    Deluge + model D + Hydrasynth is the perfect setup for my needs. I just adore the deluge, so easy to transfer daw knowledge to it. You can dig into the endless ableton tutorial production tips and apply their concept to the deluge most of the time.

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 Před 10 hodinami

      Nice! I’ve almost pulled the trigger on the model D a few times. Sound so so good! The Deluge is such a perfect gateway for anyone coming from ableton or any DAW really. I love that it’s simple im and intuitive on the surface so you can jump right in, but incredibly deep if you wanna go down the rabbit hole! Cheers!

    Very cool setup! I might need to make a video about mine as well. I was in the box, stopped making music because I kept getting sidetracked on the computer and had screen fatigue, then got a Deluge and Virus Ti2 (16 parts of multitimbrality = 16 discrete synths in one), was gifted a Microfreak , got a digital mixer, a Zoom CDR multistomp and TR-8, and am now slowly introducing the DAW back in for FX and recording/arranging.

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 Před 22 hodinami

      Dude I feel you. I don’t think I even realized how much I was feeling that distraction and just dislocation working on my computer. I do like using my DAW for FX on some things. Having a hybrid mixer that allows for that is awesome. And def still use the daw for final mix and master- although I quite like arranging on the deluge too. Heard a lot of great things about the virus. Would love to see how you have it set up! And the micro freak makes some amazing sounds! Cheers man!

    If you can handle 8 inputs (excluding USB ones) the Zoom R20 is a nice compact option too. And an interesting alternative to the Zoia are the Mod Dwarf/Mod Duos (although you do need a computer (web browser) to edit the patches).

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 Před 5 dny

      @@alexandermontagnet3361ahh the deluge! LOVE the deluge. Yes. It’s my primary drum machine. You can write much longer sequences with more parts then the DFAM. It’s also a sampler, so a lot of times I’ll make sounds on the DFAM and sample it into a custom kit on the deluge to better sequence. But mostly I’ll use the deluge for the main drum patterns and then supplement them with percussive patterns and textures on the DFAM. The deluge is almost worth its weight in gold just as a sequencer. I use it to sequence the Mother often. It also has a pretty great synth engine, supports multisamples, and has a great song view and arranger. Between the deluge and the sound studio, you’d have a very complete DAWless set up with just that.

    Thanks for making a video on the DFAM. 👌The DFAM is very underrated. In reality it has 2 sequencers and they can be played to crazy effect. We use 2 DFAMs with the Labyrinth and we've made some very interesting sounds.

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 Před 18 dny

      Totally agree! I do sometimes wish it had… more. Like more steps (maybe 16steps) and maybe a separate row of pitch/velocity so you can separate the voices better.. but then of course it’s veering into drum machine territory which might take away from its unique character. Sounds like 2 is what I really want… you figured it out! Jealous. But even more jealous of the Labyrinth! Really wanna play with one of those!

    • @dEadnAstyrEcords
      @dEadnAstyrEcords Před 18 dny

      @@oaklandghosts0510 That's where the Lab comes in.😀 Well, we find that between modulations and the oscillators. You can play the pitch and velocity like a keyboard. Also, slight turns can produce incredible variations when circumstances are right. There's also a way to get feedback out of the DFAM. Yeah, 2xDFAMs and a Lab is definitely the way to go, and it can go deep. We really believe few people dig into what a DFAM, or any synth, for that matter, as much as they could. We've even gotten jazz and blues out of Moog's, very experimental. Also, we just uploaded a piece that takes them to an interesting place sonically. This is the other thing most don't think about with a Moog system (mother). With ours, we have 13 oscillators to play with while things are going. Many people don't do this, because you can lose your way, and the pitch can throw you off and ruin the moment. But what is playing a guitar? Moog's are instruments, and we are literally, constantly turning knobs. Also, there are 5 filters, and the Labs folder with U mixer too, the folder/filter mixer. The possibilities are endless. Honestly, a Moog system provides more than enough analog for anyone. All we need is the Spectravox. 😀 Keeping it simple though, is the key, because you learn so much more by learning one system really well. In an analog subtract world, Moog is good enough to end the search for more analog gear for us. And digital synthesis/FM can all be done on a computer more effectively, and most importantly, cheaper, and you don't sacrifice quality with the right setup. We're not stuck on a single format. Music is sound, and anything that makes it is welcome. 🖖

    How do you find inspiration to create something on the deluge specifically, and/or where do you begin in the process of building something on the deluge? I ask because I finally just got a Deluge myself after hearing about the thing for years and having multiple friends swear by it, but I’m personally struggling to find inspiration on it. If I hear something I want to sample, I feel like pulling out my sp 404 or even just Koala on my phone. When I feel like building with synths, I’m often a little disappointed with the sounds in the Deluge. I am not trying to complain about this amazing device, and I am not going to sell it like I often do with other gear that I don’t vibe with right away. I want this thing to be my “go to” like so many others. I admit that I still have so much to learn on the deluge, I’m still a deluge newbie, but I’m even getting bored trying to learn about it because I just want to create, so I end up just putting it away and pulling out another device that I’m more fluent in using. I know people will just say to bite the bullet (or whatever that saying is) and don’t put it away, just keep using it, and I know…… but I guess I’m just looking for any advice that you or anyone else here might have that could potentially help me. Like I said, I’m keeping it and I. Will eventually love it, I know it, I see way too much potential in this device to just give up on it so soon. Last thing I’ll say which might help, I’ve always been a Maschine, SP404, pad-beating producer. I struggled with sequencers altogether for sooo long, I never cared to even touch one until I got the Torso T1. Noe I’m opening up a lot more to sequencers, but I’m wondering if some of my resistance to the deluge is just some old residual sequencer dislike that I’m still subconsciously holding onto. Maybe I just need advice on how to feel inspired by sequencing in whole. I don’t know! I’m just tired of feeling frustrated and uninspired. Typing this comment and seeking help has actually made me feel a little better all in itself lol. Anyway, thanks for the video.

      Great question! For me, I’m coming from a more traditional band/studio background, so the workflow on the deluge feels very natural to me in that it’s very similar to a DAW/piano roll type interface that I was already used to. The thing I was struggling with in my DAW was too many options when staring at a blank screen. Will I record something fresh? Will I endlessly scroll my sample Library? Will I give up and endlessly scroll social media because it’s a tab away? The deluge is intended only to make music, and gets me off the screen and into the moment. A big thing for me was it really opened me up to the world of synthesis. I’m still learning my way around synths, but the deluge and its immediacy made it more accessible to me. Admittedly, the deluge is a bit complicated (with no screen) and it can take some time to learn your way around. And with the endless innovation of the community devs that list never ends… one thing I did from the start was watch RSKT video manual series. Discovering new (to me) or how to use certain features inevitably led to something inspiring I would chase down. When I was first learning my way around the deluge I would often center a session around learning a new feature and seeing how I could integrate it into my workflow. Maybe that meant making a song centered around creating all my own synths and kits from scratch. Or focusing on building a track entirely around the Deluges sampling features, etc. In this way I not only learned more about the deluge but also on which features mattered and inspired me most. I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling with inspiration as to me the deluge is itself an inspiration machine. More often then not, I don’t have a plan when I start up a session. Maybe I just find a loop I like and build on it. Maybe a particular synth sound peaks my interest and I chase it. Maybe a random press of keys in the sequencer turns out to be a really cool melody. Who knows! It sounds to me like you’re probably not suffering so much from lack or Inspiration as much as still struggling to see if a workflow on the deluge works for you. I think maybe you’re still holding on to how you could do things better or faster on gear you’re already familiar with. I’d encourage you to stick with it though! It’s an awesome piece of gear when you get your head around it! Maybe try to incorporate your other gear. The deluge plays nice with other gear. I have a bunch of songs from scratch videos in a playlist that kind of documents how I come up with stuff and what inspires me. Maybe give them a browse! Or my song sketch series. The earlier videos are all entirely made on the deluge. Best of luck and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! Cheers.

      time for you to learn how to program a synth, if you dont like the stock deluge sounds.... or buy some presets, the deluge boards of canada presets are really good.

      Ok - that helps (a 3rd way through) to conceptualise Song View as a scratch pad for themes and variations & details and then the Arranger as described where one moves these parts around on a canvas in a more linear Left to Right manner. Yay! I'm wondering if the fact I've never used a grid/cell format has put me off... 👌🏾

    Damn I thought you were going to do a blow by blow on the Deluge. I have this problem (being new to this form) of not being able to get beyond the loop stage; v frustrating.

      I do have a couple vids in my song from scratch playlist that are a little more ‘blow by blow’ style for arranging on the deluge (I’ll see if I can find some links) I was gonna (and may do) another but the truth is every song is pretty different. And they’re a lot of work cuz I spread out the arrangement process usually over a few days and it’s ALOT of listening back for the start to test things 😂

    Great advice. I think I get caught in loop stacking thinking I’m not sure I have enough parts. One of the things that has really helped is to start arranging the track even before I think I’m ready. Really shines a light on where the arrangement sounds empty and needs more attention. Thanks for the video.

      Good tip! Oftentimes starting an arrangement will reveal what you’re still missing. It’s interesting in the loop stacking stage, there’s no hard rule for when it’s enough but I can usually *feel when I’ve hit that point. But as you said, it’s very common that I realize I need that extra melody or lead after I’ve started arranging. Cheers!

    I tried to figure out how to randomize the hi hat velocity for ages and all i had to do was modulate the cutoff for the same effect.

    • @oaklandghosts0510
      @oaklandghosts0510 Před měsícem

      Haha. Yup. I used to manually vary velocity before. You could also modulate master volume (or oscillator level) with random (don’t know why you can’t do velocity), but I kinda like cutoff cuz it also changes the sound of the hit. It’s also nice to randomize pan just a little so it’s like the hit is on different parts of the hat.
