Send it! May Canyon; Descents Only
Ride hosted by Gravel Bike California; we went up May Canyon to Camp 9 (which is a hair under 4,000 elevation), a nasty 5+ mile climb averaging over 6% gradient.
Titled on-the-nose, the descents are the most fun and watch-worthy (seriously, who wants to listen to me or my bike groan going uphill?) where the roads are mostly abandoned early weekend as we threaded through a section of Angeles National Forest and came back over Kagel Canyon (singletrack near end) and then the super-fast Lopez Canyon Road (taken at 50mph on 2.2" tire) to mock sprint finish at san Fernando Brewing Company
The thing I don't like about action cameras in general is it's VERY hard to get the sense of just HOW steep a lot of these roads and trails are.

Personal second-favorite trail behind the Backbone segment; Sin Nombre and Two Foxes take you from the fire road down through the meadows, twisting around some old oaks, and then lets you run flat-out. Two Foxes usually has hikers and stream crossings, so it may not be wise to go full pedal to the metal. The end of Two Foxes, when ridden from the top, ntersects Wood Canyon Fire Road, where you ...

Bumpy! Guadalasca winds down into Wood Canyon, adjoining Sycamore Canyon on the Pacific side of the Santa Monica Mountains. Summertime yields amazing views of the canyons below; if you're brave enough to take your eyes off the trail

My personal favorite singletrack section in the entirety of the Santa Monica Mountains, this Backbone segment is fast, smooth, and twisty, offering fantastic views and is an absolute joy to ride.

I bought waterproof socks specifically for when I'm up in this canyon. There's always at least four creek crossings, but today had a lot more! Fun fact; a couple years ago when I first rode up here, SoCal had had a lot of rain. The creek at 3:18 was up over my knees and I had to carry my bike across instead of riding. The current was nuts!

Heading back towards the ocean along the northern ridge of Sycamore, the grueling uphill turns into a fun, fast singletrack connecting the top of Guadalasca, passing the top of Hell Hill, and links you up with the Overlook Fire Road; take this either back down to the Sycamore Fire Road...OR you can swing to the left after passing the sign for Hell Hill and take Backbone, which is far more enjoy...

On the way back to Topanga Creek Outpost, Summit to Summit Motorway is a long, dusty fire-road with plenty of singletrack options branching on and off all the way back to Topanga Canyon Blvd. The last section is a personal favourite, Ingram DH. Fast, flowy, and with plenty of optional jumps it's possible to hit it all in less than a minute; but be warned there are sometimes hikers on it as well...

Group ride with Topanga Creek Outpost; Skidmarks and Like Fire include a jumpline and singletrack off the Calabassas Peak Motorway, some of the best trail in the area. Definitely worth the steep, grueling and unshaded ride to the top of Calabassas Peak for!

Average commute home, first set of clips. Pretty typical. Lots of MOTORISTS running red lights. Some bike lane blockage. Mild profanity, but that's per the usual.

2nd grouping of clips for an average afternoon commute home, again in off-peak hours. Nothing extra-out-of-the-ordinary happens, mild language may occur at one or two entitled motorists blocking the bike lane and preventing safe travel for me.

Glimpse as to why I get up at 0-dark thirty to commute by bike to work in Los Angeles, the roads are usually empty and I have plenty of lights and space. Clips are average traffic, lighting, speed, etc; nothing extraordinary happening Mild cussing at an LADOT bus driver in the beginning near Venice Blvd and La Cienega, bus driver didn't check his mirrors and cut me off. It was a lot closer than...

Favorite bits from riding up Mandeville Fire Road to the Nike Missile site from Westridge Trailhead, down Canyonback to Kenter Whoops. More rattle/humming noise from my rear hub making its way through the frame to the camera, weirdly. I did have a brief exchange with a dog owner early on, prime example of how entitled hikers are here in LA. Her dog was blocking a singletrack section and refused...
