Raspberries – I Wanna Be with You – 1972 [DES STEREO]
Thanking “Smurfstools Oldies Music Time Machine” for allowing me to post this great video on my channel.
"I Wanna Be with You" was recorded by Raspberries in January 1972 at Abbey Road studios, London. It was released in November 1972 as a single on Capitol Records and appeared on their 2nd LP, “Fresh”. It became their 2nd greatest US hit, peaking at #16 on the US Billboard Hot-100 chart. This performance is from “The Midnight Special” (S1, E15), broadcast on May 4, 1973. The show was hosted by Johnny Nash. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] of this classic hard rocker!
Personnel on this recording:
• Eric Carmen - bass guitar, lead vocal
• Wally Bryson - lead guitar, backing vocals
• Dave Smalley - rhythm guitar, backing vocals
• Jim Bonfanti - drums, backing vocals
About the original recording.
It was crappy, distorted mess! I tried my best to compress the super-shrill highs. This is the studio recording synched with this live TV performance. This original recording had virtually no stereo separation in order to make it sound super-punchy, which worked quite well.
About my DES STEREO Mix:
For Eric’s Lead Vocal, I kept him centered and added a touch of stereo reverb to give continuity to the stereo image. For the Backing Vocalists and I panned them Right reverbing into the Left. For the Lead Guitar, I gave it a surround-sound effect, slightly Left-Justified. For the Rhythm Guitar, I gave it a surround-sound effect, slightly Right-Justified. For the Drums, I gave it a slight surround-sound effect with a 25ms delay on the Left. For the Bass, I kept it centered with no further adjustments.
Technical Information:
I used DeMIX PRO v5.1.0 to isolate Eric’s Lead Vocal, Backing Vocals, Electric Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Drums and Bass into 6 separate tracks. I used SpectraLayers PRO-7 for stem cleanup. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range recovery, EQ, Delay, Reverb and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.

Again, a great stereo mix. Two different stereo mixes of this already exist, one with his Wee Haa shouts just faintly in the background, which I have on his CD on the Falcon label, I'm A Believer. czcams.com/video/GWMATrzIcnc/video.html A lesser good earlier take appeared on his remarkable box set In My Lifetime, as well as the mono single version. On the alternate version, the chorus part had not yet been written, and all that was on the chorus parts was snippets of filler. czcams.com/video/RC_1lEuH23w/video.html But Solitary Man would have been a better DES choice, as the original undubbed single version of that has never appeared in stereo, only the overdubbed recording with female backing vocal parts and electric piano. I did a stereo remix of the single version for myself.

Hi, Paul. Thanks for stopping by, Yes, the “Yee Haah” was almost non-existent in the original mono mix. Thanks for supplying the link to the original stereo version. I fondly remember that I hated it when it came out. The left channel was way to “busy” supporting the drums, bass AND acoustic rhythm guitars. I only had the mono version growing up. That alternate version is very interesting! But it’s amazing what happens when you have a good producer to make it sound great, as the released version was. I DO have the mono version of “Solitary Man”. I may do a DES of it in the future. I don’t want to suddenly have an homage to Neil on my channel. Thanks again for your divine presence. Great sound improvement as usual Bob. "early in her career" - not exactly, Petula was a child star in the forties and a popular recording artist by the mid fifties. It was the British Invasion that promoted her into the American Scene where Petula and Dusty were deemed as the female part of the British Invasion, although both started long before The Beatles. Petula then had the privilege of sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones on the Ed Sullivan show. But previous to the British Invasion, like any other British artist, she was completely ignored in the States, and had few records released there, then.

Thank you, sir Hoffmann for stopping by! I had forgotten that she started when she was very young! This was before she was known in the US. I will change my comments to reflect that AND add some information from her earlier career. Glad you enjoyed this “stereoized” snippet of her.

Great stereo mix. This was the second of two versions he recorded. The first was in 1950, and that had a drier sound. But his box set Columbia Singles vol 1 erroneously contained this second version twice, the first time among his 1950 singles there, instead of each version once.

    • @bobzwol

Thank you, Paul, for chiming in. I know I called-up the original 1950 version on CZcams, but have forgotten what it sounded like and need to listen to it again. As for the duplicated tracks, that’s easily caused by the mastering engineer dragging/dropping the wrong track into the “burn” list when the 2 track names are almost identical. Obviously, the engineer wasn’t familiar with Tony’s recordings and wouldn’t have caught that error, if he/she did any QA/QC at all... This track just screamed at me to convert to stereo! Its original mono mix was so perfect that I didn’t have to alter any EQ, dynamics or amplitude to make it sound great in stereo! Thanks again for stopping by! Always appreciated!

Thanks, Sammy! Didn't have to alter any EQ or amplitude. The original mono recording was great right out of the box. This one took quite a bit of manual labor to separate the reeds and the bass, but the results are worth it. The man sure could sing!

Thanks, Pete! Glad you’ve found my channel! Wow! I haven’t played this one in years! This is one of my earlier MONO-to-STEREO conversions. I’ve since purchased much better sound-separation software and can do a much better job on it by isolating the violin sole and separate the backing vocals from Frank’s lead vocal. I might have to revisit this one. It’s such an incredible song. Glad you liked it!

Thank you, Leigh, for stopping by! I hadn’t realized that this ending was an out-take that the director kept in the final cut! The guys snapped into position and saved this scene perfectly! It really worked well! It would have wasted the entire day’s shoot if they had to reset her hair and dry her costume to film it all over again.

Hi Sammy! Yes... I'm back! I took a 6-month DES hiatus. I needed to do stuff around the house. It's going to take me MONTHS to catch up with what YOU'VE done in the interim. It's 116-degrees here in the So Cal desert. Can't do much outside. So I;ll stay in and DES my little heart out. As for this video, one of my buddies asked me to restore it. I kindly obliged. I wish I could have done a better job on restoring the video-portion. TOPAZ couln't do much for it. Neither could DaVinci Resolve Studio. I remember you asked me to redo one for you. Please remind me which one that was.

@@smurfstoolsoldiesmusictimemach Thanks again for dropping by, Sammy and keeping the connection. Indeed. TOPAZ tends to make features too "cartoonish" if the source video is poor. Very annoying after it took 2-to-4 hours to render. I have around 20 DES projects started but couldn’t bring myself to do the tedious cleanup work in a Spectral Editor. I’ll get to ‘em sooner or later. Right now, I’m going to hop on to your channel and check out what you’ve been up to.

Great work as usual Bob, but surely there must be some better source material somewhere of this somewhat obscure movie? Gotta love the spy detector guy! J. Edgar Hoover apparently did not like the script, thinking it provided "a blueprint for the crime of extortion". I wonder why they made it an FBI story (requiring the Feds' approval) in the first place. A few years earlier it would likely have been private eyes like Spade & Archer.

Thank you, sir Hoffmann, for stopping by! I tried several video software products to clean up the crappy 360p source video, but I couldn’t get decent results. One of my friends from Los Angeles asked me restore this snippet of LA transit history. I was happy to do so.
