The Most RIDICULOUS Backpacking Gear There Is
I love your new chaotic video content….dog and child are the videographer’s wild cards. You could not have scripted this.
@@wanderworm no script or plan. just turn the camera on and go
Love your son and your dog. You're not bad yourself.Love my Bora 70 and UGQ winter dream 12.
@@wixmich08 You're too kind! And a good taste in gear
Awe your kiddo is adorable. Best way to get footage with the kids is to just strap a go pro to your shoulder :) hands free and you can turn it on and off whenever they do something cute. Chris took out the Bora 80 for sunshine to shark.
I love the Bora pack. Ive had mine since I was 19, damn near 20 years old and still going strong. That pack has seen thousands of KM of trail. I've actually got a head mount I plan on tossing on him during our hikes. Ive done it at some of my fiancé's ball tournaments, and our family camping trips, and it always results in some hilarious footage. Hoping to get some "Maddox vision" out on trail
@@MattyOutdoors oh fun! Maddox vision! lol
@@MattyOutdoors yes I think we bought the Bora’s at least 22 years ago. They have been up many mountaineering routes. They are kind of retired now but Chris likes to pull it out once in a while.
@alpineearth I use mine for winter trips mostly, as the under and top quilt for my hammock gets quite bulky.
A Hammock is a hit with my kids.
@user-lh8bg3ni3r Maddox absolutely loves hanging out in a hammock too! Unfortunately, the site we planned to hike to doesn't allow hammocks
Whenever I take my boys (6 and 3) I absolutely take a ball of some sort. Something they can throw, kick, float, whatever. Throwing a tennis ball down the trail for them to chase after works for miles!
@TheNypenfan I thought about a ball, and if Wanda would play with a ball I definitely would.. But, her thing is a stick, so I figured that one is a trail freebie that entertains both of them! :)
This is such a cute video. Hope you guys have an awesome trip and hope you Film it!
@@sarahh1099 Thank you! I have a lot of fun doing pretty much anything with him :)
We've only done backcountry canoe camping with our kiddo (now 5), but entertainment will definitely come into play out there. It's great that you're able to take him with other kids. We haven't found any yet to go with, so we are all the entertainment. His pack is just his fun stuff. Obviously, too heavy for backpacking, but he carries things like a collapsible bucket (from Dollarama), and the poop trowel for digging, colouring books, etc. One interesting thing we found was one of those car play mats (looks like a little city. Don't know how else to describe). It's made of tarp material, so we can lay it down, and he plays with a couple hot wheels cars on it, or uses it for just chilling on. Since you're $$ conscious, Decathlon makes a good kids backpack thst would be a great next step for him in the next year or 2. It's a 28 L Quechua MH500. They sometimes also have some great deals on kids hiking clothes. I don't like their actual camping gear, but this kids stuff is great! Check it out! Can't wait to see your adventures with the little man! 😊
@jennymckinnon7054 Decathlon is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to shop. My new puffy, and down winter jacket are from them, as are mine and the boys trail pants. Just ordered his new winter coat from them too. I havent had a chance to check out any of their backpacks or gear yet, but hoping to next time I make it to Calgary. That car mat is an awesome idea, I will definitely be looking into something like that! I never even thought about a couple hotwheels cars, genius! And the trowel, he will definitely love digging around with that!
I absolutely love hiking with my kids. We just recently finished a grueling hike to 7000 feet this past week in southern alberta. It's great to see you out with your son he is so lucky. We are so lucky here in Canada, especially here in Alberta, the greatest place on earth with the greatest people. Cheers
@@evanhammond7305 A lot of folks saying hes a lucky kid, but in reality I'm the lucky one.
@@MattyOutdoors well that's a given. We all have great kids. But not all kids have great dads
@evanhammond7305 Dont know if I'd call myself a great dad.. I'm just trying to give my boy the freedom to explore the best way I know how.
Outstanding video. Your supporting cast are worthy of an Oscar.
@@GarryCollins-ec8yo I agree, they're the best!
Dad mode activate! So cool! As I've gotten into backpacking I've started taking my teenagers with me. They love it!
@@theaknights Hoping to start him young, and just let him wander and explore!
I love this! I was hiking this weekend and saw a bunch of small kids out and was thinking about you guys…hope the trip is amazing, and I’m still trynna swing it. 😀
@@BACKPACKERish by trying, you mean we'll see you there ;)
Oh Maddox is so cute 🥰 And he is so big already! I remember your videos where you were awaiting him like it was yesterday. Hopefully you two can make it out on the trip very soon.
Every time I look at him it feels like hes bigger and bigger.. Its mind boggling that he's 3 already! If everything works out, it should be very soon we're out on trail
2:53 - I felt that sigh in my soul. I have a wild German shepherd and 4 year old and can totally relate 😂
The 2 of them crack me up so much! Its been one of the most special things, seeing my dog become his dog.
Hope you enjoy our gear load out! Unfortunately, we had some issues the morning of, and weren't able to make it for the trip. We'll go over all of this in a coming video, but already have plans for our next attempt.
I hope you make a video about this trip?!? I’m taking my 4 year old son out as well for an overnighter and I’ll be making a video out of it. Super cool load out info thanks Matty!
When we make it out for our trip, we will be. We ran into a few snags the morning of, and will explain that in a coming video
The Dad mode loadout lol . What's the weights? Base and total.
@shawnr6117 I didn't bother looking at weights. His is maybe 2.5lbs, mines definitely sitting around 40-45 fully loaded.
I’m taking my son on his first this year also. Thanks Matty!!!
@@Fizzyfuzzybignbuzzy that's awesome! We've had a lot of fun planning and prepping for our trip!
Sure hope that little guy has his oilers hat to wear while he is in trail just like dad!
He definitely does have an Oilers hat!
I've had these for a year. There's a lot of flex in them which means you don't get the push off that you should. I much prefer the Cascade "carbon" poles which are lighter and about the same price though pack larger. I did get these for river wading when fly fishing and they are great for that, just not great for hiking.
mine dont have any flex to them, weird.
@@MattyOutdoors Most of the flex is at the top joint with the button, there's almost 1mm of gap there. Maybe a QC issue.
@soobz i just checked mine, theres no play at all at the joint with the button, its very tight
@@MattyOutdoors Chinese QC strikes again! I did buy mine more than a year after yours, they might have changed manufacturing method/factory, who knows. Both of mine have the same play/flex.
Only 36$ today! That's a steal
smokin deal!
How does the Vario do when used as a mid layer under a Nova Pro for winter camping?
@horsedog713 ive used it as a midlayer, and like it a lot. no clue how it performs with the nova pro as I don't have one
Exciting to get the little guy out on his first trip. Another good beginner hammock set up is the Hammock Gear Wanderlust kit. It comes with a 11’ hammock with bug net,11’ tarp, tree straps, stakes, all the lines attached for $250 US. All you need to do yourself is seal the ridge seam on the tarp, and the sealant comes with the kit. It’s pretty much ready to use as it arrives. Not sure if the cost is still reasonable shipped to Canada, though
The excitement is an understatement, its all he talks about lol! I looked into the wanderlust kits, and they are really nice. Id honestly say the hammocks are comparable in quality and comfort. Im pretty sure the onewind tarps are cheap too, and they are really nice, my good friend Nathan uses one
Man it’s gunna be good to get out soon and bring the kids out too.
Maddox is so excited. Its pretty much all he talks about. Hes counting down his big sleeps.
Those pants are gonna be great! And he’s gotta be stoked!
He wears them all the time, loves em! And the stoke level is pretty high. Asks me every morning "is today hiking dad?"
My buddy Rainy and I just came back from Coral Lake Tuesday July 09 2024. Water levels were nearly double which added to the excitement. We camped in all the same campsites in the same order as you guys, lol (except for at the lake we were on the other side). Spoke with the outfitters at their camp. They talked about a nuisance grizzly they had been dealing with. First time in over 55 years of business that they have had a bear going after their tents. Said they saw it at the "Halfway" camp site (the one with the benches) less than 24 hours earlier. About 60-90 mins after leaving their camp and hearing about the bear going after their tents we took a different branch in the trail and found a hunting camp that was well stocked. A bear ravaged that site. Nothing was left unturned, the bear went after everything, chain oil canister for the chainsaw, the chainsaw, stoves, first aid kit, playing cards, water containers, their bins with coffee, spices, Mr. Noodles, etc.. all gone through and eaten. All bins and containers were torn apart. At the Halfway house we saw prints from an adult and at least one cub in the area. So, be aware, there is at least one grizzly that has gotten food rewards for ransacking camps out there!
@therovingbrickie that's definitely not the first time bears have gone after their camps, cuz we've seen evidence of it every year. And after seeing the state they leave rheir camps I'm not surprised at all.
I hike in shorts as I find legs dry a lot quicker than long pants. Once dry at camp, I put on long thermal pants.
Depends on what kind of pants. I usually wear tights, and find they dry extremely quickly, and help maintain warmth, as well as protect my legs and shins from getting shredded by thorns, willows, etc while hiking along.. I don't always venture out on the most well established routes, so a bit of protection for the legs is always nice.
@MattyOutdoors my shorts are actually bathers from K'Mart. I'm hiking a 200 klm stretch on the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia through forests, dunes, and coastal heath, Walpole to Albany. There are 3 sided shelters about 20klm s apart. We're spoilt on this track. There are some rough, low-lying sections of scrub with prickles, but they keep my legs warm. It's winter here, and I'll be expecting 3°Centigrade mornings, maximums around 18°C.
Are you still using the flextail repel? Are the refills turning it into an expensive gadget?
I haven't had to use it much, as the bugs really havent been too bad up here. Ive still got most of the ones it came with
@@MattyOutdoors Thanks for replying. Glad the mosquitoes are not bad!
Gas burners don't make sense to me 😅 xboil is my go to cookset 🤔
cant always use twig stoves though.. when theres firebans, or woodfire restrictions, gas burners is all you can use.
why do so many morons think saying "solo" is a big deal, its NOT its all i do
Nothing new under the Sun. 🤛
What about under the moon?
It's OK to bash alltrails if you have a better alternative but nothing is worse than alltrails....
@ddff5242 id argue, carrying nothing is better then alltrails, considering the amount of people getting lost due to blindly following gps tracks off the app. it's gotten so bad, our provoncial parks put out warnings about alltrails getting people lost.
@MattyOutdoors yeah. Going to strongly disagree with that. You can always track back to the beginning even if the trail is bad. Granted, I live in USA, but I have had zero issues with the accuracy.
@ddff5242 when youre scrambling in the mountains, its alot easier said then done to just go back to the start sometimes
@MattyOutdoors don't doubt that but if you had nothing it would be worse.
@ddff5242 if people didnt have the app, they wouldnt end up on the trail getting lost in the first place. the problem is, alltrails is all user generated information. with the trails and terrain we have up here, people end up in some very very very sketchy, dangerous situations because they blindly follow whats on an app
That pump sack was an ExPed original over a decade ago. Now people are seeing it and going WOW.
Ok
Awesome review. Seems like a real nice system
they are really nice. i wont use anything else when ground sleeping now
I've been watching you for years now. How can we help increase your subs? You're one of the best gear reviewers on the CZcamss!
I appreciate that, and if I had an answer to that, I'd tell ya. I just don't think its in the cards for me, and that's alright.
@@MattyOutdoors Do you have like Instagram and Facebook and stuff? Can we share your channel link to other sites? Have you considered doing collabs? I just want to get your info out there. You've informed some serious gear decisions for me and I'd love for others to have that opportunity. You're a gem.
Overcome your fear solo EASY carry a magnum revolver and a 8" blade survival knife. Also I always carry a proximity alarm(Ebay < $15) and solar garden light with motion sensor as well as a bright flashlight, first aid kit and mini cherry bomb firework. When I hear a noise I light one and throw it out of my tent if the bang does not scare whatever is outside then it is magnum time.
sounds like youre fostering that fear instead of overcoming it. thankfully, i live in a country where people arent throwing fireworks and shooting guns at every noise in the woods.
There are brands of ramen from South Asia meant to be crushed up raw with seasoning as a snack, you should try them 😊
will have to look into that!
I like using gallon freezer Ziploc bags to organize my gear and waterproof them. The gallon freezer Ziploc bag weighs 0.31oz.
I did this for years, and it works great! Durability is kind of a small issue, eventually they pop holes, and the little sealing portion stops working. Little by little, I've upgraded most of my waterproofing bags to dyneema. That may not be for everyone, but I love the printed dyneema bags. Makes organization really nice. And having a poop emoji on my poop kit makes me smile everytime I pull it from my pack.
For summer hiking, it’s okay not to bring a stove. As long as you’re comfortable with it, you can have all your meals be cold prepped meals and snacks.
not ok at all, cold soaking is gross
I wonder what the weight of that 6 day food load is.
about 9lbs
I’m about to receive a Warrior Edge (second hand); are you still using yours after all these years? Holding up well?
I use it from time to time, but admittedly not overly often, as i have quite a few other hammocks now
As an Oilers Fan can you suggest a good dog friendly back country hike in Jasper, I'm thinking 3-4 days in the next 10 days. My dog is similar to yours. Thanks in advance.
im not sure what the snowpack is like in Jasper right now, and with bookings opening in January, it may be hard to find anything available with only 10 days notice
Thank you for responding so quickly, looking forward to your next adventure.
