ALL IN on geeking out about music and vinyl with endless passion and enthusiasm. Hey fellow music nerds, it's Andy Fenstermaker from the FensePost Vinyl Channel. This space was created out of my passion for discovering music, sharing that discovery with others, and pairing it all with my love of collecting and listening to vinyl records. While vinyl is a key theme, there's plenty here for the non-collector as well.
A core tenet behind FensePost is sharing knowledge and passion around music and vinyl. It's always been about sharing and community, and I hope you'll join me on this journey!
Currently, you can expect new videos every Sunday and (usually) every Thursday.
FensePost originally launched as a music blog on June 6, 2006 out of a small house on the hill in Pullman, WA. It returned with a vengeance in 2021, centered around vinyl collecting, and expanded in 2022 with this CZcams Channel.

The Smashing Pumpkins and the 1979 Ultimatum | Album Story

The best hit songs often have fascinating stories. This one is about "1979," The Smashing Pumpkins hit song that was almost dropped from Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Mellon Collie was the band's rock opera, a massive double album with over two dozen tracks. Dig into a little of the history of the LP and more specifically, the album story behind the song "1979" which would become the ...

Released the same day in 1967 as The Beatles’ infamous Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Baroques’ lone release is rumored to have outsold the much more wildly popular release in the local Wisconsin market. This is the story of a band that should have garnered more clout, and the struggles they had along the way during their short-lived tenure as a band. It’s the story of a song that w...

The Smile “Wall Of Eyes” ALBUM REVIEW
Thank you so much for this video it’s really interesting
Lame. “Love something loads and want to collect as much of it as possible? Stop!!!” Low forehead advises. Also, try looking at the lens.
Calm down.
Are you still following your buy one get rid of one rule?
Trying to! I have a “purge bin” that I need to finish dropping from Discogs and take to the record store…
Hard to beat this for AOTY. Best album I’ve heard in years. Great review.
Thanks! And I totally agree. Kind of obsessed with it at the moment…
Hey Andy, loving this album. Early favorites are Reflected, Soul-net, Everyone Out and the one that drew me in to this album and band, Brown Paper Bag. But really, the whole album is great, not a bad song. Great review! -Mike
I totally agree! Seriously, it’s probably my favorite album of the year so far…
Great review...love this album!!! Makes sense that Zachary played drums and guitar in Beach Fossils from 2010-2012.
I missed that part - but totally makes sense! Also makes sense why early DIIV albums are on Captured Tracks.
Next, hear my thoughts on Everything Is Alive by shoegaze band Slowdive from 2023: czcams.com/video/H2U0nfLu3yo/video.html
Should probably mention the fact that, even after all this compromise, expenditure and self torture, you still don't get superior sound quality to a CD.
I bet you don’t have any dubstep records. Haha!
Stop devaluing LP, trying to reduce the market pricing 😂
So cool, I need to make it to Nashville. My uncle lives there, little bit of a drive for me but I'm in!
Tonight tonigh, zero, Bwbw, To Forgive, Jellybelly, Muzzle, Here is No Why, 1979, Love, all badass singles.
Analogue playback devices do not deliver sonic nuance. Source: me. After listening to vinyl records for 50 years and being a collector for 45, I'm allowed to say this. You can get used to vinyl, you can find it comforting, tactile, pleasing, fun to read the cover, sleeve notes, but don't talk about nuance. A properly mastered CD will deliver all the frequency response and dynamic range of the original master recording. Any vinyl playback will have surface noise, rumble, and even feedback if you turn it up too much. It doesn't matter how clean or pristine it is. And that gets in the way. But I love my LP's. I love cleaning them on my Spin Clean and assessing their condition. Compact cassettes delivered convenience and custom programming. Then iPods came along and it was glorious. Ten thousand songs in your pocket! Now Spotify delivers everything. Everything that is except the audiophile experience on proper home audio systems. For that, I go back to CD's when I need respite.
Can you tell me where you shelves are from? I'm looking for something simple like that, which fits 12x12 vinyls. TIA
I got them at IKEA. Look up “Kallax” - they are the PERFECT shelf for vinyl so long as you build them correctly.
@@AndyFenstermaker Thank you so much!
Love the cat dude. Siamese I think, trying to lick your tats off. 😅
That’s Waffles! And soon here he’ll be joined by a little sister, Millie. He is indeed Siamese, but he’s also a Devon Rex, hence the large pointy ears and big eyes. I need to feature him in more videos for sure… ☺️
........Sorry about the long rant, but basically I was Having a go at The Decemberists! Who despite having a large fan base in the UK, still won’t give us that many UK issue of their records, so most are imports and badly made!!!!
Sorry, Spelt “seriously” wrong! Fucking Iphones!!!!
At last! Someone who doesn’t have their head up their arse regarding this stuff! Just one point you never mentioned though? The fact that record companies (particularly major ones!) don’t fucking care about quality control when throwing these things into the shops! Split the shrink and the printed inner sleeve is already spilt at the base of the sleeve and pull the record out and it’s badly warped and pressed off centre (which always happens with American imports given here to the UK! Is this some sort of revenge thing you have on us here??) Seriosly it’s not funny when your spending £40 quid plus on an album that they won’t give a domestic release to here in England, just to find it warped to fuck and the sleeve badly split!!!!

Since I've got into the hobby of vinyl collecting. Traveling to different states and hitting up different places like this is something I want to do. My first spot would be Colemine records in Loveland Ohio. They have their record store on the main level, and the recording studio on the second floor, plus the owner of the label and the store is always there. Terry Cole seems like a cool dude, and even though the label is a heavily soul based label, Terry has broadened my horizon for music other then funk, and soul. Good video bud 👍.
Love it! I fly to Dayton a few times a year for work, and would love to explore some shops there. I've purchased from Omega on Discogs before and would love to visit the physical location at some point. Those trips tend to be whirlwinds though, so it can be hard to get away. Glad you enjoyed the vid! I'd definitely like to do more like this.
@@AndyFenstermaker I've bought a Colemine White Label Promo of the Monophonics newest album Sage Motel from Omega. Colemine still presses and prints White label promos and sends them out to promote all their albums. Omega would be a fun one too
Are you going to review that DIIV album behind you? I love it!
Just wrote and recorded one this morning! 🥳
Hey there I like your idea of joining community. I have problem with not getting certain records like smashing pumpkins or some other indie records. Just get frustrated with the process then also space is a concern. Just can be frustrating not to impulse buy or know for sure what you really like
Thanks for chiming in. Absolutely -- I feel like I've been at the cusp of my storage limitations for ages now, and would ultimately like to get back to a place where it's one in, one out. Sadly, it's easier said than done!
I agree with most of what this guy is saying we live in a world where it cost over 1000 dollars to rent a 1 bedroom apartment or even a bachelor storage space is just as expensive as the collection. Why collect when you can buy a ton of external hardrives and fill them up with MP3 and WAV files that sound just as good as a record or cd and take up a hell of alot less space.
Sounds like you had an enjoyable trip. I personally like to see the places people go when on a trip like this and the fact that it had a music and vinyl related focus makes it even better. Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Thanks man! It was an amazing trip! Couldn’t have gone better if you ask me! ☺️
how uu doing?!how amazing edition! Fensepost~
Very nice, love a cool concert road trip. Looks like you have had a lot more luck at the record stores than i have been having. I am really into that new DIIV album I saw on your shelf. I think I am going to have to go see them. Cheers Andy!
Oh man, that DIIV album is phenomenal! It’s high up on my list of best albums of 2024 so far…
@@AndyFenstermaker same here, really liking their back catalog too.
Next, check out the FIRST thing I always do when I go to a record store (and, if you don't, why you should do it too): czcams.com/video/VpphTMdfStc/video.html
as a collector I dont understand your negativity. , this is a hobby. and not to be your only source in music , I have digital ( like the rest of this planet .) but I enjoy 70s and 80 music in a turn table . it was the sound of the time and I prefer it that way. if the album is too expensive I dont buy it I done need it simple. I enjoy the ones I have and I dont go into it as you do , that is a bit of a mental illness you may have to get help with. excessive behavior . looking for the albums is fun and every city has a record shop to brows through. . again it is a hobby not an obsession. your taking your obsessive behavior out to CZcams when your should be getting therapy. CZcams is not therapy or a way to get out your frustration.
Couldn't wait for the point of the thumbnail
I am watching the cat the whole time 😹😹😹🍽
Waffles appreciates the attention 😆 definitely need to include him in future vids… along with his soon to be sister Millie!
The hell you care with vinyl enthusiasts? You don’t need to dictate them with what they like to do most.
Great video!
@DynamicRange made a great video on the same topic
"Rumored" to have outsold the Beatles?...Um, who started that rumor?
Some guy in Milwaukee
His name was Mike.
That item was pulled from the summary of a 2014 interview with late drummer Dean Nimmer on Radio Milwaukee and relates specifically to the year 1967 (when both were released) and the local Milwaukee market.
Collecting vinyl is my #1 love, and I have been doing this for many years. When we moved to the USA, 70% of what we brought from the UK was my vinyl collection, and I don't regret it one bit. I agree that nowadays, collecting vinyl is a different beast when compared to the 'good old days,' but you can't beat it for appreciation, and sounds amazing when mixed well.

Speaking of Butch Vig, check out this band Garbage. I suggest you to listen to their first 2 albums. They're frankly masterpieces of alternative rock/electronic rock.
Definitely familiar with Garbage, though I haven't listened to them in quite a bit. Seems like I need to change that!
Great review. Ladytron is such a great band. They never released a bad or mediocre album so far. I suggest you to also try (at very least) their debut album 604 (the most similar to L&M) and their third album Witching Hour. WH is quite different than Light & Magic and features a more hard hitting shoegaze/dreampop sound. Highly recommended.
OK, I'm really intrigued by Witching Hour as I'm a huge shoegaze and dream pop fan. Haven't listened to that one yet... thanks for the recommendation!
Here in England I got a copy of this on RSD, only to find it was severely dish-warped... Ordered another from a different store over a hundred miles away, only to find it was severely dish-warped... Ordered a third and... Well, you get the idea. Pretty sure Sire would know about this, and the distributors --- and it's disgraceful that they don't care. But as long as they get our cash. :0/
You can ship a letter of something like a birthday card inside the package via Media Mail. It's called a first class insert and it adds the current stamp value (right now, .68) to the total cost of the package. Also, if your window clerk is a music junkie and collector like I am, be prepared to talk about music. It's always nice to find someone with the same interests.
Ok… this is news to me, and great info!
New arrivals is a MUST! Also, just realized you're in DFW too! Nice!
That I am! What's your favorite local shop?
@@AndyFenstermaker Forever young is pretty cool, but their prices are a bit crazy on things. They definitely know what they have. Can find some rarities but expect to pay market (or more) for them. Josey is kind of the tried and true in the Dallas metro at least. Good records by white rock lake is pretty decent for new arrivals - especially if you're into a lot of indie rock since they tend to lean toward that. I generally have a tough time finding stuff I want in any stores in TX but every now and then a gem pops up! Also - supposedly next year at Southwest Audio Fest year 2 they are going to have more record dealers. They had 4-5 this year with some pretty decent stock, so will see how that develops. There will also be a record show on July 27 at the Grapevine convention center (ticketed). A little bit of a drive from Plano where I am, but I definitely don't mind. They have them there 3x a year if you've never been.
