Hi! Let's watch COLUMBO! (but watch this first)
A slap or a love tap 😅. It's hilarious how many TV shows and movies in the 70s displayed love taps for slapping😅 Definitely more likely to occur on film then.
Bonanza ,Star Trek, and Dragnet/Adam 12 were my favorites, too. Also Emergency (71-78 paramedic rescue show produced by Jack Webb)
Good to see you back.
Suck it Dale!
Suck it, Dale. Suck it, Dale, indeed.❤️
Haha! That ending was delicious.
Didn't know they made coffee pots with straws😊
Love how Columbo undressed that condescending detective.
Definitely talked him down in the politest way. Love him.
Colombo owned his ass😂
You didn't appreciate getting a look at McDowell's roddy?
0:01-0:10, what is this song called?
It's royalty free music.
I’ll take one of those Peter Falk portraits for my office.😄😝( just kidding ) I do love your office though with all your super cool collections 😊
Thank you! The Columbo art is amazing, it took every ounce of strength not to cover the entire office in it, lol.
Melissa...I love what you do! You are great! I can't wait for the next season. ❤
Thank you so much! Almost got the next video ready!
Still stands as one of the best episodes. I love how Leslie Nielson's character turns against her as he realizes how evil she is. He could have had all her money and the company but it wouldn't be worth it to be married to someone like her.
27:46 WTF 70s fashion and style make a huge comeback in the late 90s I have no idea. Only something as epic as 'Columbo' can get away with sets and costumes decorated like this.
11:50 This is the first episode I ever saw on a Saturday morning instead of cartoons. I guess that was the day I stopped being a kid. My parents said this crazy homeless guy that wandered into the crime scene was the greatest detective and would catch the killer. This guy looks like he couldn't catch a cold! He isn't even interviewing witnesses like the other cops, he's just asking about some newspaper in the hall? Obviously I became a die hard fan right away!
Falk Directed this episode i believe. The trued to make ut difficult abd he didn't direct another.
Prescription Murder wasn’t a pilot, it was a made for TV movie , nevertheless good job 👌
Your analysis and ranking was spot on! …as far as relative comparison with Dead Weight. Weaker overall while still being very enjoyable to watch .This episode really perked my curiosity about Ida Lupino’s past movie performances. Simply incredible the impressive backgrounds of many of his guest actors. Ida Lupino in particular was quite the leading actress in many movies. Additionally quite beautiful in her younger roles. Thank you for adding these Columbo episodes to your CZcams channel. Well done. BTW the 70’s started the end of the huge car bodies.. the first decade of increased gas prices and subsequent gas mileage efficiency concerns.
Thank you so much for watching my videos! I appreciate it. I definitely have caught some of Ida Lupino's earlier performances - I saw her on an episode of Bonanza recently and she was quite excellent in that too.
I am trying to place your accent 😂 you sound like laurie metcalf and she is from Carbondale Illinois
Several observations: 1. This was the first of Val Avery's four appearances in Columbo. He played Mr. Barnes who rented out the boats. Avery would return in "The Most Crucial Game" (Season 2), "A Friend in Deed" (Season 3) and "Identity Crisis" (Season 5). Just one more thing about Val Avery. July 14th will mark what would have been his 100th birthday. 2. If Mrs. Stewart was such a good friend to General Hollister why did he need to ask Mr. Barnes where she lived? 3. I know you found Kate Reid's portrayal of Mrs. Walters insufferably annoying. Reid played a far more sympathetic character in a 1977 Canadian TV adaptation of Isaac Asimov's "The Ugly Little Boy". The film was directed by Barry Morse who most famously played Lt. Gerard in "The Fugitive". I remember watching "The Ugly Little Boy" as a child more than 40 years ago and was deeply moved by Reid's performance. I think you will find it equally resonant.
Nice Truffaut reference in the opening scene.
Ken needs to tell Mrs La Sanka what the bad guy told Fletch: "I was already prepared to commit one murder, what makes you think I won't commit two?"
I like "Short Fuse" more than most Columbo fans. Roddy McDowall's Roger Stanford is a loveable scamp with sociopathic underpinnings. He's not as terrifying as a Jack Cassidy but is every bit as dangerous. In between William Windom's two Coulmbo appearances, he starred in a short-lived TV series on NBC called "My World...and Welcome to It" which was based on stories written by James Thurber. Although it earned 2 Emmy Awards including a Best Actor award for Windom, "My World...and Welcome to It" was canceled after one season due to poor ratings. As for "Crimes of Fashion", Roger Stanford's pants have nothing on Beth Chadwick's garish Strawberry Shortcake outfit.
Lorne Greene, it's fun to find out which older celebrities were Canadian, as a fellow Canadian near his home city I'm glad I said that. other nostalgia other than Columbo that's hilarious in terms of a mystery series (Cannon, Barnaby Jones). But for Columbo I hope we can see your reactions for Season 2 ep 1 and 2 posted at the same time. Cheers.
❤
As you know, Janis Paige passed away earlier this month at the age of 101. What you might not know is that Janis Paige and Peter Falk shared the same birthday - September 16th. As it happens, September 16th is my birthday too.
You really have your office put together nicely There's alot of cool art
Love this Melissa....your joy and enthusiasm is infectious ...you can actually "hear" you're smiling! I should do the same and send it to you...!! looking forward to your next Columbo deep dive.. Have a great weekend... Very best from Bob in Bristol uk...😊😊😊
My favourite Clint westerns are Pale Rider, High plains drifter, and if you haven't seen Unforgiven, you need to watch it, asap.. it's the best one he ever did, with Morgan freeman, Gene hackman, Richard Harris, brilliant film, but there's lots of other good ones he did, too many to mention, but Any which way but loose, Dead pool, Dirty harry, Coogan's bluff, Magnum force, all brilliant brilliant films.. Your office looks great too, i love it..
All great films! It’s so hard to narrow down my favorites. Thanks for watching!
Looks really good!
Thank you! :)
You were really amped for the music. As others have noted, the music for this episode was composed by Dave Grusin who also composed the theme of "The Name of the Game" which starred Gene Barry. I first became familiar with Grusin with the soundtrack of "The Graduate". While Simon & Garfunkel did all the singing, Grusin composed all the instrumentals. Dave Grusin turns 90 on June 26th.
I have that Columbo cookbook too.
It’s super fun!
You've got a Bonanza of possessions.
That's the truth! Still got so much more that isn't pictured here. 😆
Pernell Roberts aka Trapper John M.D.
The one and only!
Great video!! Thank you Melissa for sharing this!
Thanks for watching! :)
I think that's the tidiest, and most uncluttered working space I have ever seen.
Haha, this is a rarity for me!
Get a protective plastic LP sleeve for the Pernell Roberts record
Great idea!
Enjoyed your reaction. Two comments. First, Ray Milland would play the killer in Season 2's "Greenhouse Jungle" sporting a toupee. Second, 10% of the world's population is left-handed while only 1% is ambidextrous.
Melissa.. ..thanks for making this video!! Love your videos❤ love your interesting viewpoints ❤
For starters, I'm glad to see someone react to Columbo. From where I sit, Beth Chadwick is the most tragic figure in the Columbo canon. So maligned by her brother and mother, they cannot conceive of the possibility that Peter Hamilton might genuinely love her. If an attorney isn't a mature choice of a man then who is? Yet given how Beth's behavior regresses over the course of the show perhaps her brother and mother were right about her all along. Frankly, Columbo ought to have arrested Beth at the board meeting for her crimes against fashion. Your observation about Columbo and flowers is quite astute. With that, I look forward to your Columbo reactions for Season 2.
Your reactions are great! This particular episode is interesting. Columbo's character is hilarious sometimes. In the Wim Wenders film Wings Of Desire ..Peter Falk plays the part of Columbo. In one particular scene he is drinking coffee at an outdoor food stand. He is able to feel the presence of an angel but the guy behind the register cannot. Columbo says to the angel...."I cant see ya...but I know youre there" "You been hanging around since I got here" The guy behind the register thinks that Columbo is talking to himself.😅 At this point of the film its evident that Columbo was once an angel himself and dropped out of the sky to live the life of a human...or X communicated from God Eventually the angel he felt the presence of follows the same path and is now human. Later in the film Columbo asks him..."How much did you get for the armor?"
More vids plz.😊
There is an ease because he's directing the episode.
Support support support. When ever you're ready.
One of things I love about this episode is that delicious opening shot, and how it sets up the two writers and their relationship in the first second: we see the Rolls Royce driving down the street, driven by the murderer, and we hear the clackity-clack of the typewriter as the victim writes. So, right away we know one of these guys does all the work, and the other spends all the money. Brilliant! Spielberg just thinks in pure movie language, even when he was a young'un here.
Jackson Gillis was a great TV writer with a long career, who wrote a bunch of Columbos, including this, one of the best, and Last Salute to the Commodore, which is the very worst. So - he had range!
TIL the house from the end of this is Tim Allen's house in GALAXY QUEST. Thank you - great watch! I love this movie so much. Amazing scenes between Falk and Barry.
Melissa...your Columbo videos are great!! Really enjoy your sarcasm.
This is still one of my favorite episodes, if not my favorite. I do like his characterization here. It has the seeds of the man in all that follows. I can easily believe this is the same person, younger and more ambitious. There is a deviousness in his tactics that always remained part of his character.
I like this episode but i never understood the motive for the murder. How does murdering Dutton help Hollister avoid the impending investigation into his business contracts? Seems like he still has that problem to deal with but now also a murder suspicion on top of it. Great review.
