O Gauge Live Steam: Crewchester May 2024
Open day at Crewchester in May 2024. True to Crewchester origins there were a couple of clockwork engines as well as the usual mix of live steam. There is a good mix of locos and stock as well as an unusual Gresley slip coach. Jack provided shunting support when strengthening trains etc as well as very credible run up the steep bank from Fircombe Hall.
Thanks for Alex and William for use of their clips.

We had great fun on Chris Lovell's garden railway this year. In this video you'll see several times of an engine turning on the triangle as well as many of the runs starting and ending in the station area. You will also see a couple of times when an engine had to wait for a crossing movement ahead. So satisfying to represent prototypical operation. See the pair of L1s BTW as it was filmed over ...

The weather at the start of August was very variable. As a result my annual open day was actually over two days on consecutive weekends. The first weekend was only a very small gathering but we managed to get some running in between the downpours. Fortunately the second weekend had much better weather and we had a large gathering including several locomotives which had not visited before. I'm i...

At my open day this year a local professional photographer and railway enthusiast came along and took many fantastic shots. So this time my video consists mainly of his stills in a slideshow with a few videos clips at the end. As you will see and hear, the weather was not the best. Graham made an improvement to the track layout in Crewchester. Now all the through platforms can reach to loop making for some interesting movements. John and Jack have fun with a pick up goods dropping off some wagons for Fi...

First time I've come across this fantastic layout - what a huge effort that must have been to create it, and the motive power and rolling stock. Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome, If you want more information about Crewchester layout, in my video czcams.com/video/STEJPbiT0n4/video.html Graham explains the history
Shear perfection! The raised track that is obscured by the hedge is really effective and looks like an embankment. The planting is very impressive. Well done and thank you for sharing.
@@geordieceltic2 Graham’s planting of Loniceria Nitida is an excellent way to high the supports for the raised track section
Loved the Slip Coach.
@@tonywise198 I did half think about dropping that clip😀
Are Alex's clockwork locos teleguv fitted Dave?
@@robertcomerford375 yes. Actually Alex is Bob Lovells grandson. Bob did much to popularise Telegov regulated clockwork engine back in the day.
That’s amazing - I love clockwork and have some of the big vintage Bassett Lowke pacifics plus a Walker-Fenn with the gramophone regulator- would love a telegov loco. The live steam is also divine as always. Again - I have some vintage steamers but these are so refined 👍
@@davidparry1982 advantage of high pressure internal firing. 😀

Wow 🤩
Well done! (Love the shirt)! 👏😊
always worth waiting for 👍 thank you for another great video Chris
Hey, how much water is in the boiler and tender, and how long can you run on it?
The capacity really depends on the prototype. My LNER Q6 (NETTA) boiler has a 90ml capacity but I usually start with 50ml. The axel pump will raise the water level during the run. The tender is mainly water with a meths tank holding 65ml. The run is governed by the amount of meths at about 30 mins - by which time the lubricator needs topping up again. As you see from my videos, we also top up the water in the tender on the go.
I would love to have 0 gauge live steam on my railway. I will be running my collection of Hornby live steam on the 00 gauge section of my garden railway. Thanks for subscribing to my channel.
BTW we will be running O gauge live steam at the Gauge O Guild show in Kettering next weekend.
Great show Dave. Gorgeous layout. How many of those engines are LBSC design?
Glad you liked the video. My Q6 is basically the NETTA design from LBSC but with a fire tube boiler and the cylinders closer to scale. In some of my other videos there is a BAT or two. Most of the other engines are scratch built from own design. That said, follow the words and music of LBSC and you’ll have a working live steam engine. If you do built an LBSC design, go for 29mm back to back wheels. Btw another source of inspiration is the Gauge 0 Guild ‘live steam’ book - still available from the Guild bookshop.
These are great.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed seeing these little steamers in action
Fun video.
I'd be curious to see what cars they ran with the Bowman trains. I have one of the larger Bowman trains myself but I haven't seen any cars for sale yet.
As an American I have to say I am in LOVE with these british trains. I own a Bowman I found here in the states but I'm thinking of perhaps picking up a Basset Lowke or something where you can control it's speed. The Bowman looks amazing but from what I've read it's kind of a light and let rip loco. lol
I so enjoyed this video. Here in your former colony, most of our live steam uses larger scales.
Glad you enjoyed these miniature live steamers
Excellent! 👍👍
The guard's tea jug must have gone flying across the van round the curves at that speed. Nice sounds, nice rolling stock.
Great stuff.... awesome layout... Great locos and rolling stock... 👍🙂🇳🇿✅
Thank you 👍
You are welcome
Bloody marvellous stuff.

Great videos. I'm wondering if the track maintenance is a lot of work? I know that you also have a ground level railway as this one is partially, does that add a lot of effort over a raised track?
Ground level track on a firm foundation (e.g. concrete base) and the track glued down is relatively easy to maintain. Indeed much of my track all I need to do is sweep off the leaves / grass and then run trains. I can run my petrol lawnmower wheels over the track without damaging it.
On live steamers of this scale are the outboard cylinders the ones doing the work or is there another inboard cylinder that is actually doing the work and propelling the locomotive? I'm from the US and I'm a welder by trade but I do have some machining experience and the idea of making an O scale live steam model of an American locomotive has always intrigued me.
Generally the cylinders are where they are on the prototype. FYI outside cylinder locos are generally easier to make as you have more space.
@@DrDave_63395 Thanks, that's what I was thinking but wanted to know for sure. Do you know of anyone in the O gauge Live Steam scene that has made a model of a US locomotive or does everyone that you know of stick with UK prototypes?
Loved the J27 with its train including a 'fitted head' trundling round, very realistic from memory. Thanks
John is keen to get the right head codes when he runs. Indeed he will often have some spare lamps in his pocket and change the code between light engine to coupled to the train.
Just what is that Mikado? I would think it's a P1, but the tender doesn't look like a Nor' Eastern tender and I didn't think you'd see a belpaire firebox on a Nor' Eastern either.
Its a freelance loco inspired by the LNER mikados. Its also coal fired with (for O gauge) a massive firebox. William recently acquired it and this is the first time he ran the engine in public. As you can see it was a very successful run.
Yum, that and a nice evening cuppa..... I will sleep soundly tonight :>)
Engineer Spider keeps loco ready to steam
13:57 my favourite moment 👍 how many wagons was that loco pulling? beautiful layout and great video thank you!
33 including the brake van.
@@davidwhiting1761 it was very impressive !
@@davidwhiting1761 Thanks for saving me the effort of counting🙂 Actually there were a couple of broken wagons (headstock pulled out or axel box failure) during the day. David's near level track and open curves makes these very long trains possible and a joy to watch.
@@DrDave_63395 it was indeed a joy to watch and one of many reasons I love live steam in G0 - realistic long open curves 👍 Talking about "near level" - what would be max gradient they can cope with, please? (1in 70 seems prototypical and it is recommended in G0 "Handbook of Garden Railways")
can you get Live Steam 7mm tank engines?
EBay often has single cylinder Burton Leech locomotives for sale. These are a 0-6-0 tank loco with Smithies boiler.
particularly liked some of the LNER locos and coaches. The coal trains at the start were great too with nice scale speed running.
Wonderful.
Thanks once again Dave. Where would I be without your regular videos?
You are welcome
Thank you for sharing your films. The gentlemen who build these locos' -- do they build the bodies from brass, tin or nickel silver please? Thanks and best regards. Kev.
Most use a combination of nickel silver or brass. you can use tin plate as well. Of course the boiler is of copper with PhBz for the boiler fittings.
Thanks, much appreciated. Best regards. Kev.@@DrDave_63395
at 15:20 Alex is topping up water mid run using tender hand pump - is it because loco has no axle pump, or because by-pass has been set "incorrectly" ? Thank you, as usual for another great video 👍
The loco only has a hand pump in the tender so Alex has to periodically pump up the water. The same on the J27 and L1 that John is driving. I included the shot of Alex because of comments on previous videos asking to see more of the operation of the locos not just them running .
@@DrDave_63395 thank you and yes, I agree with comments about seeing the operation as well as "just running"
Excellent! 👏😌
Thank you! 😃
What wonders these little engines are. For some reason I find them more convincingly realistic than Gauge 1. Perhaps it's because they are working harder. That Bullied engine has perfect valve timing and the blast pipe makes a perfect chuff. What an excellent live-steam experience. I also appreciate the ground-level layout and nice trackwork. Really something to see a steam passenger train whoosh by at speed. Very realistic. I also enjoyed the little 0-6-0 at the beginning, plodding about with its coal trucks. Also had perfectly timed valves. This is something I listen for and really appreciate. I have a 16mm scale live steam loco, but this video makes me wish I had done "O" scale. I love how the trains glide along.
Awesome!
I found this oddly relaxing. Interestig that they can pull a fair amount of tractive effort out of something so small,
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I particularly like the sequence of Graham’s West Country slowly completing the loop while he sits down to admire her.
Thank you for sharing, I had one of those some 55 years ago and regret selling it so much .
Will be enjoying a couple of reruns after tea tonight.
Great work! 👍👍
The only thing not totally visible on screen is the beautiful camaraderie that exists between the gauge o guild members It has always been the same since I was 2 years old till now 32 years old
The effort in hosting the day is rewarded by lasting friendships
Excellent, 👍 Cheered me up on this, horrid stormy evening. Now waiting for the uploading to finish, so that I can see it again in full HD 😉 Thank you.
I'm glad to have been able to bring some cheer to your evening. And yes its frustrating that it takes time for the HD versions to be processed.
Nice I want one too I have 50 OO gauge locomotives all are about 40 years old and older my dad bought them for me before I was born. Good job I was a boy. But I remembered that I have run downstairs and I told my mother that my sisters were play with my trains again The trains also played with the t v signal and my mother and father would know that we were playing with the trans I do have some of the Hornby live steam I am also building a new layout with u s a locomotives and Walthers building and rolling stock. Keep on the good work Robert Bolton
Thanks for your comments. TV interference was also a problem with the HO layout my father built in the attic. Unfortunately it interfered with the TV of our neighbour (their aerial was in their adjacent loft at the time) so it did not get as much use as he intended. But I happily built an N gauge fold away layout in my bedroom. O gauge live steam does not suffer from EMI 🙂
A pleasure to watch. Amazed that the G.N.R. Atlantic is coal fired. Could I ask a question please ? How do you secure the track to the concrete track bed.
Yes the GNR coal fired Atlantic is a marvel. FYI the ballast glued down by PVA or my preference SBR (undiluted) is sufficient to hold the track down to concrete base.

Hello Dave, I am a Gauge 1 member we had a member down in the Kent area who made a V2 in O Gauge Live Steam and also in Gauge 1, the gentleman who has the Loco would like to take it to a O Gauge Get together is there a track down in the South East corner we can get in touch with. Regards Terry Geeson
Terry, Interesting to hear. A dear friend (now departed) made a lovely O gauge V2 which ran very wel - would even self start (czcams.com/video/WKYlpemRH28/video.html at 1:18). Is the O Gauge V2 a three cylinder model and what valve gear is used? Most of the garden open days are now finished for the year - one more at end of the month which should not be too far to drive from most parts of Kent. Ask your friend to contact me - I'm also a G1MRA member so you should be able to find my contact details if you have not already spotted my email in my videos :-)
Hi Dave, I’m looking to get started in O gauge building, are there any companies selling plans, and even castings for this gauge. I’ve had a look, but can’t seem to find much out there. Thanks, Adrian
Start by getting the Gauge O Guild Live Steam book. Some of LBSC's designs including BAT (4-4-0 outside cylinder) and OWL (0-6-0 inside cylinder) designs are available. But make using modern GOG standard of 29mm back to back wheels (skim 0.5mm off backs of both wheels....). I'm always willing to help. There is also a 7mm live steam group on Facebook. What prototype(s) are you interested in?
BTW we will be running live steam all weekend at GuildEx (stafford) this weekend.
Hi Dave - I have purchased the Eddie Cooke book, do you have links for who does the castings at all? Many thanks M
Excellent. On castings I’ve always fabricated cylinders or cut them from a rectangular stick of cast gunmetal. Sometimes castings come up on eBay. But castings don’t save much if any time IMHO
great stuff, thanks again Dave
