Britney Spears' cosmetic license with Elizabeth Arden is of particular interest from how it has managed longevity past the Britney Spears fandom. Once totally hooked to Britney as a celebrity, today at least the Fantasy product line has a fan base all of it's own and twenty-five perfumes to match. Of course Britney did still promote the perfume and had a large influence on the popularity over the years helping several of the fragrances become some of the best selling fragrances ever created

The Launch of Orebella by Bella Hadid
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 59KPĆed mÄsĂcem
Orabella was launched Bella Hadid as her new scent brand and seemingly the anticipation has been quite high. From sources like Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan and WWD all speculating on exactly what products will be available at launch, it has had such an interesting launch in regards to it's hype-building. I think in the future they may see the ordinary celebrity-line problems such as authenticity an...
The Life and Death of The Body Shop Founder Anita Roddick
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 4,8KPĆed mÄsĂcem
Anita Roddick is really a legend in retailing, from popularising concepts like anti-animal testing which is now commonplace in cosmetics, to cause marketing and even fair trade, she made an enormous impact on the industry before her shockingly untimely death in 2007. She may have made many mistakes along the way, something she happily admits, and may have negatively impacted the lives of some o...

The Launch of Cécred by Beyoncé
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 60KPĆed 3 mÄsĂci
Cécred is Beyoncé Knowles Carter's newest retail venture, this time into haircare. The brand will sell a wide range of hair care products from shampoo (which I assume to be their cash cow) to conditioners, oils and even a very strange looking shaking vessel. The Rise and Fall of Kat Von D & KVD Vegan Beauty
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 43KPĆed 3 mÄsĂci
Kat Von D was once the brand that inspired the beginning of Kendo, which would soon go on to build brands like Marc Jacobs Cosmetics and Fenty Beauty. However, after their brand saw a natural decline after 11 years, a decline partially spurred on by controversy and partially by lack of new and exciting products, Katherine von Drachenberg sold her shares, leaving the company to rebrand, which un...

SKKN by Kim is releasing makeup today, on the 26th of January and it's been long hoped for by fans of Kim Kardashian. The Rise and Potential Fall of Drunk Elephant
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 174KPĆed 5 mÄsĂci
Tiffany Masterson began Drunk Elephant by closely copying a product she was selling from Malaysian brand Wonderbar, taking an African myth of elephants becoming drunk after eating the marula fruit and reframing toxic ingredients as a problem in skincare. Taking all of these things in a melting pot, Masterson had the recipe needed for success as she combined effective skincare with a backstory t...
The Rise and Fall of KKW & SKKN by Kim Kardashian
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 90KPĆed 6 mÄsĂci
Kim Kardashian is famed for her many ventures, and KKW was one of a long string of cosmetics brands helmed by Kim. However, because of the heavy comparisons to Kylie and cannibalised market space, the brand failed, only to be sold to Coty a few years later for a very small amount of money (not the $200 million that many sources cite). However, that deal with Coty is far more than meets the eye ...
The Rise and Potential Fall of Rhode

Rhode Beauty is very new on the scene, only debuting last year in 2022 but already it has garnered itself a following for its minimalist packaging and moisturising products. The branding nor product, nor packaging is unique and there are a plethora of other like products on the market, so the question then is; is this a cash g...

Huda Beauty Is Not Made for You

Huda Beauty has not been in the news much lately, they stopped posting regularly on CZcams and have had a few scandals, causing many to believe the brand has fallen. The Mysterious Origin of Sephora
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 55KPĆed 10 mÄsĂci
No-one knows the full history of Sephora. Most claim Sephora saw beginnings from 1969 (or 1970 from some sources), yet, thats not 100% true. The store was up and running well before this under another parent company and was sold to Boots in 1970, who then changed the name to Sephora. It existed before this, under a different name, under a different parent company, so why so much effort to cover...
The Rise and Fall of Kylie Cosmetics

Kylie Cosmetics was once on the top of the world of beauty. But following some legal trouble and a failed rebranding, they seem to have lost the interest of their audience. I don't necessarily think this is the end of the company, and Im curious how long it will be before they do as KKW did with SKKN and do a total rebrand (which is imo what will happen, the IP is far too strong to give up. Why is all your videos labels as 'Potential Fall'
No, we don't want companies to get involved in political issues and preach to us. Go woke go broke. The cancel culture mob really destroy everything they touch. Never liked the Body Shop.
Can you review Jessica Simpson's empire
My wife used to buy body shop all the time in london in 03',The body butters were the best, especially the mango
I grew up getting great items from The Body Shop in the 90s. I loved their mango body butter and mango spray. Something happened in the 2010s that made them not smell the same. I still use their facial buffer but it's out of stock now on Amazon and The Body Shop's website doesn't work. I don't think it ever did. I now just ordered a facial buffer pad and loofah from a different company. Hope they are better. I also use a different company's lotion in a different scent that's pleasing. Their physical store left our local mall some years ago. I hadn't been to the mall for a long time so I don't know when they left. I was told rent went up and various stores left. Which was true.
Loved the Bodyshop in ViaXX Genova (Italy) and the one in Kalverstrazt Amsterdam; the bodyperfumes & creams were so good, delicious smell and the vibe felt good. And then it changed, became more expensive and mainstream somehow, the vibe was different.
I was never particularly attracted to The Body Shop, as I prefer a bit of glamour. I saw a TV interview with Anita Roddick where she was banging on about environment and helping people in third world countries and the like, and she declared âI cannot get excited about a face cream!â I thought it was so arrogant and very patronising towards her customers, especially people without much money to spend on themselves, who were perhaps very excited by the purchase of a face cream! I did, however, love Body Shop Under Eye Oil, which I used for years because it smelled of roses. Then they âimprovedâ it, so it was unperfumed, although actually it still had a smell - a rather unpleasant synthetic smell. So I never bought it again. There ended my association with The Body Shop.
The Body Shop>Bath and Body Works all day. Also Bath and Body is owned by VS which does animal testing đą.
Colourpop put the final nail in makeup geeks coffin
Ain't people still buy them. Wal-Mart should still be selling them. Not sure
My nose looks just like hers without makeup and always wanted to know what she uses to narrow it down like she does.
Because my employer forbids wearing cosmetics with âscentsâ because of colleague sensitivity, I didnât really shop at the Body ShopâŠand if I did go into a shop, the smells were so overwhelming..To this day I tend to stay away from any product that has strong scents.
Fantasy everything on the moon at this point like girl has fantasy in every colour and vibe
Fantasy will always be the best smelling perfume ever. I just wish it lasted longer on the skin.
I wouldn't touch Lush with a 10 foot pole. Awful company!!
Do people really WANT to look like a painted doll and act like a cretin? (Ps. I have no problem with a âboyâ wearing make-up, or with whatever sex a person wants to see themselves as; I just wonder why folks want to be so fake on a daily basis, when they look darn good naturally with maybe a touch of makeup bringing out oneâs best featuresâŠ)
I like how you explain things. This is a brilliant video. I'm gonna subscribe âșïž

My mother got me Curious as a birthday gift, and I was grown woman. I loved it. It smelled wonderful on me.
I see your mum has good taste
The Body Shop was never big un my country, I never knew about the back story and cause oriented business. When I started buying from them it was already middle 2000 and what I liked was that the scent of products was exactly what it was supposed to be: rose smelt of rose even afte rmany hours of using any product, unlike any other brand that leaves a strange artificial aftersmell ai dislike very much. That changed gradually, scents were taken off production and replaced with similar ones with the said aftersmell like any other big brand.
It wouldâve been really interesting to see if you could add your own smells still, I mean it wouldâve helped enormously on cost, but also wouldâve been perfect for people like yourself who enjoyed choosing the fragrance
On completing the video I think the activism was her personal mission that you canât sell at all. The sale to LâOrĂ©al was never gonna work. She really tried đ
I agree, itâs hard to make a corporation understand personal goal, itâs even harder to make them actualise it
I love the body shop in South Africa, this is sadđ©đ©
Is it still thriving there? I know in Asia and in Australia itâs actually doing not bad.
They had a massive sale last I checked,I will actually check if they are up and running đ
I'm sure it was extremely difficult for her to see her company sell out as it became more profitable, so hard she stayed until she sold it for 1 billion. I too would like to dry my tears on 1000 dollar bills.
Did you watch my biography though? She died so shortly after the sale, really sad imo

This was really comprehensive and I was really excited to see Jon Entine's work as although The Body Shop wasn't perfect, and shouldn't have been seen as such; its marketing didn't make that clear and the cult of personality around Anita Roddick limited any effective change that could have been taken up once the allegations came to light over the business' ethical downfalls. The thing is Anita could have not grown. She could have kept the company smaller, but that is counter to capitalism. And I think she meant well, she had a real punch in the gut for the cosmetic business, but her naivety and entrepreneurial spirit should have been tempered with rationality and long-term planning. I know there was a lot to cover, but for me the biggest scandal for The Body Shop was the franchising issues and the lawsuits that came up from that. Anita Roddick is a fascinating woman, and was very influential to the cosmetics business. But at its heart, The Body Shop was her making money. That's not a bad thing. But she believed her own PR, and that led to the beginning of the end.
So glad to hear that you enjoyed the video so much, yeah you understand the problem that I had in that there was so much history to go over and obviously they take longer to make the longer they are. But Iâm glad you found it sufficiently comprehensive, I really did try. I agree that Jon Entineâs work is incredible marketing, and I also agree that Anita really just believed so wholeheartedly her own Marketing that it was hard for her to see the wood for the trees. I think she did a wonderful job with what she had, and considering there was no similar business prior to this I think she did a great job of not being tainted by riches.
What about looking at the Liz Earle brand?
Not a bad idea, but next Iâm trying to do lush đ©”
I did my capstone degree project on the Body Shop. The organisation was really not that clean and green: maybe better compared to major retail brands, but certainly not squeaky-clean. And while the Body Shop products were not tested on animals, many of the bulk ingredients that they purchased in were animal-tested.
What year was it that you researched this? I feel like because its become so much more important in recent years, access would have improved from what wouldve been available to Anita
@@underskinYT WAY back in 1996! I found the documentary mentioned, and also managed to get some of the financial reports (which were surprisingly opaque).
Something I've wanted to learn more about ever since reading about the company in Peter Lynch's Beating The Street. Extremely interesting.
Iâm so glad you liked it
selling it off to lauder was the ultimate betrayal i guess......sigh
At least it gave Anita some peace of mind in the last few years of her life
Iâve used The Body Shop products for 30 years; at 74 my skin looks 20 years younger. Iâm devastated to learn my favorite products will no longer be available. And the prices, compared to Origins, are low. Thanks for posting this. đą
Iâm so glad you liked it, Iâm sorry that your favourite products are maybe going away

A really nice summary of the body shop.
Thank you đ„°
They still doing pretty well here in Australia. Another case of, "is it really falling though?".
Its still doing okay in Asia as well actually, it makes me think theyll refocus onto that area as they dont have the history of the body shop to contend with. Its not really a case of *if* its fallen/ing, but how they can get back up. Always possible, often hard
She has a special gift to sell anything she touches. It has made her life a nightmare too đ„ș
I mean, she said it best, we wanted more and she gave us more
I worked for this company's first store in the US, 8th street and Broadway. I started when they first launched and was there for 4 years, it changed so much in that short period of time. They became greedy and what I knew and was introduced to as to what it became was a failure
Yeah, it became corporate
I've loved the brand since the 90's. There were still two stores left in my area as of last month, I will check to see of they're still open and buy what I can. RIP to Mrs Roddick, she was a phenomenal woman.
What are you going to get?
@@underskinYT I love the Moringa line. It smells so wonderful, especially the body cream. Thanks for another great research piece, by the way! đž
Fantastic video and analysis as always! As a side note, I find it a bit disingenuous that Roddick and the Body Shop seems to downplay criticism of their company by saying that theyâre being held to an unfairly high standard, that they were being compared to âperfectionâ - like, no one expects a company to make the perfect decisions 100% of the time, thatâs obviously unrealistic. But the allegations against the company in the Vanity Fair article go beyond mere imperfection and reads as being exceedingly scammy. Lying about the provenance of ingredients, unequal treatment and pay of farmers and suppliers, accusations of plagiarism, lying about the origins of the company to market themselves more effectively, just lots of lying in general - and the fact that Roddick seems to be either blithely unaware of or totally unwilling to engage with any of the criticisms against her and the company - as shown by her inability to admit to any poor decision or mistake she may have made - itâs just very revealing, and unfortunately for her the picture painted by her autobiography/autobiographies and interviews isnât particularly pretty.
I actually think she was right about being held to a high standard. I understand that it is the bed that she made for herself though, when you say that you are better than everyone else, everyone expects you to be. Even if that means that theyâre expectation is higher than what was currently possible. That said, I very much agree about the article exposing far worse than that. That really is straight up lying as opposed to trying to do the best and not achieving it. Do I think the article wouldâve been written if she didnât make such a hurrah about being as good as she is? No. but, the fact is that was a bed that she made herself. Best case scenario, I think maybe the whole concept just got away with her and it was too difficult to scale truly

Amazing amazing amazing video!!! I've always been curious (pun intended đ€Ł) about how the conservatorship affected her cosmetics line and how much money it made vs what she actually got. Super upsetting to hear how she was used as the face of the brand but most likely didn't even get that much money from it. Her fragrances are great though, I've tried Fantasy, Midnight Fantasy, and Curious and they're all incredible! Fantasy is literally the most-complimented perfume I've ever worn, and I wear TONS of perfumes lol. I definitely wanna get more of them, the Jungle Fantasy one looks really good!
Fragrancenerd on instagram has a few videos on Fantasy and it blew me away to hear him discuss the different levels of it, I was so impressed so much thought and development went into it, no wonder it has such a cult following
