It’s because the whole idea is that we learn to move through life on these boards like wheelchair users do, til it becomes second nature. Everyone needs to learn for it to work. Skate parks are silly compared to this dream. I don’t skate, but even I can see this.

skateboarding is exactly this. this video expresses how i feel as a skater perfectly. after seeing the world in a skaters eyes there’s no going back. it’s a breathe of fresh air; seeing the streets and our environments in a way no one else does. it’s something truly only a skateboarder will understand. i will show this video to everyone i know so they can also understand how it is we see things. we don’t want to destroy anything, we’re just trying to express ourselves. thank you for making this video and putting it in words the common man can understand :)

As an anthropologist and skater myself, I loved this video. The audiovisual part is tight and clean. I did not like the explicative, sort of scientific tone of the narrator, but I find this a super compelling way of communicating thoughts and findings about skate practices and communities. Keep it up! There's a lot to be said. I'm amazed about the comparison you make between skateparks and street spots, and the thesis that there's an explorative essence to skateboarding, in which skaters inhabit architecture and planning of the city in different and inventive ways. I also like how you mention how hard is to understand from a logical point of view. Adding to that, I also believe that the active presence of elements like cameras and phones, as well of a filmmaking culture, motivate skaters to search for interesting spots and rediscover, reinvent the city, record it and arrange it in a way they can feel represented, present, expressed.

"Hubba" is an antiquated 20th century street slang term for crack cocaine. A ledge down a set of stairs is just a ledge.....down a set of stairs. The terminology of "hubba" is a misunderstanding regarding the name for one specific spot : hubba hideout. Anthropologists originally thought that the term "hubba" was a reference to the famous ledge at this spot, but through breakthroughs in translating historical records it is now understood that the spot was not named for it's buttery and tall ledge, rather it was named "hubba hideout" by the late Mayor of Embarcadero to denote the spot's frequent use as an impromptu drug den for addicts whose drug of choice was smoking crack cocaine, also known at the time as "hubba".

Reason why I don't skate at the skate park are: 1. Adult skaters are generally look down upon as being too old for the sport 2. Park is busy with different levels of abilities and some at dangerous levels causing accidents 3. Get targeted by others to either be asked to "score" or "do you have any" drugs 4. Get asked for money from vagrants and unsavoury characters 5. Skateparks are more watched by Police and Security guards, but anything happens they never are there, very ironic 6. Skateparks are dirty and dangerous 7. There are many more reasons why not to visit the park Therefore street it is
