The Antikythera Mechanism 2024
zhlédnutí 161Před 4 měsíci
In 1901 sponge divers off the coast of the island of Antikythera, Greece discovered a Roman shipwreck. This was surely a high-status transport that had sunk in the second century BC. In addition to many marble sculptures and artifacts the divers spotted a greenish hunk of coral encrusted bronze. At the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the lump broke apart, revealing bronze precision ge...
Frankenstein automata
zhlédnutí 59Před 4 měsíci
I made this piece for an invitational show at a library. Each artist was assigned a book to create a piece about. I got Frankenstein. I started with a box that I picked up years ago and going through my studio, I found appropriate parts and pieces that were all vintage. The two pieces of doll furniture were pulled from the trash next to my studio where the artist and curator Nancy Larrew put th...
Figurative work in the classroom
zhlédnutí 144Před 2 lety
I developed a project for my high school kids. First I provided them with the parts to make a “puppet” that they had to drill holes for and drive screws. Then the started wrapping and retaking fabric using wire to simulate the muscles. Also fixing the pose. The prompt was to express an emotion. The results were pretty good! The music I think was rights free. I am not monetizing it so hopefully ...

The Torus: 2021 CAS Sales Award The European Tokamak is a fusion reactor that uses a powerful electromagnet in the shape of a torus to essentially “bottle” a fusion reaction in a vacuum. This doughnut shaped super magnet creates a magnetic field so focused that it is capable of containing a plasma field hotter than the surface of the sun. The goal of fusion is to create unlimited energy by comb...
Interview about my work and a little philosophy 2022
zhlédnutí 247Před 2 lety
At the Ronald Silverman Gallery on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles I was interviewed about a body of kinetic work I had on display. This is the unedited version complete with the interviewers questions. The work presented is all made from typical household trash. Cardboard, tin cans, bottle caps, milk jugs, comet containers all are reinvented in my hands. I like to discover the secret lives...

Finishing out 2021 strong. A new cardboard automata that is more complicated than all the others. Using an oranges box as the basis I have a crankshaft driving the UFO and then a pinwheel gear. The other side of the pinwheel shaft drives a set of alternating cams lifting the small chicken. The lifter has a set of parallel spokes sticking out of it. The oscillation flips the large chicken back a...

It is said that any technology that is sufficiently advanced enough will be perceived as magic to someone unfamiliar with it. The history of magic, religion and science are closely intertwined. Stan Bennett 1980's movie
zhlédnutí 677Před 5 lety
Stan Bennett was an artist who lived in Ferndale, CA and was an early founder of the Kinetic Sculpture Race. In 1975 he wrote a book on the race: Crazy contraptions: A Light-Hearted Look at Ferndale's Kinetic Sculpture Race. He was trained in graphic arts and had a career that included writing and marketing but in 1968 he started making "Magic Marble Machines". Stan was not aware of anyone else...

My dentist office has a piece of Stan’s kinetic art in their waiting room. It’s currently not functioning, I suspect the electric motor has failed. I’ve offered to troubleshoot it for them and in my research came across your video. Do you know much about his work or the types of motors he used to power his “Magic Mable Machines”?
That’s a gracious offer on your part. While I’m not sure what kind of motor he used exactly you should be able to look at the side of the motor and it may say. I am going to assume it is something like a 50rpm or less motor with probably a 6mm or 1/4” shaft. Something torquey. Possibly a stepper motor. In the grainy video I shot it seems there are two motors on the machine he had on the bench. He was old school and probably used a 110v ac motor but there are tons of good worm drive 12v motors out there. You may have to adapt something to the coupler. So best to first see what he had and then see if it can either be directly replaced (Amazon) or can you find something with the same shaft size and bolt configuration (rpm too). Good luck and let me know how it works out.
When I shoot an interview it is very impromptu. In that moment, as I recall it was the best light in her dark studio. I also knew I was shooting B roll and I was going to overlay it so the focus would be on the magical work. I’m sorry that’s what you focused on. But as you can see I get one take. My priority in framing is to get the full face to stay in frame, not look at the screen, 2:00 but at their eyes (I’m looking directly next to or just above the camera) and thinking on the fly of cogent, pertinent questions that I think will lead to an interesting insight. Yes, if her head wasn’t moving the rope it would have been less distracting but I’m sure she moved back a little as I started filming because I have the camera in very close to capture the best audio. So I’m sorry your OCD got the best of you here but this is what I got. Before that I had just visited and interviewed Keith Newstead (tried using a set of corded headphones to get the audio and didn’t notice the buzz until afterwards) and after that I shot Carlos Zapata and later in the day Paul Spooner. I was just fortunate to have had such a full day of being in the presence of these incredible makers and to be considered as a peer.
why oh why did you video her infront of the coil of rope which is hanging from the ceiling ?? So irritating and DISTRACTING watching it move around as she talks. . . . POV Aaron.
This is really remarkable, for a 2d wire sculpture it captures a great deal.

I bet this guy knows about linotypes.
Seeking information about R. Bruce Salinger. Is he still alaive? Does he still make art? I can not find ANYTHING about him on line. Please reply. Thank you. Steven P. Williams
I don't know him. I found an email on his messed up website. inquiry@imachinationlabs.com or contact one of the people he lists... www.imachinationlabs.com/m/links.shtml

I love your work! That endless sausage maker, so strange! 😁
Maravilloso!!!!
Brilliant. I'll bet you Singer never saw their treddle becoming a scroll saw. Paul should consider releasing his sketchbooks, I'm pretty sure they'd spark an idea in someone's head. We need more like him.
I worked in the DT dept in a school in Leytonstone and we would set the year 10 students a mechanical toy project. Paul Spooners work was a source of inspiration for the students when designing their toys. Some of the resulting pieces were amazing. Great fun! This guy is a legend.
Build a house 👍
This is fantastic, this man has a brilliant mind. 💕
Lovely ☺️
The robot is the best.
That last one is hilarious
Imagine him collaborating with Tim Hunkin?
He and Tim are old friends. They had a tv show together. It was either Machinations or The Secret Life of Machines?
I'm so glad you were able to be an artist with your life❤
Thank you Sandi. I'm not sure if you mean me or Paul. But either way I am honored to have had a long career and along the way have become friends with a group of similarly minded individuals who's work I love to celebrate because I personally feel connected to it. My interviews are all over the place based on what maybe I just spoke with the artist about prior to turning on the camera, to deep in the weeds analysis of a particular process to the often asked question, "how do you make a living". Thanks and check out some of my other interviews on this platform as well as Vimeo. vimeo.com/showcase/3814665
@@urbanobjects I was drawn to your channel because of Paul. He is wonderful and you did a great job interviewing him. I look forward to more of your videos and the future. And I am super glad that you have been able to live your best creative life!💜💚🧡

You're not going to explain any of the jokes? The only one that is explained is the couple breaking up on the bench, and then he doesn't even exhibit the movement of anything but the girl standing up. Great art, crappy documentary.
That robot is hilarious
Back in the mid 90's, I was working at the Humboldt Creamery as a certified TIG welder in Fernbridge CA, around 8 miles from Ferndale CA. This was a town I really liked, and Stan was an artist who had an exceptional mind for creating the unusual, something a person doesn't see everyday. Wish I would have taken more time at his shop.
Un artista impresionante este tipo
his sketchbook is amazing, i'd definitely buy a replica of that
What is the point?
It depends on the viewer. If you’ve never worked with wire but wants to then this video is for you. If you don’t care…move along.
Just Magical❤❤❤
Fantastic!!!
I bought a driftwood heart slightly bigger than yours ..in wales , uk. It was great until the glue ( gun) ...started to melt. Now i have a pile of wood ...and a heart to reassemble. It felt apart from the damp winter and hot summer . I love them , but will make sure they are better made . Yours looks wonderful and look more secure with nails. 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚👍👍👍

Very cool.
Amazing..lol. I love it .. Though the movement is wrong ... We land on heel first , then toes . This looks so much like a " moonwalk" ... 😃👍
‘I think that I have a very short attention-span...’ - says the man who makes these incredibly intricately calibrated wonders!
"Why do you make these jokes?" Paul: "Because I am completely unsuited to make anything else." The line makes me smile. Paul is so witty and funny. It would be lovely and palatable to see his crafts to be adapted into illustration books or slice-of-life short film.
The shaking robot is a little dark.
Asking him about marketing was pretty funny. Obviously this man isn't even remotely interested in getting rich , look at his surroundings and the remark about the chairs. Love this guy , just doing his thing and keeping it 'real' .
