    When it comes to Slipjoints Case wins , but when it comes to lockbacks and belt knives Buck definitely wins. There was a time when Buck could hold their own with slipjoints, but those days are long gone. The snap on their slipjoints is pretty weak these days, and their hollow Saber grind isn't as good as the full hollow grind Case uses. Back in the 90's the full flat grind buck used was so much better. The 420HC from Buck is better than the Tru Sharp from Case, but it's hard to beat the carbon steel from Case when they offer it on a knife you want in a cover option you want. The elk stag from the Buck custom shop is nicer than any stag Case offers too.

    I am currently experimenting with using 12% hydrogen peroxide to bleach the dye out of some bone handles before dying them. normally 6% is recommended / used, but I couldn't find 6% and 3% didn't work. I knew the 12% would work but the question is whether roughly 24 hours in that 12% is enough to harm the bone in any way. If you're not familiar, you just leave your knife submerged in the peroxide for a day or so until the bone is bleached out. when using peroxide to bleach yellowed plastic the process calls for leaving the item in direct sunlight, so that is what I'm doing here. just a warning though, the peroxide soak does effect the polish on the bone and you'll need to bring the luster back.

      @@JohnKlahr So far I left a frost Cutlery bulldog brand in I think they called it " Brindle bone ", and it has bleached out quite a lot without harming the bone. I had an old 70's-80's ATCO in a brown bone that is lightening up quite a bit without damage. And lastly I've been soaking a poorly dyed " Dark Red " Case, and so far the peroxide doesn't seem to have really done anything. Red is one color that I've seen many people have trouble with, whether it's a Case or a Rough Rider red seems to be a color that doesn't bleach out very well. It has not harmed the bone, but it has tarnished the bolsters quite a bit. It really seems to depend on the color. I've been testing because I got a new carbon steel case barlow and their ugly grey bone was the only option. I won't know till I go for it, but I think the grey bone is going to be a color that bleaches out fairly well with the 12% peroxide.

    Cactus Jigged Bone is a perfect name. Is one Angry Kid Food safe? I use most of my Traditional knives in the kitchen for food prep. I was thinking about using Food grade Mineral oil on all my knives but some people question its toxicity. Also Have you ever used Alcohol based Leather dye like Fiebing's Their British Tan seems to be a very close match to the brown in R.R. Cinnamon Stag Bone series. I use Fiebing's to stain wood often as well as Bingo Markers which are water base. Bingo Markers might also work well on Bone Knife scales with out having to heat the dye up first. Any way, Thank you for showing your process. Glad I subscribed.

    Ok, I just stopped the video and tried this several times with my Rough Ryder Bow Trapper and it did not work. There is a bit of play in the main blade in half stop position. Can there be a different issue and maybe a different fix to the blade centering issue?

    • @JohnKlahr
      @JohnKlahr Před 9 dny

      @@flitdek yes, I wish I had gone into more detail but wanted to make it short, 1) if the hole is not drilled perpendicular to both sides of frame=in this scenario you should see a flaw in the bolster as the pin would show a gap on one side. 2) Hole is not drilled perpendicular in blade itself. This would result in noticeable gap on both sides of blade between blade and liners but opposite from one side of blade to the other. Both of the above scenarios unfortunately can’t be repaired without drilling out a larger pin hole and inserting a larger pin. The more common issue , with the fix I recommended is that there is a burr on one side of the blade from where it was punched out from a solid sheet of steel. The fixed I described works on Case knives with brass liners but with steel liners not so great. And if not done early enough the knife will wear away at the liners itself and make it harder if not impossible to center once it wore itself in crooked.

    • @flitdek
      @flitdek Před 9 dny

      @@JohnKlahr Thank you for responding. The pin seems fine, no noticeable gapping. Maybe the hole in the tang is a touch off. Many Rough Ryders have this issue. They make some beautiful knives. I just wish they would fix this issue with their build. Small gap in the spring I can tolerate but blade centering issues jus make me feel bad about mu purchase, and make me question buying Rough Ryder. Thanks again.
