Welcome to my channel! I post monthly videos on a mixture of film analyses, retrospectives, politics and just absolutely overthinking anything to do with pop culture.
Spoiler warnings are placed on videos that discuss shows/movies with a twist, recent shows/movies, or shows/movies that aren't the subject of the video. If you're watching a video about a show/movie that is over a decade old, very famous in pop culture, and the subject of my video - then please watch at your own discretion.
My business email is linked on this page. Please be mindful that I receive a great number of requests for academic interviews, reviewing or promoting films (particularly student films), and guest speaking on podcasts. I try my best to respond to these inquiries - but I cannot commit myself to all of them, so I have to be sparing. This does not reflect on the quality of your research, film, or podcast - and more so that I don't want to spread myself too thin! Apologies if I don't get back to you!

If you've watched First Reformed and felt like it changed your life, you're not the only one! First Reformed was Paul Schrader's first attempt at a style of cinema he himself coined back in 1972: the Transcendental Style, and there's a reason it has some an impact. Come along on this spiritual journey.

Burton is what he hates. The dynasty a franchise. The awkward kid eventually becomes the N.Y yankees
How is "you can be quite boring" similar to "your politness is so grating" ?
One thing I like when I need an emotional outlet is to listen to the album OK Computer by Radiohead. Because it's easy to relate to the feelings of isolation and sadness that the music creates.
I honeslty have trouble believing that the crisis in masculinity is real so much as it is the media paying too much attention to a set of poorly socialized idiots. On the whole the world is very kind to young men so long as they have good manners and display some amount of talent/work ethic. The only crisis that has happened is that most parents have failed to teach their son's basic self care meaning that unless these men make enough money they live and eat like slobs for most of their adulthood.
Non of the actors or director are gay and they create a great mostly gay movie. That's why acting is not easy...when a gay is portrayed by gay, there is no much acting or risking involved. That's way The Talented Mr Ripley movie is great and the gay cinema ship is gone in 2024. I remember also Kiss Of The Spider Woman or I Love You, Phillip Morris; also great gay movies. My point is non gay people wouldn't pay to watch a gay movie today...the ship now is about be devoured by sunset. Just ask Bros. Edit. I haven't seen Call Me By Your Name yet...I will soon to have the full scope. I know I'm leaving good cinema behind, but this is me going as far as my heterosexual persona is going futher into the gay subject.
Waiting patiently for a mention of Winter Light
The soundtrack made this film camp AH
The vibes are so important! I don't think that You've got mail is inherently good romcom material but I'll watch it again and again just because of the vibes and music and the highly specific cultural references. It's Nora Ephron's romanticized version of a very particular, very quirky and intellectual New York, it's the biggest character in the movie and what brings the protagonists together, really, and I enjoy spending 100 minutes in that world. With the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s, it's the characters and dialogue. I cannot count how many times I've watched Bringing up Baby, His Girl Friday or The Philadelphia Story. I'm invested in these characters and the quotable script. Many of the newer romcoms, like *Anyone but You* really don't have much to make them re-watchable. They're often just fine but most are never beyond fine.
ugh so beautiful! a religious journey if you will!!
For me, the ending scene where Barbie talks to Ruth was what the entire movie should have been about. It felt like a completely different movie and actually felt like it was trying to say something interesting. Everything else felt rushed, shoehorned in, and honestly not very new. I felt like the movie was making a feminist point ten or more years ago... so, totally unnecessary. Don't get me wrong, I had fun watching the movie, but that's about it. But what can you expect from a big budget, corporate backed film?
I still love him. He’s a true artist and he knows what’s good. Can’t fault him for that. I agree with his aesthetics.
Kinda surprised Brian's Song wasn't mentioned in this as it's probably the ultimate male weepie. There was a time when it was considered one of the few movies it was ok for men to cry after. In fact, you were considered heartless if you didn't cry.
It's really great to see you aging and developing an even deeper sense of art and your readings and relationship with it. Thanks for the video (and the podcast, which is always great) ❤
I mean Dune is about colonialism, I think you missed the point there
