1962 Oldsmobile 394 Engine and Transmission Removal for Overhaul

We're rebuilding the original 394ci (6.5l) engine on this 1962 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight. The engine had excessive oil consumption and blue smoke, but otherwise ran strong. Here, we're pulling the engine and rotohydramatic (Slim Jim) transmission as a unit. We used an engine hoist and engine stand from Harbor Freight Tools. If you're pulling a big block engine like this one, I recommend getting t...

Oil was leaking from the bell housing area, notably it was dripping from the starter bolts. A garage diagnosed the problem as a "rear main seal" leak. Since you can pull the inspection cover and see the flex plate appeared dry, I tried replacing valve cover gaskets, oil pressure sensor, and the oil pan gasket before going after the rear main seal. I learned that this generation of Chevy engines...

Here we replace the oil pan gasket on a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe 4x4 with the 5.3L engine. I mention not seeing oil leaking onto the flexplate and conclude that the rear main seal wasn't leaking. BUT, the rear main seal on this generation of Chevy engines is contained in a REAR COVER. The rear cover has its own gasket and that WAS LEAKING! I've got another video coming on that one. Replacing valve cover gaskets on a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe 4x4 with the 5.3L engine. I know I said you could torque the valve cover bolts down by hand. I did and there hasn't been a problem. But, a better solution is to buy a 1/4" drive torque wrench and torque them to spec! I found one later at Home Depot. It wasn't expensive and it was small enough to work in those confined spaces. If one had to change the rear main seal and the pan gasket, how would you go about doing that? I have a 2003 z71. I picture changing the pan gasket first, then drop the trans etc to do the rear gasket/and seal. It seems having the lack of support of the trans while doing the pan gasket could be a challenge. BTW. This would be done on jack stands, Thoughts?

    Did list last week on my 02 Suburban 1500. The front diff needed to come down about 6 inches for the pan to get out. It was terribly dirty and was glad I had a solvent tank to clean everything in. Thankfully it looks like the rear main seal was not leaking. Getting the oil pickup tube seal replaced was a bit fiddly as it didn’t want to go in. All back together and no leaks. Took about 5 hours total to do.

    Many of you commented that I should have replaced the Oil Pump Pickup Tube O-ring seals. It didn’t occur to me at the time I did the job, but I agree with you. As a matter of good practice, I recommend replacing those O-rings when doing this job. For anyone like me who overlooked this step, I can say the Tahoe is still in service with normal oil pressure. If the pressure drops, I’ll know right away what to fix! Thanks folks!

  • @operationsword9457
    @operationsword9457 Před rokem

    My gasket came with two holes (rear and front ) with extra silicone to capture two bolts as starter bolts. Another trick is to place two zip ties inside two bolt holes. I actually changed the O ring on the pickup tube and installed a full brace on the Oring clamp utilizing both holes. I'd say the major part of my experience was just cleaning and prepping the parts and fasteners to be reinstalled. Everything else was pretty easy.

    I tell ya, removing a starter with that oil pan on is almost as difficult as that rear main seal job you mentioned! Maybe it was just my lack of patience lol. Anyways thanks for the good information, helped a bunch! The truck im working on is lifted, so no fight with the axle, however the pickup tube wont let the pan squeeze out. Instead of riveting you can strip the paper off some bread ties/Twisties, and run it through two adjacent holes and put a couple twists in the wire. Then once you got it in place with 4 corners started, you can undo the ties and pull them out. Have also seen others use zip ties and clip them off after

    Do you have to take the transfer case off? I’m about to drop the trans but I do not want to take the transfer case off. I don’t have the lift I’m working out if my drive way. I have a transmisión jack on the transmission and a jack on the transfer case. I was going jack down the trans a bit then the transfer case little by little until I have enough space to work on the rear main seal. Im not planing to remove the trans all the way maybe about 7 inches .. or like I said maybe drop it together with the transfer case. What are your thoughts l

    Great video. Personally, the only thing I would have done differently while the pan was off would be to put new bearings in it, an oil pump, front timing set and change out the O-ring for the dipstick tube. There is also the oil filter adapter plate on the drivers side of the engine that needs to be replaced. Otherwise these are great vehicles and last a really long time if you take care of them.

    For those looking for torque specs. Covers are 112 inch pounds or 9.33 ft pounds. As mentioned in video most torque wrenches that register foot pounds do not go below 10. If your using the valve cover set that comes with the new rubber grommets as well as the gasket then just set your torque wrench to 10 ft pounds. You’ll be fine.
