Overpowered Com-Pac 16 under full main and Genoa on a gusty sunset sail
We went for an evening sail and brought the wrong headsail bag. It was a 15 MPH day with some periods of strong gusts to 22. We decided to go out anyway. Occasionally we needed to head up into the wind to lose power but the Com-Pac 16 is a solid little boat and tolerated being overpowered very well.

Wet and windy Florida camping trip in a Com-Pac 16

We took our Com-pac 16 cross country again for a week long cruise in the Pensacola area. This was my wife’s first experience camping on the boat. We chose to get off the water for two days to avoid some bad weather, but it was still a great trip. We saw lots of dolphins and had a memorable experience sailing.
Fiberglass boat repair using $8 PC-11 Marine epoxy putty

This Com-pac 16 has a hole drilled through the deck that needs to be filled and faired. There are also gouges on the leading edge of the keel that need to be repaired. Coosa board stern replacement on a 1965 O’Day Javelin sailboat

The Marine Plywood stern on this 1965 O’Day javelin sailboat was soft and rotten. The way the boat is made exposes plywood end grain to the weather. Coosa is more expensive than marine plywood, but it is impervious to water and rot. The Coosa board is also lighter and stronger than plywood. For a novice, the job was fairly easy. The end result was a strong waterproof repair.

Hello, I just bought a Com-Pac 16 from the madison area and was woundering if you had any tips on improving upwind perfromace-I recently took it out and noticed a lot of side slippage when pointing it higher into the wind-Thanks!

@@milesstimac6548 the little keel limits windward performance but I have found sail trim and keeping speed up helps a lot. This boat goes out on days most people are headed in. It won’t love light wind days. Slow = slip. It took some experimenting to figure out what worked and I’m still open to new ideas. Initially I could only get 3.5 to windward and now I can do 5.5 pretty reliably. Practice and you’ll probably teach me something new. First thing I would do is get hold of a foiled rudder. Helps immensely with control and performance. Spendy but worth it. I have them on both of my sailboats. I keep my rigging pretty tight with a taught forestay. When pointing the 16, keep the jib sheets inside the rigging so you can keep the jib close in to the mast. Sheets should be pulling down more toward deck than back. If your boat has the travelers move them forward all the way. The 16 has a heel sweet spot. Too much loses speed and that loses forward progress. Experiment with your positioning or passenger positioning to keep the boat heel to a minimum. Tinker with the boom position. Move it around to get the headsail feeding the main efficiently. Sail shape/rigging in this video compared to the “we towed a compac 16 across the country” Gulf of Mexico video I posted is vastly different. That was when I first started sailing the 16 and I clearly didn’t have a good grasp on what the 16 prefers in that video. I have the mark II which sails a little better than the mark I. Not sure hull you have but these comments will be applicable either way. I sail Mendota pretty regularly. Maybe we will cross paths out there!

I wondered what that job would entail. I bought a used moored 1970 J in 1984, and the owner had home fiberglassed the syern as it had gotten soft. It was a sloppy job but good enough for me for two years on a large bay...as I didn't own a motor. I wouldn't have trusted it with anything more than a troller. I trailered it and always kept it dry. I trailer parked it at a brokerage after I bought a SJ21 for two years and it got softer...since nobody bought it (hey free dry storage) I thought about rebuilding the transom but I was going to sell it for $900...so I bought a GetRot kit from the broker's chandlery for $30....drilled holes and filled the whole thing with get rot (basically thin fiberglass resin)...then coated it with matte and repainted. I felt better selling it that way...which I did about 2 months later to a lady that lived on the bayfront and wanted a pier runner. A couple years later I passed her on the bay. She was still very happy with it. Good looking job. Excellent finished product. Boat looks better without that aqua two tone they had till the mod 70s. Did the seat gap get filled with a stack of coosa board cutouts?

    • @growntogether9913
      @growntogether9913 Před 3 měsíci

I did cut several coosa inserts to support the cut out pieces and used thickened epoxy in a caulk tube to glue everything back in to place. This was not a cheap repair by the time I replaced the rub rail and painted the boat. It does get compliments at the boat launch and I don’t have to wax or fuss about the finish since going to polyurethane boat paint. If you’re ever considering doing it on a different project boat the repairs turned out great and I think it was worth the effort.

It fit perfectly with no trimming of heat shield required. I just disconnected the coil wire (left the spark plug wire connected) and temp sensor. I used anti-seize on bolts and screwed the clamp on and tightened down on the manifold bolt. Reattached everything and it worked like a charm! I highly recommend the Dorman clamp. Thank you for a very insightful and informative video. We just moved back to the countryside, and I am about to purchase a flock for the first time in about ten years. I have been considering getting the Salmon Faverolles, and your video was really helpful. I really like the Salmon Faverolles because I want chickens that are good with my grandchildren and that like human interaction, and I really like the way they look. Seeing the way they ran across the yard in your video was the cutest thing, and made me want to get them even more. But now I realize that I really need to consider how I can prevent them being picked on by the other chickens. Buying the entire flock at the same time, and spending a lot of time genteling them, and socializing the chicks together, in my presence, from the time they are one day old chicks may eliminate the problem. But animals are animals, and I grew up on a farm so I know I will still need to be vigilant in monitoring their behavior, and even then, a timid chicken may still get picked on. I really appreciate you sharing the real attributes of this breed, both good and bad, so viewers can make a really informed decision about whether the Faverolles are a good breed for them. And in my case it has raised an issue that I did not realize about the breed, that I can now prepare for. Thank you.

I recently had to go through all of the adjustments because one of the safety catches was hitting differently than the others. I am sure this was just cable stretching from normal use. 20 minutes, wrenches, and a tape measure got it working perfectly again. I did oil changes, differential checks, basic maintenance on four trucks last night. Dropped two gas tanks last month. Have done new hard brake lines which required the gas tank to be removed. It cost $30 in brake line and the afternoon. The more I use the lift the happier I am with the purchase. Personally it has paid for itself in saved labor costs.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, it’s greatly appreciated. I probably won’t use it as much as you, more to store a car on, with a few oil changes. Sounds as long as a person stay on top of maintenance and adjustments, the lift works well. Thanks again.

Would this boat be big enough for 2 adults plus 2 kids (9 and 10)? For sure too small to camp on but just for day sailing?

It’s not the biggest cockpit but it’s doable when you pitch everything inside the little cabin. We routinely take three adults. The 16 is slow, heavy, predictable. For those reasons, I think it’s ideal for kids that sit on ropes or move around with no concept of counter ballast. The boat is pretty stiff with a small rig so you can take a beat to free rigging or assess what you need to do. A child, or even two, climbing around won’t make a huge difference in heeling angle. Admittedly a tiny boat but a well mannered daysailer. I would go look at one and assess for your needs.

I would suggest looking for a Oday Mariner. it's a bit bigger @ 19 ft long. I have one and it works for me. However, for 4 people, (if you want to be comfortable) I would suggest 22-24 footers unless you REALLY like each other. But for a day sail on the cheap? I'd get a Mariner.

It depends on your size. If you’re small it can be a good boat for two adults and two kids. If you’re sailing on a lake with shifting winds the cockpit is small for 4 people even if they are small. If you’re in an area with steady wind direction it’s plenty roomy for a family of four. When I had a compac 16 we mostly sailed it two at a time and when we had four aboard we often had two in the cabin and out of the cockpit. I’m the largest person in my family at 5’7” and 150 lbs so take that into consideration when I say we ran out of room in the cockpit for active sailing. It worked great for us because it was mostly my daughter and I sailing with my wife and son joining occasionally. Another consideration is that the boat is small enough for 1O year olds to handle raising sails and handling sheets. That’s a plus. My daughter was able to sail it solo at 12 and probably could have done it younger had we started sooner.

My garage is 10’ 6” I have a 58” car and a 60” car do you think i can stack them ? How tall is the base the car sits on ? 4.8” I think it said in the manual? If I only have to add 4.8” for the lift it’s sitting on and 2” between the roof of the car and bottom of the other car and 2” between the ceiling I should have just enough

I went out and took a few measurements for you. The ramps on my lift are more like 4 3/8 inches. Based on your measurements it looks like you have a little over 3.5 inches of wiggle room. The problem I think you will run into is that the safety catches and the desired lift height will have to be carefully calculated and executed. 1. You are lifting the ramps past an adjustable safety stop on each post. Looks like the stops have 3 inches of adjustment possible. 2. At the lower end of the travel there is a stop at about 58 inches. Meaning I have several inches of adjustment to raise that stop height. 3. In order to release the safeties, you have to lift the top car high enough out of the stops so they are free. Meaning you should leave several inches of lift height. 4. You might be limited on which car goes on top and below based on how you can adjust the stops. I would call support, run all your measurements by them, and ask for an opinion. My experience calling was really positive. The person I spoke with knew the lift inside and out. Another option would be to respond to some of the other commenters here. A few have mentioned height limitations and they might be able to offer some additional thoughts.

I'd love to do that event, I'm trying for the Texas 200 this year. Maybe next year! My boat is an AMF Sunbird. Not as nice as a Compac 16 but it's what I got.

@@kevbjork1 There is a guy that posted a video series on CZcams where he circumnavigated Isle Royale with his sunfish. We have boated Lake Superior and it is beautiful but freezing cold. If he was able to plan and execute that trip you should be able to do the same with the bigger Sunbird on the Gulf. Would be an epic adventure. Be careful!

i really wish people would be specific about what kind of vehicle they have... i recently bought a clamp for a 2018 silverado with the bolt broken on the manifold and it wasn't the right clamp even though the description said it worked on 2018 chevy silverado with 5.3,

Should work on all 5.3 v8 engines. But you have to buy the correct part. There are different shapes depending on where you need to make the repair at. I bought one made for the front driver side and another one for the rear driver side. They are both different. Maybe you got the wrong one?
