    If you are not in good shape, if you are not motivated, do not attempt this hike. Seems every time I go, some one who should not be there is holding everybody else up. Physically unable to do an obstacle or scramble, scared of heights, or just gassed out looking like they're about to have a heart attack. If you're not sure, take the fire road up, not the ridge trail.

    Thanks for the review! It helped me decide to buy it. I've taken it on two shake-down walks of 4 and 6 miles, with about 20 pounds of stuff in it, and I like it so far. Going to do the first seven sections of the Lone Star Trail next week to make sure I want to use it in the mountains this summer. FYI - The Lone Star Trail is very flat and very easy. If I don't like the Exos there, then I won't like it anywhere. Mine came with the hip-belt pockets, but the way they are fitted you almost need two hands to zip it back up once you unzip it. But at least it has them. Other reviews talked about how great the side pockets are, and that you can get your water bottle in and out without taking off the pack. Maybe it's because I am older and not so limber any more, but there is no way on earth I will ever be able to re-insert a one-liter water bottle with the pack on. On a plus note - I can get the water bottle out just fine without having to stop. All-in-all, I like the simplicity of the pack and look forward to using it. I'm hoping it is turns out to be comfortable on longer hikes. My other packs are the Osprey ACE 50 and the Ascend Rattlesnake 55. The ACE 50 is a lot like the Exos but with bottom zippered access to the main compartment and a main compartment divider. Very nice pack with plenty of torso adjustment. Perfect for a teen-ager who is still growing (my son uses it a lot). For anyone thinking about getting a Cabela brand pack, the Rattlesnake 55 is pretty nice. It is heavy by today's standards at 5.5 pounds, but it is VERY comfortable. There is definitely a weight vs comfort tradeoff factor that comes into play, but I'll carry extra weight any day if it means my back and neck don't hurt. 5.5 pounds sounds like a lot, but it is just about one-liter of water heavier than the Exos 58 L/XL. It has tons of pockets on it which makes it super easy to organize stuff, and the main compartment has zippered access from both sides, meaning you don't have to unload everything from the top to get to that item in the middle or bottom. I took the Ascend up to Cottonwood Lakes, slack-packed up to Whitney, and then finished up at Whitney Portal. I would do it again with that pack (FYI - that's me and my son in my profile picture on top of Whitney ). Sorry - pretty much got into a review of the Ascend. Thanks again for the review!

    I went up in September & hiked The Alum Cave Trail. It was beautiful all the way to the village. There is a few dangerous spots where you only have a few feet of earth to walk along the side of the mountain. Be careful or take a harness. Most people just hold the wire. It’s worth the climb tho. Chimney Tops & Laura Falls was nice too. I’ve hiked them. I’m coming back in the spring for several days to hike more & travel a part of the blue ridge parkway.

    Another great video Aman. I have thought of this subject and now find myself living on hard ground, well about sea level in Central New Zealand. Another place I consider a safer than average place is in Tasmania, the island state of Australia. Like NZ it's cool, well watered with hydro and wind power. Also a small population with some good soil is a bonus. The one unknown factor for Tasmania is it's close proximity to Melbourne, Australia's largest city. It's also for extra buoyancy at the front to aid lift over less than very calm waters.

    I wasn't lucky with this model. Bought one from Amazon, it was not symetrical when inflated. Had a bigger belly on one side than the other. Was kinda out of balance when on the water. BRought it back and send to Amazon to trade for another equal model and it was in a worse shape. What was strange was the tension it got in that "belly" when the rest of the top volume wasn't that hard. So it blew up before I even got it on the water. Very frustrating. So I lost my trust on the model and returned it with my money back. But looking at your video made me think I was really unlucky...

      That’s really unfortunate. I haven’t had that problem with mine, but it also can’t work for everyone. I’m sure there’s another model that will work for you!

    How much have you paid to enter and camp in the park, can you camp in any area?

    • @AmanLuthra
      @AmanLuthra Před rokem

      It costs $30 to enter, unless you have an annual pass. Camping is usually $25 if you want to do frontcountry camping at a reserved site. Backcountry is free to camp wherever you find a spot.

    I was just there a week ago. We did chimney tops, clingman's dome, and laurel falls. Saw a bear and cub on the laurel falls hike. Chimney tops was the best hike but did have 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Clingman's dome has the best scenery on the right day. Laurel was a solid shorter hike.

    Morning hiker for me to beat the crowds. Haven't tried evening though so maybe crowds die down at some point.
