@@randyscharf1505 if you struggle with Linux and want a good gaming experience I'd recommend installing Nobara. GE does the heavy lifting for you so you don't have to tinker around as much. Regarding your aio you may give liquidctl a shot. Not sure if it supports lcd screens tho. Also no need to "install" motherboard drivers since most of them should be in your Linux kernel already. For a smoother installation of Star Citizen you may find github.com/starcitizen-lug/lug-helper helpful. The script guides you through almost everything.

@@R1po Happy to see another fellow on the bright side of life 😁 Although I'd recommend Fedora (or Nobara in that regard) you can play SC on Ubuntu as well. The only downside would be that you'd miss out on a ton of optimizations GE did to the kernel and OS itself to make the gaming experience better. You could always do it by yourself, but it's a hassle tbh. SC will still run, tho. So you may give it a shot before you switch, just to see if you can keep your current setup or would be better off trying something else.

That really depends on the usage imo. I'd say yes, if you don't play competitive games that relies on kernel anti cheats or use software that's proprietary to windows without a decent alternative on linux. VR is something that gets better in Linux but is still far from being as reliable (at least in my case). You could use dual boot to see if that works best for you.

@@jinz0 If your computer is beefy enough it'll benefit from Vulkan under Linux by a lot. On my tests I got a slightly better performance on Linux (using Vulkan) than on Windows. Compared to DX3D i have a way smoother experience (less stutters and micro lags) due to better frametime. Keep in mind that the Vulkan implementation is still beta, so they may break or optimize it in the next few patches. With DX3D I have a little less FPS on Linux. Its still close to Windows in most occasions. What are your hardware specs?

@@jinz0 The difference is not big, even on beefy systems. Basically the only reason to switch is if you don't like Windows or its poor privacy management. If that is of no concern to you, you probably will have a better experience on Windows unless CIG releases a native launcher for Linux and optimized Vulkan/the game.

I'm not very familiar with the Intel Arc generation but from what I've heard they mostly focus on DX12 optimization rather than Vulkan. Which is unfortunate if you want to play SC because you only have the choice of using DX11 or Vulkan. Not sure if Intel has changed much since that but I wish you the best in somehow being able to get acceptable performance in SC and leaving Windows behind.

That's to be expected to some degree. As you can see in the video on Vulkan it uses up to 30Gb of RAM. Even on DXVK it easily consumes around 30-35Gb of RAM. That'll probably change in the future, once it's optimized. Until then you better upgrade to at least 32Gb. I'd recommend even more, just to be sure in your case. Especially if you plan on continuing using Vulkan.

Well, yeah that's one way to deal with it as well. But keep in mind that swap is magnitudes slower than RAM. Which is why I still recommend more RAM over swap.

@@Thyrador I activated swap here and the game opened and I was able to play normally using Vulkan, in the future I will buy more RAM.

Much luck. If you can wait a little longer there'll be Vulkan coming next patch and I intend to conduct a test as well to see how good it will perform (hoping it'll run without major drawbacks). Currently it does perform worse on Windows, but who knows how that goes once it's not just implemented but also optimized.

@@Thyrador was a good video and you're using Linux so I thought I'd ask if you happened to be in their. 🙂 They recently helped me a bunch with creating a swap file(I'm new to this Linux stuff) and are all around good people. I was thinking about nobora but jumped into arch instead and of course it's a lot to learn haha maybe I'll give this a go. Either way nice video and keep up the work.

Hey pal. If you're new you might check out github.com/starcitizen-lug/lug-helper These guys did a great job to make it as easy for beginners as possible. Just follow the instructions precisely and you should be good to go. Although they're not up to date most of the time but it's solid enough what they provide. If you need any further help just let me know.

After the usual shader walk there's no much difference compared to Windows, if your system is beefy enough. I was able to hit 143 fps with the latest dxvk version (2.1), so it's not far from the regular Windows experience. Still expect random stutters, even if they're rare. The overall smootheness is better on Windows, until CIG optimises the engine enough to not make it any difference anymore.

Yeah. The occasional ~5 minutes where the stutters were just unbearable, despite similar fps, didn't make it into the video. This is just a recording of my third testing session. The first one was just to get it running again, with the shader walk included. Second was for the sole purpose of testing and tweaking whereas the third was just for "showcase", after I was happy with the results. I never had these kind of framerates on windows, so it got me by surprise too.

@@IDK973 what was your experience with Arch? GE just did a lot of under the hood customizations with Nobara that affects the performance by a lot, compared to other distributions I tried. I'm sure you can get a similar experience if you know what you're doing. Since GE is the one knowing this stuff way better than me I jumped on the Nobara train after I got fed with (K)Ubuntu. It's stable and fit my needs as a workstation and for gaming too. What else could I want? :)

@@Thyrador it run pretty well on arch but got some limitations due to my HW. I got a Nvidia rtx 2080 and for 2023 aim to be full AMD since I only use Linux now. But even with Nvidia I use the GE runners on lutris and it work great

@@IDK973 haha, don't remind me of all the Nvidia shenanigans going on. Even tho the performance is great so far but sometimes I want to smash things when Nvidia is at it again, messing up the drivers, lol.
