Mary Helen Galluch plays her violin at one of 3 birthday parties held for her in Majkin, Namu Atoll, Marshall Islands. Unfortunately, the person holding her camera didn't know how to frame the picture so that her head is int it all the time! The song ("Jesus is a winner man...a winner man all the time; Satan is a loser man...a loser man all the time") is a favorite on this island. But some are s...

The people on Majkin Island, Namu Atoll, celebrated Mary Helen's birthday with singing and dancing. Although the video isn't great (partly because the party was after sunset and partly because the photographer was probably sitting on the ground and missed her head on part of it!), you can see her dancing with some of her students and sharing some nuts she had received from home.

This is another of the versions of "Happy Birthday" that students in Majkin, Namu Atoll, Marshall Islands like to sing. Although they adopted the phrase "happy birthday" from English, they have multiple songs for it!

Hello Nola, I love the children singing with such joy. I am writing because my son is Marshallese. I am thrilled to see him,at the age of 13, embraced his heritage. As his big 8th grade project, he is learning the ukulele so he can sing Marshallese songs, and have the Marshallese lyrics and their English translation. As you are probably aware, there are few materials for learning Marshallese songs and language, as an English speaker. Do you have suggestions for how he can get lyrics (in Marshallese and English) and sheet music for ukulele would be wonderful. We have done months of research and are not having very good luck. Many thanks to you. Please say "hello" to the children from "relatives" far away in the USA. We plan to visit in the coming few years.
