How about using a valve spring compressor? Never had a problem using one of those.

Your valve springs are bad if you can compress them by hand, I've rebuilt heads from 350's down to an old VW Bug head, and those valve springs aren't even that soft

I've changed a lot of valve seals and i always had to use some kind of compressor to remove or replace the keepers.
