter working in the French Alps, and I had no car, so I often resorted to hitchhiking back and forth the different mountains. Every now I then, I would get picked up by this French rescue helicopter pilot named John. The guy drove a souped-up classic blue Subaru Impreza WRX, and drove it at insane speeds like a surgeon. Such great memories. Mad respect for these guys, they ARE clearly built differently.

Bloody amazing those guys are at it all the time in Chamonix, winter and summer so they are well practiced but no less impressive!

They should just level out the snow at the end of the runway into a gradual gradient in order to slow down planes with incompetent pilots.

This worked out this time; but it seems extremely foolish to me. If the helicopter had slid down or back a few feet, without lifting away from the face, or if the people climbing out had climbed up the hill, they would have been chopped to bits.

At what point did anything about that approach look ok to that pilot???

This pilot just doesn't fly the helicopter, he is one with the helicopter.

For anyone interested the cause was pilot error, he had only just qualified to land at Courchevel and had very few hours on the PA46. Approach was never stable. The French also found issues with the operational side of the "company". It was basically a freelance pilot in someone else's aircraft but then carrying paying passengers. That caused some "get-there-itis".

Cant do a short field landing pal? Cant turn to your left and instead froze on controls then froze the nose of the airplane on the snow bank? Chumps cant do short field landings. LOL. Bush Pilot retired..

I'm a mechanic. This doesn't happen unless you choose to do it on purpose. This was clearly on purpose, kudos to him for having the balls to commit this tire warranty and or some insurance fraud.

I put air in my tired last night, and this is something I always think about when do it. Luckily, modern air pumps around here detect psi as they fill and beep when it reaches the setting you choose. Nice and easy.

Summary from the BEA The flight was organized by a company which had a recent web platform connecting aeroplane owners, pilots and passengers. The purpose of the flight was to transport three passengers, travelling for business, departing from Toussus-Le-Noble aerodrome. During the final to Courchevel mountain airfield, the pilot extended the flaps to the second of the three detents. The plane’s parameters were not stabilized. The speed on short final was consistent with the speed suggested by the instructor during the pilot’s skill-test flight carried out the day before. After flaring, when the plane was parallel with the runway, the pilot throttled back late. This power reduction took place halfway along the runway, at around 270 m after the runway threshold when the speed was still 80 kt. The remaining distance was insufficient to safely stop the aeroplane. Despite the pilot’s inputs on the brakes to try to stop the aircraft, it overran the runway and collided with a wall of snow.
