Hugo is a large source of conversation on my group. My mother and my dad's best friend grew up there. I went frequently, but was always slightly wary because of the veiled suspicion of the residents. The events that happened: escaping circus animals, arson, shooting at Walmart, Ed Kaiser shooting Todd Whatley, and general malaise were concerning. There were encouraging aspects: the train depot, Aonsley Park, Rose Holl. My. Olivet Cemetery. Erie Theatre, circus Drive-In Dairy Queen and the community pool on the extreme west end, close to the cattle pens. For better or worse, my life has been influenced by experiences that I had here. .

You should venture out southwest to Altus -- Roma's Italian restaurant in Altus is quite possibly the best Italian restaurant west of the Mississippi. Run by two guys from Albania, they put their all into creating Italian food so very very good.. I realize Altus is off the beaten path for most everyone, but we really do eat well here.

Lots of small towns in oklahoma, Oakgrove i known for a decent size church that pulls from Cushing and Drumright. Kedrick is a pretty small town north or davenport ok population 800. Cushing is not tiny but it is the largest oil reserve in the world. Oklahoma has lots of history. Drumright during the oil boom was huge. .Cimarron City is population over 100 that had the kerr mcgee nuclear fuel rod plant until it was found to be poising the entire town and having dangerous manufacturing habits. look up the movie silkwood about its history. It has kurt russell, Cher and meryl street in it.

Too bad Sulphur took a direct hit from an EF4 tornado a few weeks ago; historic downtown virtually wiped out. 😢 Yes, as an Okie… Have visited many of these places throughout lifetime. So much different scenery & different locations to visit. Best & fondest memories of childhood have been spent in these locations! Plus many more not mentioned…

Back in the 60’s my 2 stepsisters (I’d never met) came to visit. They were expecting cowboys & Indians on horse back & living in lodges. 🤪

Leo’s was great!! Very very good BBQ. The owner of Ingrid’s sadly past away. Bunny’s is onion burgers off meridian and expressway. Great old fashioned grill. Nic’s is also great. Eischen’s chicken is great, and worth the drive from okc. Cattleman’s is a basic but legendary steak. The Ranch is more upscale, and excellent. OKC has a plethora of great locally owned spots of all stripes. We have excellent Asian all along NW 23rd, particularly Pho. There is a very strong, diverse Asian population. One additional spot, on Classen near 36th, is Cafe Cacao. Great and different breakfast! Ask any resident for a recommendation, I bet you get a treat. Guy hit some great spots, but lots of others!!

I live in Martha, OK, a town of about 140 people, more or less, positioned 6n and 3w of Altus, in Jackson County. The town was named (in 1890) after the wife of its first postmaster, and we still have a post office here. The school, grades 1 - 12 closed about 20 years ago, and the remaining students were sent to 4 other school districts around us. The building was sold to a local man, and still stands to this day. The First State Bank of Martha moved to Altus about 40 years ago, and became the First State Bank of Altus, until it was bought by Herring Bank of Amarillo. I purchased the building about 24 years ago, and used it as my pipe organ building factory until it caught fire about 4 years ago, and burned to the ground. We had two nice brick two-storey churches, Methodist and Baptist - for about 100 years -- but the Methodist closed and building was sold and torn down about 25 years ago, and the Baptist moved 3 miles east to highway 283 and built a new building. Although we are small, we are a neat comfortable town, with few problems, and most people get along with each other. Everyone seems to take an interest in maintaining a decent place to live -- we still manage all the needs of the populace, garbage pickup, our own water and sewer system, and very decent roads in and out of the town. Perhaps we don't fit your requirements for one of the 10 smallest towns in Oklahoma, but I would suggest you visit us and find out for yourself, that small doesn't mean little.
