Scientist on Sky News tells truth about Australia's climate ambitions
On Sky News on Saturday evening, I spoke about the climate and nature crisis, why we're still accelerating towards catastrophe, and why climate policies from major countries like Australia are still an abject failure.
We can't celebrate any political outcome as a success until we are actually shutting down fossil fuels (e.g. via the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty fossilfueltreaty.org/), properly protecting nature (e.g. via Ecocide ecocidelaw.com/) and equitably reversing global inequality to enable a just transition.

    Yes, Australia's climate policies are truly an abject failure!! Our governments, state & federal, are captured by the fossil fuel industry. Millions in political donations & flow to the two major parties from fossil fuel corporations. Also it was reported that, "Hidden donors handed more than $90m in “dark money” to Australian political parties in the financial year of the last federal election". The Albanese govt has written legislation to suit the expansion of the gas industry.."Sea Dumping Bill". And has approved multiple 'carbon bomb' gas & coal projects. All while dragging their feet on promised upgrade of our broken federal environment laws to include having to take climate impacts of fossil fuel projects into consideration before approval. The so-called environment minister, fought against a community environment group in favour of the coal industry. This headline says it all..."Tanya Plibersek doesn’t have to consider climate change when approving coal mines". The Australian govt fits Antonio Guterres definition of "dangerous radicals" being among those govts still going ahead with fossil fuel industry expansion. The Sky News reporter above repeats the fossil fuel industry lie that Australia's economy depends massively on fossil fuel exports.(And I thought Sky News UK was better than our Murdoch owned Sky News) The big winners in our fossil fuel exports are the multi-national corps carrying out the exports. Coal brings in some royalties, but most of the big coal corps pay little to zero income tax. And we are literally giving our gas away for free, while the exporters charge us more for gas than people in other countries pay for Australian gas, which has been processed to LNG & transported OS. The govt tells us there is a gas shortage and that's why we need massive new gas projects. No! What we have on the east of Australia is a gas export problem, with gas corps prioritising their exports over domestic supply. More gas than is used in all manufacturing in this country is used by the gas industry for their production processes for LNG export. Over 80% of our gas is exported, most of it across the Great Barrier Reef, which is a coal & gas superhighway. The GBR is currently suffering it's 5th mass bleaching in 8 years, with 75% of corals affected. The biggest threat to the GBR is global heating from burning fossil fuels & deforestation. Neither of which our govt is willing to take effective action on. Giant old growth forests in Tasmania are still being logged, as are NSW forests which are within the proposed Great Koala National Park. Logging there is taking place at twice the rate than before the koala NP was announced, destroying koala habitat. The govt's low ball 43% reduction in ghgs will not happen by 2030. Only by the pretense afforded by dodgy carbon credits of which their so-called Safeguard Mechanism allows an unlimited number, thus allowing fossil fuel corps to not only carry on BAU, but go ahead with massive expansion plans. Our emissions are still rising thanks, in large part, to the transport sector & the popularity of outsized SUVs & utes. Australia is a dumping ground for the biggest gas guzzler vehicles which car companies cannot sell elsewhere due to vehicle emissions standards. We have none. The govt announced they would bring in new vehicle emissions standards, but the fossil fuel car lobbied the govt for changes which means these SUVs and utes will in fact be exempt! This is just some of the Australian govt's 'achievements' on climate & biodiversity policy. PS. Fantastic to see how you refuted all of this this reporter's arguments. Including his 'people have to put food on their plates' argument against transitioning to renewable energy/ending fossil fuel burning as fast as possible, implying the supposed unaffordable cost, by noting how the Nordhaus paper has been debunked by numerous experts. Of course, the cost of global heating impacts outweighs any cost of the energy transition necessary to mitigate global heating. Australia as you said is one of the highest emitters globally per capita. We are also the 'Middle East' of renewable energy resources. We have no excuse at all for not phasing out the fossil fuel industry asap. A great book on this is "The Big Switch" by Saul Griffiths who points out that Australian households would be around $5000/yr better off by switching to all electric household appliances & BEVs. And our balance of trade/economy would be much better too as we can use the abundance renewable energy resources to create 'green' metals for export. And our current $18bn import of liquid fuel would be unnecessary. Many of our big miners such as Fortescue Metals are going electric. As the CEO of the company Forrest said recently at the national press club, "We have to get the boot of the fossil fuel industry off the neck of Australia" and just get on with the energy transition.

    Hi Matt, Great video. Just a thought on natural fertilisers. Isn't the most important thing about natural fertilisers that they can create a balance between bacteria & fungus in the soil, rather than just balancing the soil bacteria? Have you seen the work by Johnson & Su? I searched your channel to check & can't see anything. They developed the Johnson Su Bioreactor. A cheap, easy to build no-turn compost system, for making compost tea after one year of composting. The compost extract is used in conjunction with no-till farming. The compost is created using wood chips, sticks and/or leaves, plus some manure & a legume such as lucerne hay or some other legume that's readily available. They have achieved fabulous results, with testing on arid land increasing carrying capacity 10x. The method increases photosynthesis efficiency in plant growth & has been shown to be able to produce 5x the crop biomass in the first year of application, & another 5x in the second application. I was amazed to see their test plots on arid land. The argument against natural fertilsers that they take too much time (a decade is often quoted) to regenerate soil to where cropping is not diminished is proven incorrect by their work. Farmers & graziers are finding their stock to be much healthier as well as their pastures/crops increasing in biomass & soil depth in the first year of use. And this system is being used on 1000s of acres, saving farmers & the land from the high cost & environmental downsides of artificial fertilisers.

Scott and I have only just moved to this majestic place and were amazed that the Tarkine is in our backyard. We are shocked by the ongoing climate crisis and often feel helpless, as I am sure that so many others do. This video helped me to understand this region more. Thank you. I subscribed to your channel. Thank you for making me more aware of the Bob Brown foundation and the threat to our beautiful Tarkine. As I grow my channel, I hope to help my viewers become aware, as you have. Thanks, Matt! - Robin Bird.

    It's interesting seeing this video pop up five years later. It seems absurd talking about vegetarianism and veganism as being in any way capable of changing the global climate trajectory. The ice loss around Antarctica alone this year has increased the heat absorption of the planet equivalent to dumping an extra TRILLION tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere (that's approximately equal to half of all human emissions ever). It really puts into perspective the futility of individual action and even national action.

    The problem with new infrastructure is that it’s likely to be used for decades to come to recoup the costs to build it. He’s wrong about the billionaire class wealth though. It’s a big chunk for sure but it would be inadequate to do much, and in doing so the retirement funds of half of Australians and Americans would be demolished due to stock market depression.

    • @annabel5200
      @annabel5200 Pƙed 3 měsĂci

      Yes, and governments like Australia's are still spending billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry & approving massive carbon bomb projects in coal & gas. This has to stop if we want a livable climate & a living Great Barrier Reef & other ecosystems that we & other species rely on for survival. Public money should be spent towards infrastructure that will to be used into the future, to safeguard the future, such as renewable energy & industries, rather than on fossil fuel projects that should & will become stranded assets. Fossil fuel subsidies must end. People can choose to move their retirement funds to companies that don't invest in fossil fuels. And/or lobby their current fund managers to divest from fossil fuels. People have the power to demand change in this case. If the fund managers don't divest from damaging companies like fossil fuel corps, we can switch our money out to a fund that invests in better choices. These companies can & will do well into the future. If in the short term they don't do as well as the climate destructive industries, at least people will know they are being part of the solution towards keeping a livable climate & look their children & grandchildren in the eye knowing they did what they could to mitigate global heating.

The world's coastal cities were supposed to be submerged in 2016 and every decade or so before that since 1922. What utter scaremongering rubbish! Why is there no debate about this??? Why do we only hear one side??? This is NOT how science works. The truth is that these people will be shown up for what they are should they debate with scientists of the opposite view. If you boil down the essentials of what he is saying - in terms of the necessary adjustments - it is either back to hunter/gatherers or we are all doomed. It is just not a practical proposition.

    Africa and the middle east dont use birth controls Muslims have huge families in a bid to grow islam. They have used up much of their water supplies so much so that some places use more water on farming than people. And now Europe is going to go the same way because the problems are being put onto us with mass migration. China did the right thing with a 1 child per family law. They decided to try and be responsible. But the population is already too large. If people are irresponsible with population then population sustainability declines. Shame they care more now about water amd food than birth control. Funny the UK Government talks about the green agenda yet at the same time its chipping away at greenland to build millions of homes and roads because of mass migration. The earth is warming because of concrete and lack of natural cover like trees. Building more concrete jungles is not green.

    The soil is the skin of our mother. Thanks to the Godists ( those people who claim to follow the prince of peace but do the exact opposite of what he taught) most of the people on earth don't know that. They're trying to force our creators (yes even the Bible says that there are more than one) into starting the prophecies in revelations that are actually someone's experience with hallucinagenics mixed with history. They believe that when our planet begins to die "God" will allow them to kill or otherwise abuse all of the non-believers. Once the planet is gone and they're all living in the mansions their wealthy masters wouldn't even let them look into here in earth unless they were the hired help. Well if each of them has their own mansion and the streets are made of gold and they're all happy socialists, who's going to cook, clean, and perform all e those chores the poor Godists did on earth? They're going to import slaves, into heaven, for that. I'm serious. What use of mansions and streets of gold will our bodiless souls have? Have you ever asked a poor Godist that? The only real answer you'll get is their answer for everything. Don't question it. Just have faith. Sure I will. Hell no.
