Here is another one from the home archives. I was playing "Just You, Just Me" on Peter's piano. He told me he had played that song in the clubs when he was young. I asked him how long ago that was to which he replied, "50 years." I asked him to sit down and show me and I whipped out my iPhone.

I saw Peter Nero when I was 12 and was so inspired that I told my piano teacher I wanted to learn jazz. Now I'm 57 and have been playing pro for 40 years with more incredible adventures through music than I can remember. I still pull out the Peter Nero piano book to play Scratch my Bach, Mountain Greenery and the other tunes every now and then.

Let's get one thing straight- In my opinion, (and I'm an accomplished pianist) Peter Nero is just about the greatest thing that ever happened to the piano!!!! I have loved this man's playing since I was in high school and discovered him by checking out the Porgy and Bess album out of the library. I love his technique, his pedaling, his phrasing, his choice of material, his classical playing, the way he blends classical with jazz, his audience appeal! I saw him live once at the San Diego Zoo Concert series, and it was an incredible concert I never will forget. Peter was driving a light blue Cadillac with a license plate that read: PNO 40. That fact is neither here nor there, but i remember it as well.
I agree 100%. He came to my city many years ago for a concert, and I had the privilege of attending a party for him afterwards of which I had my photo taken with him, one I still have and cherish. I heard he is residing in Florida now and is in an assisted living facility. My heart is broken for sure.😢
@@babsy930 Is there any way you could help me locate that assisted living facility? I'll be in North Carolina in a month or so, and I'd be willing to drive down. I thought he was living in or near Key West at one point. Any ideas? My heart is broken for sure too. He was/is a giant of the piano. Any ideas on how we could find him?

I too play professionally, and I couldn't agree with you more!!!!! This man has been my musical god since high school, and I am now 68 years old. No other pianist has influenced me as much as Peter Nero has!! I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times along with his lovely wife, Rebecca who is also an excellent pianist with perfect pitch! They are both 2 of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Both are humble, modest, approachable, and together a class act!!
@@flintlong2937 I am so very sorry it has taken so long in getting back with you. I read a comment a couple of months ago underneath another one of Peter’s videos written by a former neighbor of his. Several years back, Peter moved from New York to The Villages in Florida. Seems as if he was invited down there to perform and he liked it so much that he had a smaller home built and moved there. The former neighbor said not too long ago, his health began to decline and he wouldn’t even leave his bed. He eventually moved to an Assisted Living facility in that area, but the neighbor didn’t know which one. The neighbor brought up the question as to what would happen to the thousands of his compositions stored in his garage. Can you only imagine the worth? His real name is Bernard Nierow. Wish I could give you more info, but that’s all I have. Please let me know what your plans will be. Incidentally, I live in SC…..what part of NC will you be in?

He has influenced my thinking. Especially about piano music. I still have about 45 of his 33 1/3 record albums. Back in 1981, when our daughter was a baby, I visited him and his daughter and his business manager in the Green room after one of his performances. I gave him one of those new stereo tape players when they first came out. I still have the thank you letter he sent me on his personal stationery. I have visited him in the Green room on several of his performances. When my daughter (that is her in the photo) was about 4 years old, 1984, I had to take her with me to a performance he was doing at UCLA. She would not let me leave the house without her. He was touring with Mel Torme and Leslie Uggams in the Great Gershwin Concert. We met in the Green room after the show. Mr. Henry Mancini, who was also one of his fans was there. He even scolded me for keeping my daughter up so late. Justin

At around mm:ss == 08:00, he puts in "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU" when you think he's thinking about what to put in next. Un-bleeping believable! I've always loved Mr. Nero's genius at cover-tune interpretation. My favorite is "Never My Love," The most outrageous is The Beatles' oo"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
