Women Carry Water | Amikaeyla Gaston, World Trust | Edge Prize 2023 Submission
World Trust is excited to announce that we are beginning work on a new media project! “Women Carry Water” is an immersive docuseries that lifts the voices, experiences, and work of female-identifying people championing vital, healing, sustainable, spiritual practices as Water-Bearers. The series features interviews from Indigenous healers, folk artists, carbon sequestration scientists, a musician who sings with whales, and stories of women like Thandekile, who carry water to her home and family in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are concurrently building an app that highlights multi-faceted opportunities for each person who interacts with them to “walk a mile in her shoes” and visualize the different paths these Water-Bearers walk. This video (created as a part of a submission to “The Edge Prize” 2023 cohort) features World Trust Co-Executive Director, Amikaeyla Gaston, talking about her relationship to water and our new film project.
The Edge Prize is a bioregional community, accelerator, and prize challenge focused on Salmon Nation, a bioregion defined by the historic range of wild Pacific salmon, from the Salinas River in California, north to the Yukon River in Alaska.

Is access to higher paying also based on color and caste? If so, housing and school resources etc are linked to the racial caste system that stands guard over who will ascend and how far...American Caste is very on guard at lending institutions and HR offices....
SOWK 698A
Hi, it's funny that I see your entries here and there on the same videos for my MSW program! SOWK 593 for me 🤣
Thats a typical form of internalized racism that can be dealt with. *Nobody can make you feel inferior* *without your consent.*
I disagree with this because most people are oppressed from a very young age. Self-oppression is instilled in most of us by society/parents/the media/governmental systems from a very young age - which makes it out of our control. And so it is without ‘consent.’ Or rather - it isn’t a conscious decision to give them our consent.
Considering that ALL schools are integrated, how does one answer the question as to why students of every race end up in different means of equity or financial status when they all attended the same school? Students who home school have far better education than those in the traditional school setting? Again, one has to ask why?
When the Brotha said black boys are the mascot’s of HighSchool he wasn’t lying.
Delusional Marxists.
The worst kind of inequity, is trying to make unequal things equal.🤔 Aristotle. (read on) Why is inequality important? While the thought of inequality may cause us some emotional discomfort, it is true. How would you make a professional athlete and a couch potato equal in sports? You can only try to pull the athlete down to the level of the weakest person. This is the basis of the Kurt Vonnegut short story “Harrison Bergeron“. Even the cursory synopsis on the Wikipedia page can make you revile the idea of forcing everyone down to the same level, just to make them all equal. NOTICE I didn't mention Race, she had to, BUT when it comes to Basic Human rights, voting medical care etc I tend to DISSAGREE with Aristotle's view.
So sad!
Dr. DeGruy comprehensively explains both the offense of everyday inequality and the acknowledgement and use of white privilege to address it.
These same racial issues has come full circle. 2020 today! Wow!
Tim Wise thanks for the truth.
Consider ,racism is used to keep folks of diverse hues, cultures tongues in conflict while the hidden rulers ,who too many cases ,plot to become 'god's' in the minds the functional ignorant masses. I wonder as I wander who put those thoughts into their minds , and what is the true nature/source of human &nonhuman evil.????!!?
She's a student of "color". 🙄🙄🙄🙄
She is a former classmate of mine, and although she is mixed race (Afro-Caribbean) and may pass as white for people who don't know her, she has always identified as a person of color and has been very outspoken on issues of race, class and ethnicity since the 1990s when I knew her.
@@sashaross194 Afro Caribbeans are of African decentants. Its amazing that white people in America are still focusing on the one drop (black) lol
Maybe that property tax system of more money the better the school needs to be overhauled. More of an equal system where every school gets adequate resources
I didn't know she was a colored woman. Sure didn't know Asian women called themselves colored women either.
She did not identify herself as a colored woman.
@@sashaross194 True. But the system does.
I love her courage to research
You mean.....You love her courage to Live LIFE?
I don't know??
I don't have anything nice to say about this video... Horrendous!!
Racism isn’t nice, it is horrendous going thru it and especially as a child.
Liberal,full of crap bitch!!!

You are blessed and thank you for sharing your blessings.
This is so beautiful! And so true. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
powerful, we need this generation of grandmas to speak life into our kids, to bless them, to tell and show them the way, to warn them of the dangers, to tell them how beautiful they are, to tell them they are somebody and that they are beloved child of God!
Asante Sana Baba Jerry. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for inspiring me to keep my traditions alive. Thank you for being willing to be your authentic self. Ase Baba.
Other ways ARE possible!
I love your videos with this girl! An amazing message is shown here!
what the hell this brotha talking about with this blue poem , brown boy shit.
+jason lowery Wow...if you couldn't follow that, I suggest more schooling for you.
+Nico Hicks Sir u hit that on the head, if you couldn't understand that poem you are deaf, dumb and blind!
had to look at it again, makes more sense, maybe it was the delivery that threw me off. Im not good with poems, i would rather say the united states has created this hate and poverty and now its left to the police state and prisons to keep blueboy in line. Blueboy better wake the hell up!!!
Love this sister, keep up the good work!
I disagree, because that's one of the main reasons why "they: the rude, racist, inconsiderate, privileged, etc.," are still in that negative one track thinking, because nothing is being done about it nor said. However, I do respect your opinion and can understand. I just wish we all were just genuinely peaceful to one another. This is my hope. :(
Oh my goodness, NO!!!!!!!! :'(
There's a huge problem and my husband, children and I, are doing a lot to help change this, RACISM/PRIVILEGE. :'(
That was amazing. Thank you for sharing!
Wow only 1 minute and I had to stop and think about what she said..sometimes it's definitely easier on yourself to not be aggressive about small things like this, unless it's complete disrespect
This is great - but I wish in addition to "it's not your fault" there was some mention of "...but it is your responsibility, to re-educate yourself."
"good" neighborhood or upper middle-class neighborhood? Excellent sharing... And it's very hard for black parents to choose to leave most other black families and move into spaces where their children maybe the mascot in every white-only classroom.
This is a well-hidden secret but I've been negatively impacted by blacks that have internalized self-hate.
well-explained!
See, if SHE had said something to that cashier, she would not only have been called an angry black woman stereotype, but keep in mind her claims and complaints would most likely be ignored because she'd be """pulling out the race card""". When people of color such as myself point out racial problems in our society, white people tell us we're pulling the race card. But when white people (or white-passing, in this case) do it for us, they are often listened to, and referred to as noble. Which isn't to say Cathleen (Kathleen?) didn't do a good thing! It's just that we must keep in mind what would have happened if it were the speaker who had said something.
Why are we calling her Joy? Isn't it customary to show some respect? Her name is DR. Joy DeGruy.
That's quite a story. I would pay good money to see the look on that cashier's face.
This is something to make us all think
damn this makes me angry
I'm glad your in-law stepped in and defended you!
Well said and thanks for posting this video.
Real
So frighteningly true
Urban planners use the U.N. blueprint for 'sustainability'. It's based on the 1992 Rio de Janeiro environmental treaty- they will run all of us into the cities, as they are trying now. Small rural property owners are being given a horrible time; their land is being taken away. People are being run into the cities. Look up 'Democrats Against Agenda 21. Look up San Francisco lawyer Rosie Koire, and her interviews. Will scare you to death.
It does in some way. But that's not what this video is about. And if you want to talk about racism with other minorities and racism with black people you have to understand that it is different. One of the reasons why it is different is because of the history of centuries of slavery and then racial segregation. There is absolutely a problem with racism and homophobia and misogyny but please hear people out for what they are talking about before insisting that there are other problems.
Very eye opening and done with grace.
This applies to any member of a group that is not the majority and possessing political power. It's not limited to black people. It applies to LBGT people, women, people from other cultures and people from other areas.
