    Every man being a soldier is not very different than today. Notice any women or children in the refugee boats? Only men in their 20s, soldiers the moment they get a gun.

  • @baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714

    Id say it takes 50% of the blame, the other 50% goes to the copious ammounts of corruption. You know like most of the modern West which is Romes sucessor. If only our leadership learned from history...

  • @baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714

    So your observations are exactly the same as mine. I will say that an army can not be seen seperatly from the society who it serves and who staffs it. It was not the armies fault that roman culture had changed and people wouldnt flock to the banners uppon news of a defeat reaching them and thus losses became harder to replace. Id say the early Empire was stonger than the late Empire, which had way too much corruption to handle and is what ultimetly really doomed it. But when it actually comes to military units the better equipment and tactics of the late Empire shows, the early imperial legionares would have a hard time cutting fully armored troops or even getting past their long spears let alone deal with cataphract charges.

    This is an amazing video, you should keep making more like these in the future! A good option besides the macedonian manuals would be the Ordinance of Charles the Bold, which set a firm "uniform" look to his troops, which was something not at all common in late medieval europe. They also look super cool!

    I like the detail that a soldier who feels handsome will fight whith more confidence and inspire fear. I sometimes see people saying "this was to inspire fear"' when looking at ANYTHING, is like when people say something is ceremonial. Feathers? fear. Crests? fear. Any piece of armor? also fear. Like, i get it, some pieces of armor were designed whith that purpose, like the mempo, but most of the times helmet decorations must have been for distinction and fashion. Nobody will convince me that a feather in a helmet is the scary part. That's why I like what this text says, they had cool armor whith some ornamentation which makes them look cooler. And that confidence it gives is what makes the soldier more fearsome. Also that line can very well be allied to modern dressing, dressing well to feel a bit more confident

    • @pavelthefabulous5675
      @pavelthefabulous5675 Před 11 dny

      I think psychologically, you could see the feathers and tassels as things that stick out in the mind. If someone wearing a distinctive fur har shot an arrow at me, I would remember the fur hat quite clearly. There is also an account that German foot soldiers who fought against the Mongols (in the Hungarian King's army?) were very transfixed by the elite Mongol cavalry's shining steel lamellar armor. In a way, there is something inherently scary about facing a well-armored enemy, but I think things like the shininess and decoration catch the eye just as much as stuff like skull flags or demon faces.

    3:24 The manica seems really useful, and after discovering it I often found myself wondering why ancient and medieval infantry didn't often wear more armor on the right (weapon) arm than the left (shield) arm, given that while the shield protects the left arm, with a symmetrical set of armor (unless we're talking heavy cavalry armor) there was often NOTHING protecting the left (sword/spear) arm, which of course made ancient and medieval infantry vulnerable when attacking from behind their shields.

    Of course, the worst part is naming the sources. If you are in school or university, this is not really an issue (you just read about it and hopefully have taken enough notes). But afterwards it gets really frustrating: You know the facts, but you can not recall where you saw them. Which gives you two options: 1. Rereading the stuff 2. Writing a commentary instead.
