Filming Alone in Your Car with SmallRig's Magic Arm
If you are alone but still want to film inside your car while also driving, you might need a magic arm/friction arm.
SmallRig's Magic Arm is one of the top choices on the market for a good reason - it's hefty, tough and get's the job done. And when paired with the Super Clamp, it gets even better - you can attach it pretty much anywhere. How about your car? Let's take a closer look at it's pros, cons and shooting a super simple, downright dumb car sequence with it.

Just an ordinary, normal, slow week. But with a slightly cinematic cinematography. Shot on Samsung s21 Ultra. Kind of inspired by @DannyGevirtz's An Ordinary Day in 2023. Maybe a bit too much. Can I shoot a short Nike-inspired film using only my Samsung s21 Ultra, a tripod and a couple of filters? That's what I asked myself back in August. Found my old Sony Cybershot DSC-W120 and took some clips with it while on a summer trip to the Black Sea and Greece. Amazing video and very helpful !!! I'm inlove with this shot: czcams.com/video/J5htni3mOpA/video.html
Good!!!
Great vid! I have had this on my list for a while and your creative car sequence was great.
Hey Rob, good to see you! Yeah, it's a handy little thing to have. I'm looking at what other more engaging angles I can get while potentially not breaking anything in the car.
@@MyalismFilms Looks like a very adaptable tool for sure! Yeah don’t let it hurt your car any more. 😄
This is awesome!! Subbed!
Nice Video! I just already purchase this kind of magic arm and started to filming with. Yes, You are right, we have to concern about where to clamp this things because this things is gonna clamp hard to the surface. Cant wait for You another Video using this clamp for another creative shots! Cheers! 🎉
Thank you! They are a lot of fun to use and actually super practical. Have fun using yours! What are you planning to shoot first with it?
Sooo Lovely...😍🥰
Gracias!

This was very well made. What filters did you use?
Thank you! Just some solo cinematography practice! I used an ND 16 from Hoya and the 20% Cinebloom from Moment.
@@MyalismFilms Did you do a lot of post processing to the image? How did you get the soft edges?
@@limitedmeansproductions6725 I have a couple of nodes in Resolve that I've used to adjust the hue, shadows, highlights, contrast, gamma and gain and on a few shots I have the Glow fx to emphasize what's already there, but for the majority it's just the Cinebloom softening the edges. There is a grain filter on top of everything and two LUT's - one is a Kodak, the other is a "cinematic" teal and orange. I'll add that to the video breakdown I plan on doing soon.
*Great News 👏 👍*
was hoping for more footage
There is more footage coming soon! I've been shooting extensively with the Moment and some of the upcoming videos will showcase that.
Hey Nice video, I'm excited for you and the journey you are embarking on to achieve your goals. I myself have been editing for 16 years now and I am still learning every day! I am also using This year to hone in on story telling! And will be reading a few of these to. Love that you are learning from books aswell btw. It's also my fav way to learn. Can I recommend a couple of books for you to add to the list? (If you haven't read them already) GRIT by Angela Duckworth and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I just adored these a lot and I've gotten a lot out of them. They are not related to editing at all but I felt you might get some value from them as they are all about perseverance, mind set and goal setting. Which you touched on :) I wish you the Best of luck with your goals! :)
Thank you for the kind words! I haven't come across the books you mentioned, but I will take you up on the recommendation! Thank you! Always appreciate a good book and even more from a fellow editor! Any particular book you are looking to start first from the ones I mentioned? I'd love to hear your thoughts! I just wrapped up Foundations of Screenwriting and am spending time with In The Blink of an Eye. Fascinating so far! Good luck on your journey as well! P.S. Your motion graphic skills are 🔥! I've been tinkering in Fusion with some simple ones, but yours are great inspiration!
Yes I'm actually just about finished a reread of blink of an eye. And was going to check out art of the cut. And I've also read save the cat and steal like an artist and enjoyed both. I've honestly got 3 books on the go atm and like 20 on the read list haha 😅 However I'm actually particularly interested in essay style story structure at the moment rather than script because I want to get better at passing on information haha. Ive just looked up fusion and I'm shocked to say I've never heard of it! I do like that it's node based. Perhaps I shall check it out one day. 😊
Tell me about it! I'm reading a book for work in the mornings, then switching to storytelling/editing in the evening and trying to save some time on the weekends for fiction...and there's the backlog I have of started but not yet finished books. I actually first started listening to Art of the Cut catching up with the older episodes, but I know the book is also really good. I'll be either jumping in it or Cut to the Monkey after In the Blink. Haven't decided yet. What are some good recommendations on essay style story structure? On Fusion, it's very interesting to learn, sometimes it can be intimidating because even if you say want to replicate an effect that someone has done in Ae, you gotta know your nodes and how to connect them. I've done some small graphics and even thought of uploading a short compilation on the channel. But overall I want to use more graphics whenever possible in certain videos. God bless YT tutorials for that!
@MyalismFilms I just skimmed a book called level up your essays. It was good. But It was mainly geared towards uni students. There's so many writing styles! Everything has a little bit unique to take in. so I'm working my way through finding the decent ones lol
hey, interesting stuff. Your video is pretty well made. I liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing :) Greetings from Romania 👍👍
Thank you Cristian!
These are the books I plan on reading in 2024. The majority of them are about video editing or storytelling and screenwriting. I came to the conclusion that my video editing & storytelling skills are pretty low. So I need more information. And it starts with these books. Here's how I plan to implement them in my daily routine & stick to the plan to get that 1% better. P.S. Every resource I mentioned in this video is listed in the description. Grab them and go nuts! ✨💙
how did you make this look so much like film?
That's what comes straight from the camera! Resolution is 640 x 480 & focal length is about 35-128mm. Kinda the perfect match for simulating film. The only downside is you have about 10 min of video, but for short clips it's perfect.
This is so helpful, thank you! I'm going to try these techniques to get some footage at my local park. I can't always shoot with subjects so I'm curious to at least practice in nature and get some helpful b roll at least. Thanks for the great tips and techniques!
Awesome! Hope you have fun! Let me know which you liked the most!
I've just got my new Beastgrip Pro for my Samsung s21! I picked up the anamorphic lens too but I'm still getting a weird fish eye look. Any idea on what's happening? Did I mount it incorrectly?
Nice choice! I believe for the anamorphic, you have to make sure it's perfectly aligned with your camera and mounted horizontally. If you have a phone case on, try without one. Are you using Filmic Pro to capture your footage? Anamorphic needs to be desqueezed. Filmic has an anamorphic setting for easy use. Less headaches too. Though for Android phones, there are always headaches with filming apps! 😁
@@MyalismFilms Thanks so much! I'll try with the Filmic Pro app and hope I get some better results. Thanks again - you're the only CZcamsr I can find using the exact same equipment so you're a godsend! lol
@@lalalakia Let me know if it works! We can troubleshoot from there if needed.
@@MyalismFilmsThanks! Still having issues - any way to troubleshoot via dm?
Which lens are you trying to use it with? Also, what aspect ratio? I don't have an anamorphic at hand to try it myself, but vignetting or slight distortion are sometimes common, although they shouldn't be too strong or noticable to make your footage unwatchable. If you're having issues with the desqueezing process, these might help: www.shopmoment.com/reviews/4-easy-ways-to-de-squeeze-anamorphic-footage and momofilmfest.com/de-squeeze-anamorphic-for-iphone-or-android/ @@lalalakia

Hi, cool work! We'd like to collaborate, how can we get in touch? :)
If you want to use both the wide angle & the telephoto in one go, here's one way you can do that: czcams.com/users/shortsqMncTbqTU7Y?feature=share
Thanks
Thank you so much for this video. It is very informational, especially on the lens filter. Beastgrip have ran out of stock on their step up ring, and i need an alternative source. Do you have the link to the K&F step-up ring at the 7:26 mark? I tried to search on their website but couldn't find it. I could only find the 18-piece pack. Perhaps I was searching with the wrong keyword. So, a link would help me greatly. Thank you. 😊
Thank you for the kind comment! I believe I picked up the K&F from a local store and they seem to have run out of that sizing option. The 18 piece pack is handy to have, but with the Beastgrip you can only go as far as a 58mm, and the 52 is still the sweet spot, unless you detach the mount part of it and use an external filter mount like this one: www.shopmoment.com/products/open-box67mm-filter-mount/ But if you want to stick to the original setup, then a 37 to 52 mm step up is the only one you'll need. I think you should be fine with pretty much any step up ring on the market, but of the more solid ones, Cokin & Sensei are ones that come to mind which are both available on the B&H website: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=37-52mm%20step%20up%20ring%20adapter&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps There's also an Amazon fan favorite called Fotodiox Metal Step Up Ring, which is a cheap option. I've found that using the older lens plates (the wider ones) with no rubber protection and the step up ring gives me more room to cover more cameras. I should probably make a video on that as well...
@MyalismFilms Wow! I'm so grateful for this information that you have shared. I'm new to lens filter, and the links along with your explanation (simple to understand yet concise) helped me a ton. I am likely to go with the original setup. I will definitely do my own homework by checking out the Cokin, Sensei and Fotodiox. Thank you once again, and I will look out for your next video notification. Cheers. 😁👍
@bwtan7833 Happy to help! If you have other questions, feel free to ask! In the meantime - happy filming!

The only problem I have with mobile filmmaking is the damn storage issue on your phone. Can you make a video on how to deal with too much storage on your phone so I can film a bunch of stuff?
Hey, hey! Thank you for the comment! Storage can be a pain, I know. Inbuilt one has limitations. No storage expansion means your phone gets full pretty fast. I usually have an SSD with me or a flash drive, so if I start running out of storage, I can easily transfer videos on the go. I also try to film shorter clips, so the size of one file is not massive. Much easier to work with and transfer smaller file sizes. I've noticed that for videos like this one, I rarely go above 10 GB, and for short film projects, between 10 and 15 gb, all 4k videos. I make sure that before I shoot anything, I have enough free space and if I don't, I migrate files to my PC or SSD prior to filming - my filming device is my personal one, so space is always clutch. A 500 gb SSD has been really helpful to keep working files on. Once I finish filming, I transfer everything and then delete it off my phone. I can whip up a video with these and more tips, sure!
While I shoot mobile, I can’t edit in mobile at all. My stuff is usually sound design heavy and I just find it a pain to do it mobilly
I feel ya! While I enjoy the freedom and versitility of mobile apps, I started to get agitated especially on longer videos, and I started seeing more bugs on my Android tablet. I think it's really cool for light editing and some video effects and still very useful as a skill. Just not for long-term video editing purposes.
Do you need a PC or just a mobile device for video editing? 🤔 Let's talk about build your very own PC for video editing purposes, why I think it's SUPER important to have a decent editing machine early on, how much it cost, what hardware I chose and what are my takeaways, but also why I appreciate editing on a mobile device (and still do it when not at my PC). Plus, there are handy links in the description!
I LOVE UR WORK MAM

Were these pictures taken on a potato? Why do look like downgraded Jpegs? Is this caused by the filter?
Not really. It's the YT compression mostly. Check these out I posted to Twitter - same filter and phone twitter.com/MyalismFilms/status/1637495155031670788?t=unc9WpnTKTF7fgXzNDkklg&s=19
