Technique Tips: Efficiency · Gestures · Momentum
My first piano technique tutorial in a while! In this video I cover some basic principles, then build on those ideas to show how I would tackle a passage from Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu. I cover topics including: efficiency, choreography, hand position, playing gesturally, harnessing momentum, and fingering choices.

Feux Follets Progression: Week 1 - Week 72.5
zhlédnutí 884Před rokem
Here's a little progress video I stitched together from 73 separate recordings of Feux Follets I've made over the past 17 months. A few notes on the project/process: (1) It took me 6 days to learn and memorize the notes, and another 502 days to get a recording I liked well enough to post. Contrary to popular misconception, memorizing notes to Romantic-era etudes is rarely the hard part. (2) Eve...

After 72.5 weeks and 1000 practice hours, here is my recording of Feux Follets. I won't go so far as to say that this is the hardest piano piece ever written, but it's certainly the one that has challenged me most. With this project, I wanted something that would push me to become a better pianist, and force me to rethink all my preconceptions about technique. I picked Feux Follets because (1) ...

Hi folks, sorry to go so long without uploading anything. I've been busy with non-piano things, and also working on a large-ish piano project that I hope to finish up in a couple months. So, hopefully I'll have some new videos to post before too long. Meanwhile, here is another original composition that I wrote over the last few weeks.

A short, simple piano piece that I wrote this week. I've been feeling creatively blocked for the last eight months, so it feels good to make something again. Hopefully I can ride this momentum and compose more soon, but creativity can be awfully elusive, so no promises.

How to Practice Systematically (Winter Wind Practice Breakdown)

In this video, I break down a systematic practice session I did on Chopin's Winter Wind, explaining my goals and how I'm choosing my practice methods, and summarizing everything I did in a ~2.5 hour practice session. All playing samples are recorded by me, using a Yamaha P-515 with the onboard CFX Grand sound samples.

    This comment is going to seem like a Simply Piano add 😂 but for your tutorial. But As a CZcams taught beginner (not intermediate at all but able to play some intermediate pieces ) I never even dared to look up tutorials for La campanella. But I am glad I listened to my intrusive thoughts and did anyway 😂 your tutorial feels like a cheatcode. I am already flying over that keyboard and hitting those notes without any tension or issue in 2 days thanks to your video. By the way.. I am not aspiring to become a professional pianist. I want to play this piece because I love it. Complete mastery isn’t my goal. My audience is me, my friends and family (who are already extremely impressed when I play River flows in You) Thank you so much 🙏🏻

    Playing this study on that keyboard (especially the double notes) may be a little advantageous because the keys are much lighter, however when it comes to not missing jumps it can be a drawback since this type of keyboard is much more sensitive to the friction of incorrect notes than an acoustic piano. Getting used to playing a piece of this difficulty on a keyboard like this has a lot of merit, added to how well you play it!

    • @NolanMillerPiano
      @NolanMillerPiano Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks! I actually picked this particular keyboard because the action is fairly heavy. I find that it doesn’t feel too different from playing on an acoustic piano.

    Regarding @5:50, the tricky F#-E#-D## turn, I was thinking of doing 4-3-2-4-(1). Using 4 instead of 3 makes it easier for me to reach down with my thumb. I'm just starting this piece so not 100% sure about that, yet... (maybe I should add that I use 2-4 a lot more than most others, apparently - based on editors' fingering. I also prefer to trill on 2-4). BTW, so happy to find this tutorial, I can see right away that you are an excellent pianist and "teacher". Subscribed.

    In my view, Rachmaninoff's prelude in E flat minor and Scriabin's etude in D flat Op. 8 are even harder than this piece. Never have I seen any pianist tackling those pieces live.

    Hey, not sure if you'll see this, but what's the best way to practice voicing in the chords at then black key measures, and at the end andantino?

    • @NolanMillerPiano
      @NolanMillerPiano Před rokem

      For voicing to the top note, I often find it helps to slightly rotate my forearm towards the pinky end of the hand, and then keep whichever finger has the melody note fairly firm. A voicing exercise I sometimes like to do is to play the whole chord I'm trying to voice, but then immediately release all the notes I want to make quieter, while continuing to hold the note I want to make louder. This helps me separate the layers and find the hand shape and movement that will get me the sound I want. Hope this helps.

      I think I mostly changed pedal every 8th note beat, unless the harmony doesn't change for a few beats, in which case I might hold it out the whole time.
