Planting cold hardy Fig Trees in ground zone 6b at Figgy Pop Farms
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 3 měsíci
18 cold hardy fig trees started from cuttings are being planted in ground at Alvey Gardens/Figgy Pops farms. I chose this spot because it was against a block wall because it holds heat and will help create a more suitable microclimate for the fig trees. I go over how I choose the trees, the location, how the holes are dug, what amendments I use. and All the varieties I planted.
Fig Tree Winter Storage failures

Learn from my failures fig tree winter storage failures. Sadly, I recently lost a bunch of fig trees due to my failure to heat my winter storage. Here I am doing scratch tests and testing the viability of the roots. A trunk can be dead while at the same time the roots can still be viable. Do this simple test to learn if roots are still healthy.

Fig Popping Steve's Fig Cuttings

We, at Alvey Gardens, traded a friend named Steven from @ECowboy here on youtube, some unknown elderberry cuttings in in exchange for some fig cuttings from his fig trees. He made a video of how he rooted those cuttings and we are doing the same here. We will be fig popping most of those cuttings but also cup rooting just to demonstate the method.

    It sounds like you’re not getting many figs before the trees go dormant. Do you know of anyone in your area further along than you who can tell you what your expected yield per tree will be? I ask because I’m in zone 7a and would like to plant a fig tree but only if the yield is worth the garden space. Thanks!

    • @alveygardens
      @alveygardens Před 2 měsíci

      You are right. They really do outgrow the pots fast. But being sips help keep them healthier even while root bound. I want them in bigger sips but at the time being. Can't afford the volume of soil or the space to store them. So this is a good option for a year or two.

    • @iamachine
      @iamachine Před 2 měsíci

      You are correct. The pails do not have to be food grade plastic. It is pointless to specify food grade buckets, then fill them with non food grade plastic. The system will operate either way.

    • @alveygardens
      @alveygardens Před 2 měsíci

      @@iamachine So the idea behind buying food grade is to ensure someone doesn't sell you plastic buckets that had a caustic chemical, oil, herbicide etc..... so take your own risks. I will continue to buy buckets I know are clean enough by buying what I know has only had safe contents that wont poison my trees.

    Fig roots will go out about 40 feet from the tree, putting all the goods in the hole will definitely keep the roots from leaving home for sure. it's better to just top dress the land around your trees, 5-10 feet away from the hole.

    • @alveygardens
      @alveygardens Před 3 měsíci

      Which I will do. But I HAVE to work the soil heavily. It isn't soil. It was all removed years ago when the plot was leveled there used to be a mobile home park here and had several inches of rock covering the entire park. . So, I work it and amend it. Then also top dress. Then cover 12" deep with leaves. and finally a heavy layer of mulch.

    I got bit by the fig bug in the early summer of 2022, when my son introduced me to the tree/bush in the backyard of where he was renting. I took a cutting in August and rooted it. I planted it in ground in June 2022. I don't know what variety it is. I also bought a Chicago Hardy and planted it in ground as well. I am EXTREMELY new to fig growing and would really like to know how to properly care for my bushes/trees. They have not grown any where near the amount that yours have. Where are you learning your information from? I can barely get answers from "Google" and I don't know anyone who knows anything about figs. Is there a resource you'd recommend?

    • @alveygardens
      @alveygardens Před 10 měsíci

      Well, I would say the one secret to the success of my figs is multi fold. 1. soil. So far I only have used promix organic. It is treated with lime and has an agent from prevents hydrophobic soil. 2. BIG POTS. At this point now. I have learned any figs in pots. the bigger the pot the better the tree will do. ANY trees I keep in pots will be in 20 gallons or more. ALL the trees I have in 5 gallon pots didnt grow nearly as well as the 10 gallon. Those in 10g didn't grow as well as those in 20 gallon etc... 3. I only use natural fertilizers. No chemicals. All chemical fertilizers kill biology in the soil. Biology of the soil is how plants feed. I use rabbit poo, compost, leaf mold, fish emulsion, and kelp. I hope this information helps you.
