Registrace 20. 06. 2023
I'm a composer, I write musical theatre; specifically, horror, with female protagonists, and unhappy endings. This channel will chronicle the journey of the composition of a brand new musical, from conception to production.
We'll cover everything to do with the creation of a new musical; research with interviews and site visits, the structure of writing with outlines and the like, the process of writing lyrics and music, proctoring auditions, running rehearsals, all the way up until the performance of the finished work.
I plan to make this project into a resource for budding composers, a fun introspection into the creation of theatre for patrons of the arts, and an insightfully meta journey for fans of horror. The hope is that the cross section of musical theatre fans and horror enjoyers is wide enough that we can together build a community!

Why Reprises are ESSENTIAL in Musical Theatre
Using examples from Hamilton, Merrily We Roll Along, Wicked, and Phantom of the Opera, this video discusses four ideas regarding the importance of reprises when writing musical theatre; and how I'm personally applying them to the new musical I'm writing about Lavinia Fisher.

How to Write Theatre Like Kurt Vonnegut

Vonnegut is one of those authors who you study in school and don't appreciate until you're far older, then something happens, and you go, OH. NOW I GET IT. His 8 rules of writing have always stuck in my mind, especially as they pertain to the composition of theatre, particularly musicals. I hope y'all see why I find a certain fascination in these guidelines, and maybe learn something too! PATRE...
How Framing Devices Shape Your Perspective in Musical Theatre

Writing musical theatre is incredibly fun, and we have to start somewhere! Just like with a painting, or an essay, we're going to start with the general shape, goal, outline, and build up from there. Framing devices are a great tool that you'll find in more shows than not, and for good reason: literary techniques so tried and true are a fantastic means to shape the audience's perception of a st...
White Writer, Black History: Responsibility and Authenticity in Storytelling
zhlédnutí 27Před měsícem
The controversy of white writers writing black stories is something I felt I need to address, head on, in anticipation of audiences' concerns. Writing a musical about Lavinia Fisher has turned from a fun romp about a female serial killer, into a tormented romantic tragedy, one that comes with some unique challenges. I'm open to criticism, in fact I welcome it- I want to hear your thoughts, so I...
The Mysterious Last Words of a Condemned Man

History is fascinating, and often a mystery. The last will and testament of John Fisher (husband of Lavinia Fisher), read aloud by Reverend Furman, dictated that the contents of a mysterious trunk were to be given to a caretaker, until the person for whom it was meant could claim it. So, it's time to ask a very important question, one of the biggest mysteries in Charleston: What's in the box? I...
The Life and Death of Lavinia Fisher

No longer the 'first female serial killer in America', let's call Lavinia what she was- a freed slave who found love, ran a successful business, and ended up hanged for it, her reputation posthumously tarnished. In this video, I give my synopsis of her story, as briefly as I can. Suffice it to say, she wasn't a murderer, she was a martyr. Now, I'm not claiming to be an expert- I'm not an expert...

I was lucky enough to run a panel at AtomaCon, a convention that celebrates all types of media in Charleston, where I played several songs from my first show, Fantasmagoriana, which will premiere this Halloween (tickets available below!) as well as a sketch from my new musical about Lavinia Fisher. The weekend was extremely fun, as I had a booth and got to chat about my work with a number of fa...
Exposing the Truth of the 'First Female Serial Killer in America'

This video was inevitable, discussing the truth versus the myths of Lavinia Fisher, but more specifically, tracing the origins of the stories. It's something that fascinated me, the evolution of a story, and I may well end up doing another video that's a straight up timeline of the story and its many iterations, but that might be a little too nerdy for y'all. Let me know down in the comments if...

An excellent video with great arguments and sound reasoning. Very good, and best of luck with your channel
Thank you so much- I'm hoping my upcoming work will demonstrate a follow through on this. :)
Really enjoyed this presentation-- so sorry about the background noise and disruptions!
Tbh it didn't bother me too much- especially since Grady got up to tell them off! I'm always just happy to share my work, there will always be disrespectful people, I just have to keep moving forward regardless. ❤
I can't you actually got to touch Lavania, that is so amazing
I'm very honored that Carlyn so graciously let me into her home- it truly was an extraordinary day, and put into perspective that Lavinia was a real person, just as human as you or me!
ahh i’m here from tumblr (specifically that maia post) hi :)
Hey, glad to have you here! 🥰
I am sorry, but Lavinia Fisher's guilt as a serial killer has been in doubt since ages, and her murder spree is described as an urband legend. She _was_ a criminal (highway robbery, together with her husband), but never convicted for murder.
I'm not sure why you're presenting this as though it's an argument- if you watch the video, the guy I'm interviewing (Bruce is AWESOME) is THE GUY who definitively showed in his book that she wasn't just innocent of murder (in fact never even accused), but also most likely innocent of the highway robbery of which she was factually accused! I have another video lined up that will fully cover all aspects of the myth, and trace their origins- I have a feeling you'll like that one, be sure to subscribe so you don't miss when it's posted! ❤️
Myth buster 😎 On a more serious note, I'm appalled that the U.S. still administers executions.
The doors got all the attention! :-) I hope they will be cool with letting you perform at the transformed space. Have you heard back from them yet?
I have- but that update will come in a future video! 😉
Really cool architecture! I hope they welcome you. 🤞
Fingers crossed! 🤞
Rad! I'm definitely onboard for more music as well as the fascinating journey about making your new musical!
Even though I'm still in the research phase of this process, I have several ideas I'm tossing around for songs, so they'll be coming soon enough!
Nice
Thanks! I'm very excited to see the sketches. :)
Looking forward to seeing the reconstruction!

Excellent documentation of this story. 🤘 Props to both you and Carolyn.
Thank you! I'm hard at work compiling everything together into a cohesive narrative.

Fascinating, what an excellent musical this will make.
Thanks! I do have to say though, there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye. You should check out my video on 'Lavinia and Laura'- where a ghost tour guide goes into more detail on the story!
@@cashcomposer Then I shall.
I tell a version of the Lavinia story on my ghost tour as well!!! Love the story 👻
I'd love to hear it sometime! :)
My favorite people. <3 Also Laura, amazing job! You definitely know your stuff and did great storytelling
Thank you! Laura is indeed a fantastic performer, I'm very happy to have had her on the channel.
Love this so much! 😍
Thank you! I'll be sure to pass the word along to Laura 😁
I absolutely love this series and am so exited to follow along!
Thank you so much! I'm glad to have you along for the journey. The next video will be up in under a week- it's a fun one, I hope you'll enjoy it!
My god, I'm hyped for this series! After listening to Fantasmagoriana a zillion times, I decided to write a song based on a scene in my current novel. I don't know that it would benefit from being turned into a musical, but it was a really fun process! Good luck with your research and writing!!
That's amazing, I'm so happy to hear that you've been inspired! If you ever post the song, shoot me a link, I'd love to hear it!

Hello it’s The Music Theorists, I’m on one of my main channels
Great to have you here! I hope you might be able to find something interesting in this new project of mine! 😁
The intro 🙃🤣 I'm looking forward to the process. This is something I'm completely unfamiliar with, but find quite interesting.
I'm happy to have you along for the ride! The creation of musicals normally happens very much behind closed doors, and isn't really shared very much; I want to open those doors, and make it accessible to anyone interested! 😄
I would still love to see that Great Gatsby idea some day, but oh my god a gothic, tragic love story between two serial killers? Sign me the fuck up
Oh, all of those ideas are still very much on the table for the future! I'm excited to do Lavinia's story in the meantime, and I'm glad you're enthused too! 😄 (And you better BELIEVE I'll be writing some demented love songs!)
16 yo me started writing a musical. It was supposed to be 30 minutes long, and would be played once by me and my friends with whatever talents we had. It didn't have to be good, I just wanted it to exist. It didn't work out of course, a musical requires such a vast array of skills I lacked. Couldn't even finish the text before I lost connection with that friendship group. But the story has been with me for over a decade now, it got much longer and intricate, turned into a cycle of 14 fantasy books (named The Impossible Musical 😂) that I'm now slowly writing just for fun. I don't work in that sphere, it's just a hobby for me. But like you said in the last part - I need it. Creating for the sake of creating may not have worked out how I expected it to at first, but it gifted me with a whole world to escape to in my fantasies and I don't know who I would be without this silly project that overtake my life ❤
I love this concept! You know, even just seventy years ago, that might not have been impossible- the Ring Cycle is still performed now, and that's about 15 hours of music!
_Comforter, philosopher, and lifelong shrimp_ 😂 solid gold self-censorship
Glad you appreciate it- I didn't realize what the actual word was until well into high school 😂
Exercise caution when locking yourself into a library; you may be evicted or even arrested for trespassing. Also you'll have to bring a lot of food unless you're a moth or bookworm 😂
Libraries are the best resources- no matter who you are, there's a place for you in the stacks. ❤️
Oh hang on, is this the piano ostinato you used at the end of your "don't write a musical" video? Also I'm obsessed with this song 😅 Is it a solo for Byron, or do other characters jump in at times? Is anything else from _Fantasmagoriana_ available to listen to???? 😭
Yes, it is! It's a solo for Byron, yes. The musical hasn't premiered yet, but once it does, I'll try to get a solid recording of the full soundtrack. In the meantime, I'll have a performance in May of a selection of songs, and that may end up being posted here! I know it's a while to wait, but I've been waiting even longer 😅
@@cashcomposerOooh, I can't wait!! I'm chucking that on my calendar so I'll be sure to check back :)
@@emilyrln I'll give you more exact dates to help: I'll be at Atomacon, on May 5!
Your voice is so expressive omg!!! The piano goes hard af and the lyrics are very well-crafted. I feel like I need to read them to fully appreciate everything that's going on; I know I only caught some of the internal rhymes and those between the shorter lines. Love the intensity throughout the song even as it goes from loud to soft. Minor quibble: some of the quieter spoken dialogue is hard to hear; maybe bring down the piano a bit on those sections or boost the voice. Brava!
Aw, thank you! I'm far from a professional singer so that means a lot. The original song is actually a fifth lower, and accompanied by a string orchestra- I just didn't want to worry about recording that, so I used a MIDI instead. The dynamic changes are a trademark of my writing; I like drama, and I feel that one of the greatest ways to manufacture intensity is through focused dynamic control. This is probably the single best example of that particular idea in anything I've written so far.
@@cashcomposer You're welcome! Re transposing and orchestration, that makes total sense. Honestly, I think the piano works really well for the spooky atmosphere, but I'm excited to hear it how you originally conceived it. Man, I've got to try writing something story-based! I usually just write folk-esque songs, and I've done one that may be some subspecies of rock or metal, but I'm unfamiliar with the taxonomy.
@@emilyrln please send me a link to one of your songs, I'd love to listen! Also, I added subtitles so you can better know the lyrics 👻

I identify so hard with that compulsion to create! My current book started on the day before Christmas 2023 when I woke up with an idea and had to write down as much of it as I could. Then I finished making and wrapping my Christmas gifts late into the night! By Friday the 29th, I had 28k words of outline and prose, plus some character writeups, research, and timeline info. I'm currently at 30k because I'm working again 😂 no, I cannot stop, but I also have so many other fun things that I absolutely must do that I end up dividing my time between writing, singing, quilting, sewing, knitting, drawing, playing the piano, writing music… so many things 😅
That creative spirit is so important! After inspiration strikes, maintaining a strong work ethic is tough for even the most seasoned writer- Sondheim famously procrastinated on everything he wrote, heck, even Mozart wrote an overture for an opera on the way to the premiere! It just takes time, focus, and ignoring those doubting voices- or better yet, writing in spite of them.
All of these ideas are something I would be really interested in, but the one that caught my interest the most is easily your Great Gatsby idea. Im not even really that interested in The Great Gatsby to be honest, but the idea of taking the story and centering it on Daisy is extremely interesting, especially adding horror elements to it is so original. It’s absolutely my favorite idea and the one I would be most excited to see become a full show. And would easily be my favorite Great Gatsby adaptation
Thanks! I never understood why people tend to frame the story around Nick and Gatsby- Daisy is so much more interesting, conflicted, and devastating. She's one of those characters that has stuck in my mind for years, and I feel like she's never gotten the attention she so desperately deserves.
That last point was extremely relatable….
I hope you mean the point that you should definitely write if you feel that compulsion, that love for the art. And not the one about critics being the worst. I'm going to assume you meant the former, and say, yay, glad to hear you can relate! I hope we're both able to overcome all those trials that come with our calling ❤️
@@cashcomposer Yes I meant that love for art! And I’m with you, hopefully we get our art out there one day and people actually enjoy it!
What about rock opera's?
Now you've got to convince the rock music people to come to a theatre, and the theatre people to let you bring rock music into their theatre- and the market is very much saturated, everyone is starting to use those more modern sounds now.
Carmilla!!!
It is one of my favorite historical queer stories, and I do love vampires!
I love the story and mystery of Jack the Ripper and focusing on the victims for once. Also, amazing job!
@@tmntfanreview Thank you! I recommend checking out the book "The Five" by historian Hallie Rubenhold, it's all about their various stories.
