      The TinySA should be capable of scanning on that frequency. You may need signal attenuators when you get close to a source.

    I want to build the 3 wire version (T3FD). Let's say I use a 1000 ohm termination resistor. There seems to be disagreement about the balun. Can you explain how to choose a balun ratio of 9:1 vs 12:1 vs 16:1?

    • @A.R.O.T.A.
      @A.R.O.T.A. Před 23 dny

      the actual required balun is designed to reduce the resistance as close to 50 ohm as possible a 1000 ohm termination resistor would ideally require a 20:1 balun. The T2FD typically has an 800 ohm reister between the 2 sides, the WD-330s has a resistance closer to 1250 ohm that would require a 25:1 balun see my switchable balun for the number of winds required for each:- czcams.com/video/ko7jT_VyM3c/video.html

    I've used the SE HF-80 and the Plus kit setup including the G90 for over 3 years. I mount mine on an expandable speaker tripod stand so around 2m above ground. I've had excellent results from this setup. I'm mostly CW and have worked the world on 5w. The only niggle I have is the antenna skips the UK (I'm in South Wales) and its rare I get a UK QSO...the rest of the world yes but not the UK. 17m FT8 has been fantastic these last couple of weeks. Good video, 73

    • @A.R.O.T.A.
      @A.R.O.T.A. Před měsícem

      I think the problem your having getting UK QSO's will be down to the donut shape of the signal radiation pattern not working NVIS. You could try lowering the antenna so it reflects more off the ground. Alternatively a second horizontally polarised antenna such as a horizontal dipole or long wire would be required to work the high angles needed for NVIS.

    • @A.R.O.T.A.
      @A.R.O.T.A. Před 2 měsíci

      unlike the expansion kit the top whip only goes in a small amount just enough to secure it in with the 2 screws. No tuning of the main whip at all. Then just treat as a random wire for the radio side tuning where needed.

      @A.R.O.T.A. Před 3 měsíci

      You could try adjusting the angle of the 40m/80m kit but beyond that I am afraid I do not know what would work. The difficulty could even be caused by the current solar cycle. On my EFLW I have lost use of 40m and have to reduce power on 30m to QRP levels.

    I built one a few weeks ago, 133ft wire to a 9:1 balun, with about a 17ft wire on the, we'll call it the "negative" side of the balun, & a 50ft coax with a ferrite choke wrapped up in the coax near the radio end. Xiegu g90 tuned it on every band from 160m to 6m. I set it up once as a sloper, & once as an inverted L & made contacts both times. It's long but I wanted to give my radio an opportunity to work on all the possible frequencies. Nano vna showed no resonance anywhere along the frequency range. I'm pretty happy with it.

    • @A.R.O.T.A.
      @A.R.O.T.A. Před 4 měsíci

      There are 2 things to be careful of when choosing what paint to use. 1) it must be non-conductive and 2) there are a lot of paints that will degrade the plastic coating. As long as you can avoid these 2 problems it will be possible to paint it any colour you choose.

    That is the whole idea of these "random" antenna lengths. These lengths are resonant on a frequency, but not on any amateur radio frequency. Therefore, they are not for any particular band. Just put one up and see where it tunes. If your tuner cannot handle the mismatch, use a 9:1 Unun between the antenna and your tuner. For 80m- 10m, try the 71 ft length, it is close to a 1/2 wave on 40m and a 1/4 wave on 80m. Tthis can be deployed as a sloper, inverted V, an L or inverted L, a vertical . . . it is very versatile.

    Is the TinySA reliable? I want to make sure that it will last a good while. What attracts me to it is the fact that they are not insanely expensive in the same way that typical spectrum analyzers are. These may be useful for finding unauthorized devices like tracking devices and other bugs. By unauthorized I mean not necessarily illegal but a device that was placed without permission as most tracking devices would be. I imagine the majority of the devices would fall into TinySA's detection range of frequencies. Anything outside of that will need an amplified signal to get too much further especially seeing as how some WiFi does not penetrate walls too well. That is most likely the key reason why many cell phones work at around 900 MHz. Too high and you lose your signal when you go into a building with too much metal or a tunnel. Or if you live in a place where there are a lot of bridges the metal in them may in rare instances cause problems with reception. Now when it comes to blocking a signal I don't just blindly assume that a metal box or piece of foil will stop it from getting out. An example is that I use a Faraday pouch for my key fob so the signal is not always available. One way I test to see if it works is take it into the vehicle _with me_ so I don't lock it in if it works. Then I see if the vehicle will start. It should not start with it in there. Of course I knew it would work because it was designed to do that. Now I did try the metal box and aluminum foil and neither of them worked even the slightest bit. I am slightly annoyed since I wasted a bit of foil that should have been keeping food fresh but I feel good knowing I proved that myth wrong.

    • @A.R.O.T.A.
      @A.R.O.T.A. Před 8 měsíci

      My TinySA is still as reliable as the day I received it. I would recommend you also get some attenuators as strong signals could damage it. I'm afraid I have not looked into Faraday Cages/Pouches so can't advise you on them.

      Didn't see any point as it was only done as an experiment to see if it would work. I still have found no use for the 25:1 and 36:1 settings and the case is not waterproof due to holes drilled. I simply use it to determine the best balun/unun for the antenna and then construct one with the appropriate type.

    Thank you for showing and telling other hams about this family of antennas. I agree that what others say about this antenna is very confusing mainly because of the words used like random. Random is a bad word when it comes to this antenna. Just buy one put together and don't worry about the length. Your advice about needing a choke before going into the shack is very important.

    Many years ago, I had the Barker and Williamson 90 foot version of this antenna, up horizontally at 40 feet. Though it was rated at 1KW, I occasionally pushed it to 1500 on SSB with an Alpha 87A. (No-tune amp plus no-tune antenna minus an antenna tuner equals minimal effort.) I thought it worked very well on all the HF bands with the exception of 160m. I managed to heat up the once-white termination resistor housing so that it turned brown. Still worked fine. It didn't like 6m, but was oddly happy on 2m. I tried to buy another one but now B and W only makes it with stainless steel wire. The one that I had was Copperweld wire, which they said was no longer available. The stainless one costs a lot.

    Interesting video and great results 👍🏼 Might try one of these. I made my own EFW antenna last week, I used one of those ‘green’ numbers on the link you looked at (41feet) that fits nicely into the garden. The 9:1 balun was something I previously had for shortwave listening and I took a ground to a copper rod in the soil. Had some good results in Europe on SSB but nothing further and it tunes down to 40m with the transceiver ATU. Best results on 15m. I’d like to try a dipole but too inconvenient getting a centre support up in the middle of the garden. Anyway, if I try this Moonraker version I’ll report back if there is any improvement on what I am using.

      Counterpoise as in an extra piece of wire sometimes added to the earth side for better performance (not to be confused with a coper rod imbedded in the earth). Feedline as in coax yes.

    • @A.R.O.T.A.

      The 400w rating is also known as UK Max for full licence holders and in this case refers to ssb. CW & Data modes are normally a lot less so be sure to ask for a rating specific to these modes if you intend using them. I only have a UK foundation class licence and can only test upto 10w (far bellow the max rating for this antenna).

      @@A.R.O.T.A. Ahh, gotcha....I wasn't aware of the UK limitations, just assumed that was the max for the antenna. As for the CW and Data modes, I've never understood why anyone would use more than a few watts (20 or so).....actually even seems a bit rude when 5-10 watts will do the job...
