The song is about the Baltic-Germans loosing their homeland (called Ostland or "Easternland" - because it was one of the biggest german eastern settlements) "The best of us stayed" was poorly translated and meant that the best of them had fallen in battle whilst the survivors returned back to their ancestors homelands - that also explains the bit about becominh different from their german bretheren (from the west, the south and north [of germany]) The bit about the flag or "Banner" is representing their Culture, and the part about it pointing to the east means that their desire is to one day return to their lost homelands. To a german native you can really hear their pain of loosing their homeland and their desire to return.

It is always said that GB, France, the Soviet-Union and the USA feared Germany! How can that be? Such a little country! Actually Germany had more to fear than the others. And after WWI which Germany did not start and after WWII it was robbed and subdued by the victors. Reunification was a normal right of the German people and other powers should have had no say. The 2 plus 4 negotiations for unification made sure that Germany would give up the mighty Mark and be tied up in the EU.

The Germans did not become Russians or Poles! They were either killed (3 Million) or expelled (12 Million) to the western parts of Germany by force! This was ethnic cleansing by Poland and Russia and tolerated by the 3 western powers at the end of 1944 and the beginning of 1945! By the way Germany had already lost territories after WWI. The aim was to weaken Germany as much as possible! Churchill has been quoted for saying: There are 20 Million Germans too many in Europe and Stalin did the dirty work.
