Enjoy this episode that is just a quick rundown of how I’m keeping my baby Brazilian Rainbow Boas. This is a “first draft” at the rack. Let me know if you’d like to know or see more of it. I wanted to give them a replication of what they would likely be experiencing in a new home, to help make that transition after adoption so much easier.

Let's Talk Maternal Incubation Of Scrub Pythons With Paul Duren

On 6/6/24 I got the chance to sit down and interview Patreon subscriber Paul Duren. If you don't know Paul, you're missing out. Aside from being a great human being, he's doing some amazing things with his recently acquired scrub pythons. Earlier this year the two locked up, and when he thought she might be gravid, Paul got to work setting up her enclosure to allow for maternal incubation. This...

    I have heard other keepers say that bioactive really only works with small critters like dart frogs. For large animals you still need to remove poo or it will stink pretty bad. And removing it from a very complex terrarium could be a challenge. My L geckos poo stunk soooo bad even though it was so small. VERY pungent.

    • @LetsTalkHerps
      @LetsTalkHerps Před 15 dny

      It’s been completely manageable for me. A lot of people in the reptile community SAY things but not a lot of people DO things. As a result a lot of small issues become conflated with disastrous issues, which isn’t really the case. Yes, a big snake’s waste will accumulate quickly and can cause an odor if the clean up crew is unable to handle it, but each species is different and I’ve seen 150 lb retics kept in large bioactive enclosures with large waste removed but many droppings just taken care of by a dynamic clean up crew. Like all things, a little research goes a long way.

    • @LetsTalkHerps
      @LetsTalkHerps Před 15 dny

      I find lizard poop to be particularly stanky.

  • @af7409
    @af7409 Před 17 dny

    I don’t understand why a partially ‘cooked’ meal would be less digestible than a raw meal? I imagine there could be other adverse effects of partially cooking a rodent; less nutrition or trace vitamins lost/denatured, but that would just make the meal less nutritious, not less digestible?

    • @LetsTalkHerps
      @LetsTalkHerps Před 17 dny

      Good thoughts. But the denatured proteins are digested differently. In some cases it actually makes the nutrition more biologically available and EASIER to digest. However there are some serious concerns. The first is bacteria. Unless you get the whole prey up to 165+ for sustained temps, the in tact digestive system is loaded with harmful bacteria that in normal amounts your snake can easily handle, but can proliferate in heat and also in the cooked prey. I couldn’t find any studies on any negative effects cooked prey has for the snake upon consuming. However, I’ve found plenty of anecdotes of keepers who let the prey get too hot and the snakes refused it, likely due to a change in smell which would be very noticeable to a very scent-sensitive animal like a rainbow boa. So I’m not sure if Dave said they can’t digest it, if he did I’m sure that was an assumption based on the fact that the snake won’t eat it. Ultimately there’s possibly no real science to prove either way because I couldn’t find any research on it. If it’s something you’re considering, speak to a vet first. Personally I don’t see the point, they certainly never get the chance for cooked prey in the wild.

      @LetsTalkHerps If nothing else, I find there is the unmistakable scent of decomposition if they are left un-eaten overnight and a little "over cooked." I have no doubt they can smell it sooner than me.

    • @LetsTalkHerps

      Sometimes! I try and stay with tough species of plants. But once the roots are down for a few months, the snakes tend to know where they are and burrow around or elsewhere. But you have to be comfortable with some plant loss as well as propagating your overgrowth too.
