This is the old display referred workflow in darktable. Most of the time I use the scene referred workflow which is considered a better and more modern way to manage color and exposure. I use it 97% of the time and have been quiet pleased with the results. The learning curve is worth it. There may be a few cases you might use display referred. But, honestly I stopped using it awhile back. The tone equalizer is a powerful tool and I find it even more powerful and precise than curves. The white balance tool is best untouched if you are using scene referred. Once you learn the color calibration tool, that is all you need. Look up scene referred and filmic. Try the tone equalizer. Try sigmoid too. That should get you started and don't look back! Why would I want to use display referred or scene referred? If you are shooting raw files, you are creating an image specific to a camera. You have more tones and colors you can manage than in a fully processed image like a jpeg. Darktable is a great tool for raw image manipulation, but it is also good at handling those fully processed jpegs. The scene referred method is better at getting information out of the shadows and highlights in raw images. There is also less banding in images from posterization. But, jpegs may be better suited for the display referred workflow. #1 Lets face it. Curves by themselves are so much simpler. #2 getting rid of banding with dithering is a good solution for jpegs which tend to have that problem #3 there is a smaller tonal range you have to manage. You just want to get that picture out without much fuss and get it done quickly. I have used scene referred and display referred on jpegs and have had good results with both. I think scene referred is a little better at times. I am still trying to wrap my head around why anyone would not want to use the scene referred method for most of there imaging in camera raw!

hi, is there a way to create non-destructive layer like photoshop? Like when we want to adjust brightness to a layer, there is a brightness layer linked to the target layer, so we can go back to its last value if we need to adjust again in the future.

As I've recently had my older laptop OS changed to Kubuntu, I gained the GIMP program for image editing. I'd always wanted Photoshop but the price required pockets deeper than mine. Automatically recognize the object in the image and resize it so that it maintains a fixed distance (e.g., 25px) from both the top and bottom edges of the canvas. 3.
