Unrestored Yamaha AS2J 1971

We bought this motorcycle in France a short while ago, when it arrived it turned out to be in better condition than we expected. Just to try it out we decided to give it a test ride before deciding what to do with it. We're lucky we did: it runs very well. This is our latest Yamaha restoration. It's an AS1C from 1968. This model was never officially sold in Sweden, we got the frame and engine blocks from the US. This is our newest AS3's first start! Before we started it we spent a lot of time getting everything set up, checking all the mechanical parts and the electrical system. This start was done using an external battery and temporary fuel tank to keep everything accessible while we worked on it. This is the best running of all our restorations.     Yamaha sold that great little bike for one year in North America [1972] and called it the LS 100 . My first street bike , the first of many RD & RZ two strokers.

    The guy must weigh 180 Pounds. The Twin Jet was 8 horse power. No wonder it stalled. My bike was a 66 twin jet 100. I weighed 130 pounds soaking wet. They were fun.

    La moto de mes 16 ans en 1973. La même couleur. Cette moto m'a amené 50 ans plus tard à toujours pratiquer la moto. Actuellement, une Kawasaki Z 1300 de 1983 et une BMW 1200 GS de 2017. Elle a été la révélation !!! Très belle restoration ! Bravo

    I bought a ‘68 Suzuki T200(still have it) from my cousin in late 1971, a couple years later a friend bought one of these Yamaha 180(1968) bikes from a school mate. It was red also and was in showroom condition which was amazing because most motorcycles in our farming community were not preserved very well. They were” rode hard and put away wet”.

    My cousin had a YAS1 but it had flatter narrower handlebars. A great sounding bike, nippy too. Back in the 70's, a young apprentice where I started work, bought one of these second-hand and it had 60,000 original miles on the clock. I couldn't believe it at the time, I was shocked, but it ran great. Fabulous bikes.

    I bought mine in 1981 and took my drivers license on it at the age of sixteen. I had it until two years ago when i sold to Norway. Me and two friends went on holliday to Gotland the same year i bought the bike, it was raining most of that week. Later in life i owned two different Harley Davidson and travelled North England and Scotland. So my first miserable experience didn´t deter me from riding bikes.

    My first bike was a 1965 AS1 .. aka Yamaha 'Twin Jet 100'. I was 16 and only weighed 130 pounds. This bike was unique in that it was only 100 cc's, yet 'two' cylinders, and 'two' carburetors. Not much on the highway, but a little bat out of h-ll in the city. Basically a little jewel with everything the big two cylinder, two stroke, two carb bikes had .. but in a smaller package. Nothing in the 100 cc class could catch it. Loved that little bike!

    That’s a beautiful bike, a superb job and a very professional finish. I’m currently restoring an AS3 and I’ve a question about the spoke nuts. Are they nickel/chrome plated steel/brass or zinc plated steel with a gold phosphate tint.

    This machine brings back so many good memories, I had one of these machines in the early 70's, It always ran well and was surprisingly quick compared to slightly more modern machinery, the noise from those exhausts is awesome.

    Always loved the Yamaha twins , great restoration, just bought one unrestored picking it up.next week . We used to buy these very cheap and turn them into field bikes 40yrs ago !! The second bike I ever rode on sitting on the tank holding the handle bars my brothers bike , the first was the 100 twin . Thanks for sharing.

    I owned a 6Volt, British version of this bike in 1968. Wonderfully nippy when working but it would soon go off on one pot. I was always replacing points and it didn't very much like the rain. I visited the 1968 Dragon Rally in North Wales. Those who attended will recall, how it rained so much the Welsh Police closed the Llanberis Pass to all traffic. You definitely needed a T.D.C Dial Gauge to set the twin points; also a continuity meter. The fixed timing was critical. I later found out it went out quickly because the fibre heel opening the points wore down very quickly. Today's electronics would most likely sort that. I sold it to a guy who hated bikes at first until the club took him for a run and he was hooked. he part exchanged it for a CB350 Honda S.O.H.C. I believe I still have the workshop manual on my shelf.
