Only for nerds: Definitive wiring guide for the Telefunken V672

Refering to my more in-depth demo of the Telefunken V672: czcams.com/video/DnA2mgiRCIY/video.htmlsi=XaqPPNgChehBbO1t I was asked about the wiring and the value of the input resistors. Fast forward to the end to see my version of it. It's known working! And re. the input resistors: Telefunken states 2 x 20R. While this works, you'll get a slightly fuller tone by raising the value to 2 x 150R. Th...

    Dynacord going from "average" to legendary status is one of the coolest stories in gear history. I can’t get enough of my Super 76, and I’d pay anything to keep it in perfect working order-same goes for my Twen 2. I recently featured the Super 76 on my channel and plan to do more with it.

  • @marclouis-boyard
    @marclouis-boyard Před 19 dny

    Thinking back, it's crazy that Dynacord was once considered just average. Today, they’re revered, and for good reason. My Super 76 and Twen 2 are treasured pieces, and I’d do anything to keep them running smoothly. I recently featured the Super 76 on my channel and have more planned.

    Been jamming with my Super 76 for years. Tried the popular 'broadcast' lubricated tapes but wasn't impressed. Sticking to Philips and Scotch Dynarange tapes has made all the difference. Check out my latest video where I use it with a percussive synthesizer-such a blast!

    @chrischrome9923 Před 26 dny

    Thank you for the good explanation You can also install a switch with several resistors instead of the resistors, right? What can a second output be useful for?

    • @3str
      @3str Před 26 dny

      Yes absolutely you can work with a two-deck switch to select various input resistor pairs. It's actually a pretty useful feature since the input impedance affects the tone. If you want exact gain steps I also recommend a switch for Rg - more precise than a 500k log pot. The second output is useful for parallel processing. Zero latency analog monitoring is also a nice feature: one output goes to the DAW, the other one to a monitoring mixer..

    • @3str
      @3str Před 28 dny

      Yes I had noticed that too after revisiting the recordings. Must have to do with the early ICs, they're located in the first gain stage. But keep in mind that this is quietly spoken word with dynamic mics. In actual use I haven't run into problems with the noise levels.

    How do you think it stacks up against a U87 Vintage/Ai? especially on rap & singing vocals? I heard the 89 has a low mid bump while the 87 has a mid bump. In general, is the 89 supposed to sound more modern?

    • @3str
      @3str Před 2 měsíci

      Yes indeed, the U89i sounds more modern than a U87ai, even more so compared to a vintage U87i. It has an extended frequency response. A Neumann engineer I'm acquainted actually considers the U89i technically superior. In use I'd say the U89i is bit more versatile because it's less colored. On the other hand when the inherent tone of a U87 works it can also be just the ticket. YMMV

    • @rtdrec
      @rtdrec Před 2 měsíci

      @@3str Thank you! I think it sounds so much better on Vocals then any U87 ever. Here in Switzerland we don't speak German, but rather Swiss German, which has many more "s, z, ck, sh, p, t and k" sounds. Practically in almost every word. Additionally, we emphasize these letters quite heavily when speaking. This means that most microphones don't work well with our speech unless you de-ess heavily. But the u89i has a much gentler way of recording these letters in precisely these areas of the human voice. I think that the u89i sounds much more "real" than a u87ai, Tlm 103, 102, M147, U47 Fet (these are the new ones I've had so far). It just sounds more like a real voice, the way you perceive it in real life . All the other Neumanns always had something very dull as their basic sound. I'll have to listen to the u89i VIntage version from the 80s. Do you think the vintage ones sound better than the new ones? Unfortunately, I can't find anything on the internet about whether the u89 has been changed one day since the 80s.

    Thanks for the video. Got a BX2 myself - they seem pretty rare, right? Mine has been mounted - I pressume by Danmarks Radio (national broadcast of Denmark) - in a nice wooden enclosure with a light grey metal front incl. handles. XLR in/out etc. on the back. A sticker on the fronta says MAGNAREV’, does that ring a bell? I don’t know what/who Magnarev is tbh :) Anyway, many many moons ago I got hold of one certain guy at the AKG hq who remembered the BX2 (I also have the BX20, which is not not not the same). He was very nice and told me a lot about it (did he even manage to send me schematics/diagrams?), including somethin about that the AKG crew at that time (maybe during development) had done a lot of r&d on the dampenening of the springs, at one point by hand fitting small pieces of cotton (if my memory serves me correctly). Sure! Wind up "monitor" knobs on the main channel(s). Monitor Out goes into an extra channel. Then on this channel, also wind up "monitor" - this creates the feedback loop. Consoles react quite differently to this technique. Most will start with a piercing whine, the Vermona starts with more pleasing low ticking pulses..
