All my life I’ve been a huge rural blues fan. My grandfather used to spin old blues records like Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee when I was a kid so that kind of Rockabilly country blues groove lives inside me. So I would say that the song is inspired by the blues music that came out of plantation fields. ‘Running Away’ is a continuation of the thematic elements of the album on Pathways. Each song has a certain weight to it that speaks to letting go and trying to elevate oneself from burdens that have caused hurt. In this song I’m literally trying to say that I’m not over the hurt and want to run away from it. I love that this is the first take of the song right off the floor. We cut it a few more times but nothing had the electrifying spark that the first take had - one and done which rarely happens
