The use of "American Lion" in this video may cause a bit of confusion as that name is given to the, now extinct, Panthera atrox. Just sayin'.

jrviade85, Lack of food. When the food source (deer, elk , wolves, coyote, etc.) dwindles, the cougar population will soon follow. And when the cougar population dwindles, the deer, et al. will thrive. When more food animals thrive, the cougar population will follow. It is a time honored cycle that has worked almost perfectly for thousands and thousands of years. And if mankind could leave it alone (or at least minimize the interference), it will continue to work in the future.

I know laws vary from state to state, But in California it is illegal to harm a mountain lion if it attacks or kills your pet. I don't have children so my pets are my Children. I have a responsibility to keep them safe and it's horrifying that I can't exercise that right to protect them. Other than I only let them out a few hours a day. From noon till 3 in the afternoon Supervised.. And then they're indoors from that point on, but still If a mountain lion jumps my fence in the afternoon I will have to watch it eat my pets alive. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. And i'm also sure this comment of mine will get all kinds of hate from mountain lion sympathizers that believe mountain lions shold be aloud to eat our pets.I just happen to love all animals ,pets and wild ones.

I find the loss of P-22 very, very sad. I have been a member of the Mountain Lion Foundation for at least 15 yrs. I grew up in Hidden Valley CA and saw bobcats and the very rare mountain lion during the 50+ yrs., I lived there. Few people appreciate the wildlife that used to be even more abundant in the Conejo Valley than it is now. He was an educational ambassador for his kind and was so at his own risk! That risk finally did him in!
