Claude Debussy's little known war pieces (1914-1917)
A collection of Debussy's war inspired works for solo piano:
0:00 - Pour l'œuvre du « Vêtement du blessé » (1915)
It was written to help raise money for the the charity Vêtement du blessé [Clothing for the wounded]. The surviving manuscript is a copy given to Debussy's wife, Emma, who also contributed to the organization.
1:02 - « Les soirs illuminés par l'ardeur du charbon » (1917)
It was given to his coal merchant Monsieur Tronquin for having provided him coal during sparse supply in winter due to the ongoing war. This piece seems to quote some of his Préludes.
3:12 - Élegie (1915)
It was published in facsimile in the book Pages inédites sur la femme et la guerre (1916). It is my favorite of the collection.
5:40 - Berceuse héroïque (1914)
Written "to pay homage to His Majesty King Albert I of Belgium and to his soldiers". At 7;43 the Belgian anthem is heard. Debussy also later orchestrated this piece, which I prefer over this version.
Pianist : Jean-Efflam Bavouzet
The score in this video is the result of my attempt to recreate the engraving style of Ch. Douin, the engraver of the publisher Durand et Fils, responsible for the elegant scores of Ravel, Schmitt, Boulanger... and of course Debussy's later compositions. I particularly love the unique aesthetic of these scores, that is made famous by the the great compositions they contained. In addition to replicating all of the fonts (4 text fonts and a music font), I also had to figure out how recreate the other factors that contribute to the style, such as the note spacing, beams angles, line thicknesses, page formatting and slurs. It was rather time consuming, but I think it turned out rather well.
You can find it here:
drive.google.com/file/d/1zKNKvwLEpYD--vjvVtXu9iRcJ88qyD37/view?usp=sharing
if you find any errors in the score let me know and I'll eventually update the pdf
(Debussy also wrote other pieces about the war but for other instrumentations)

Wonderful? a lot of expression, and the right tempo, too! Many pianists play this piece too rapidly, and its beauty literally evaporates.

Eeerily similar to Louis Vierne's later works, but with Debussy's own more ethereal style. (Vierne is better known for his organ works. He and Debussy were friends, and Debussy hold him in great esteem.) Thanks for making the scores available, and in facsimile engraving at that!. So far I only knew the second piece.

With exception of the berceuse, these pieces where composed with a very small potential audience in mind, which allowed Debussy more freedom to write in whichever style he pleased. I'm glad you enjoyed!

I doubt that this was his last piece. What about Mephisto Waltz No. 4, S. 696? It remained unfinished because Liszt worked on the piece in 1885 and died the next year in Bayreuth.

Even in the happiest moments in Schumann you can always feel the darkest night. This is the big difference to Mendelssohn who was - compared - the lucky guy of these two great guys. As far as I know they appreciated another very much. Besides I am glad that Tatiana Nikolayeva evidently knows the poem (Joseph von Eichendorffs Liederkreis), so she knows what it is all about. Because sometimes pianists play these pieces in a pure virtuosic way and maybe don't know what the pieces are about, but it is clear that Nikolayeva knows it.

    • @M.Arsenault

To be brief, what most trios seem to play is a somewhat erroneous reading of Leslie Howard’s edition of the piece, from “Liszt Society Publications Vol.11 Complete Music for Piano Trio”, published by The Hardie Press. That edition includes the final revision of the piece (the one in this video), but for some reason, also includes the latter half of the transcription by Edward Lassen as an “alternate ending” -- which Liszt purposely omitted from the final revision. Most trios recorded this piece with the “alternate ending” either because the score was confusing or for extra length I suppose? Anyway, I would suggest it be a better idea to play the final version instead.

Chopin destroyed a lot of his unpublished and probably unfinished manuscripts during the last months before he died. I understand why he did it, but I wish he hadn't anyway. The "Souvenir de Paganini" is actually inspired by a performance of Paganini in Warsaw in 1829 that Chopin went to (he was 19 yo). Frederic was so impressed by and amazed about the miraculous violinist that he wrote those Variations out of enthusiasm.

Magnificent music. Less than magnificent recording. I guess it was Berman, in his unfortunately influential DG recording, who started the fashion of playing nearly every piece from this set too slow, especially "Angelus" and the second threnody. Kocsis fell in the trap, as did Korstick, but both still managed to pull it off better than Berman.

The recording is great, this is how Liszt‘s late compositions should be played. He was an old man barely able to playe the piano by the point he wrote these pieces. A lot of adequate griefing is conveyed through the slower tempi. This darker mood gets lost in faster recordings like the one of the otherwise great Cziffra, who especially disappoints in the two funeral marches (No.5,6). Korstick also has a wonderful recording of the Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses.

This recording and other from similar period, show that Cortot not only was a great musician but also a men of astonishing technique. A lot of people think very badly about his technique, because of his very late recordings when he was out of shape. No one can play like him, great pianist and human being!

    • @classicallpvault8251
      @classicallpvault8251 Před 6 měsíci

Not just a great technique but a great pair of balls to take a risky but musically superior approach to the most difficult passages of all of the works he played. The absolute top of his technique is the recordings of Saint-Saëns' 'Etude en forme de valse' it took 99 years for a pianist to dare a similar approach in a recording session with the same piece - Bertrand Chamayou. Cortot in his prime was technically superior to Horowitz, Cziffra, or Rudolf Serkin.

Thank you for sharing and for your explanatory notes. Indeed, the question is what being faithful to the text means. What I always find when listening to old school pianists (no matter what notes they play, and irrespective of how many wrong notes they play), is that they very convincingly are able to convey the music in terms of articulation, structure and content. Wonderful, and a true source of inspiration.
