What has worked for me is to clean the chain with Liquid Wrench lubricating oil aerosol can first, with a good brush such as the Grunge brush. The lubricating oil is fortified with ceramically reinforced PTFE, which does a great job of penetrating the surface area of the links and rollers, and helps dissolve old lube existing on chain. Once you are satisfied with the cleaning wipe excess grime off of chain. This should suffice, if not repeat, but shouldn't be necessary. Then I use a chain saw bar and chain lubricant, with good cling properties, and apply liberally. Let this soak in before riding, and do a final wipe of chain if necessary, and you are good to go. The viscosity of the bar oil allows the chain to stay lubricated for longer duration, depending on your actual riding conditions. Where I live, in the summer months it is very dusty, because I live on a dirt road. So I frequently clean and oil my chain more often, but not a big deal for me, as this is part of my normal maintenance anyway. Happy Cycling!

I decided to switch to gear oil after seeing this video and Fortnine's video. The other factor was that I do a lot of touring and travel light. Bought a small 3 oz plastic paint jar with a brush cap and filled it with gear oil. Put it in a ziplock bag, takes up much less room than a big can of chain lube and big can of chain cleaner, and you have a brush to apply it with on the road. Also have a mini can of WD-40 just in case it needs a good cleaning from riding in gravel. Those two things fit anywhere in the bag.

I have been riding and wrenching on bikes for about 41 years. I stopped using "chain lube" a while back and will never go back. It sets up gummy and attracts all the things you dont want on your chain. Now I put some gear oil in a disposable paper or plastic cup and I use a dauber (www.tandyleather.com/en/product/wool-daubers) to paint it on to the inside of the chain and then the front and back side plates. I like to do a section at a time. After the whole thing has been done and I have allowed the oil to creep where it needs I take a piece of rag and holding the chain wipe off all the excess. You only need the thinest film on the side plates to protect against corrosion and some oil where there is contact. I hold the rag tightly around the chain and spin the wheel. Chain is nice and clean and you can see a light glisten on the o rings. Done this way there is almost no fling off. Oil is only where it need to be and my chain stays clean.
