During the heat of summer, I often find myself wondering if all the effort of weeding, watering and killing pests is worth it. The garden really does consume a lot of time and energy. But once we sit down and eat the bounty that comes from the garden, I realize that the effort is definitely worth it. Very encouraging everything that you said about Kioti and the grappler as I just bought a NS 6010 HST with the KG 4072 grappler, the cost was staggering yet less than JD or Kubota. This is my 3rd (and last) tractor the others had shuttle shifts and were smaller and at age 75 with newly acquired 57 acres of heavy forest lands here in the Adirondacks my remaining life will be spent on it cutting ATV trails and harvesting for my saw mill so the 6010 is as big as I could go and navigate thru the forest. The decision was not easy in these economic uncertain times but the fact that the dealer is only 30 minutes away and life is too short not to do what you enjoy most especially at my age (yea that was my selling point to my frugal wife).

    Dogs are carnivores. (So are humans!). We both can tolerate carbohydrate (sugar) but won't thrive. At some point, meat eating animals that consume sugar will suffer in one way or another. It may be weight (fat) gain (that may lead to diabetes-insulin resistance), joint pain, arthritis, CVD/heart disease, cancer, altzheimers etc etc. Sugar is the poison. All carbohydrate (plants) break down into some for of sugar (eg glucose) and are toxic for carnivores. Pet and human food is made with cheap, unhealthy carbs/fillers to maximize profits. They tell you it's healthy even though they're made with loads of sugar and seed oils. Illness & disease has tripled in humans since the 1970's when the food pyramid became official policy. Our pets are now suffering the exact same diseases as humans. It's not genetics; that's an excuse to distract from the true cause. It's mostly nutrition (and environmental toxins that get into our bodies (including pharma drugs!!). Carnivores need the nutrition exactly as it comes from fatty red meat. Nothing more. Anything else will have a negative health affect. Experiment for yourself; feed your dogs raw (fatty) ground beef and any other meat. Just make sure they get the fat. They will thrive. They will have virtually no gas, defecate much less and not suffer pain and disease. If they don't thrive, go back to feeding them plants. Plant material does not break down well in a carnivore digestive system. Ruminant animals can digest the sugars (especially cellulose-fiber) and benefit from the small amount of nutrition in plant material. Cows must chew their cud to fully digest plants and they spend a large part of their day/life eating (grazing) to get the necessary nutrition. Humans have been turned into grazers; eating 5 or 6 times per day with more of the recommended nutrition coming from plants (carbohydrate/sugar and oxidized unsaturated fats (like veggie oils)). That's why we have smelly farts (fermenting fiber in our colon creating methane), bloating, multiple stools per day, stomach issues/pain and an increase in all illness and disease. Eat fatty meat and this all improves or resolves. Love the new Kioti tractor (and the property)!

      I started using a lot of mulch last year and I've found that it has significantly decreased my pest pressure in the long run- over time predatory insects tend to move in and take care of the pest insects for you since the mulch gives them a good place to hide/hunt. I live in Texas so your results may vary but mulch has almost totally suppressed my garden weeds with no notable drawbacks, and massively increased the amount of earthworms & organic matter in my soil.

Regarding the drying immediately, I do know that even stainless steel will rust, albeit slowly. The thin edges of razors, for example, get dull mainly because of the rust that can develop on those razor-thin edges. Maybe the manufacturer is concerned about the cutting edges of the blade, or the threads slowly oxidizing. (?)

    Its really the best bang for your buck splitter out there. It holds a good amount of fluid,which helps keep the fluid cooler with prolonged use and increases its life. The hydraulic fluid filter is also a great addition,again e tending the life of that fluid. The 4 way splitting head for this model just drops down overtop of the head thats already there and can easily be taken off or added back on depending on your needs. The tray is certainly a worthwhile investment and will help ease your work some. I like that it has a Kohler engine because as you need maintenance parts and such theyre easier to find than if you had a chinese motor. I think you e chosen well and will get alot of use from this splitter. Congradulations on your purchase, stay safe and warm

    I have been using a 22-ton Brave log splitter with a 5 hp Honda the past 18 years or so. I don't use a tray, nor would I want one. The pieces don't split over the engine. So I don't know what that person is referring to? I've never had a piece hit the engine. I just did a couple hours of splitting today, & I don't let the pieces drop on the ground. I back my Kawasaki Mule (or a trailer or wheelbarrow would work) to the side opposite of the control lever. When I split a large chuck, I flip the half away from me up on the corner of my Mule box. I finish the half chunk that is near me first. Each piece is thrown into the box. After the first half is split into smaller pieces, I grab the other half & do likewise. I wouldn't want a tray or shelf. It would be in the way. Once my Mule or trailer is full, I back it to the stacking spot. It eliminates having to pick up all those smaller pieces again. Sometimes, I take the log splitter into the woods (where the cut up trees are), & I do likewise. The wood I haul home is split & ready to be stacked. I own 72 acres of wood, & I also take advantage of burning some firewood each winter. You don't really need a tray. Set a wheelbarrow or something else like that next to you while splitting. Don't let any unfinished chunks hit the ground. Flip half in the wheelbarrow while you finish splitting the other half. Sometimes, I just create a place/table to stack an unfinished chuck by stacking a couple large chunks on top of each other near the end of my splitter. Personally, I like using my Mule, but the tailgate of a pickup truck would work, too.

    Did the ice/gel pack come with the grinder? Thank you for the video. It was very informative

    Hi thank you so much for this video! It was really helpful while I was setting this up. I got mine for the same reasons y'all did. Lucky dogs!

    Why don’t you use the insta pot to cook everything? I do it works great

    That is not a pitchfork. It is a potato fork or graip. A pitchfork is a much longer fork with fewer, narrower, sharper tines, habitually used for working with haystacks or attacking vampires and other threatening beings at night and carrying lit torches.

      I think you are right but I've always called it a pitch fork and its habit. I think people get the idea.

      I'm trying to get better at the video angles and shots. As you can see, sometimes its a work in progress! :-)

    Interesting on the distribution, think that might just come from our line of work where you struggle to monitor and manage resources all day. It does look very packed in compared to my grandparents. Think we used a foot or so between each plant. Is that Rhein running around?

    • @midlifeharvest
      @midlifeharvest Před rokem

      Yep, that's Rhein and Zed. I definitely need to space them further apart in the future. They still grow fine when super packed in but they are a pain to harvest.

    We need to plan a cross country trip to visit you guys - those potato bugs are giving me chills, reminds me of crawling through my grandparents farm in Poland with a jar and collecting them. Is there a reason you don't plan the tomatoes in a greenhouse or cover them? For some reason in PL they all do that just for tomato.

      We are in the planning stages of putting the tomatoes in a hoop house (a small greenhouse). In our back yard we have a spring that runs all year long and we are hoping to capture that water and use it for drip irrigation. That's probably a project for next year or the year after though.
