Acorn Amps - Migfet Preamp (V2)
The Migfet is a pedalboard-friendly way to get that classic Sovtek Mig 50 sound. For this video I run it into my interface and threw some IRs behind it. But you could just as easily run it through the effects loop of another amp to get that Mig style from any amp.

  • @matthewearl9824
    @matthewearl9824 Před dnem

    I see what you're saying, but I think the problem is you're trying to use the tonex in order to acquire tones from amps you don't own. And then on top of it, you're not getting the sound that you want from the captures. Many, on the other hand already have tube amps and they use the toneex in order to capture their rig. This is how I use it. Most people I know that gig with it use it the same way.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 11 hodinami

      To me this is what’s so interesting about gear. Its use case varies so much. I know about a dozen people using either this or the big guy regularly. None of them own the amps they’re using in ToneX. In fact, in a couple of cases the guys don’t own a single amp. Even among demoers on here it’s probably a 50/50 split. Ultimately, the sounds aren’t nearly as bad as the UI. Both the physical UI of the One and the app’s UI are definitely the worst I’ve ever used. I can’t think of one that’s worse. Now, I’m sure I could’ve gotten used to it but I never found a sound I liked enough that it was worth the effort.

    Eq and boost in the fx loop gives me such a great control over my frequency pallette without sacrificing any dynamics. I run this into a 4x12 and this thing isn't just loud but has that 'umph' I wasn't expecting from an orange designed amplifier. It won't let you down

    I found a fantastic sound in 5 minutes. I had no reason to tweak it. It sounds amazing. Captures are amazing but completely limited. The reason for the Tonex One is for someone like me. I found the tone I want and now it’s done. This thing is a steal for under $200. It’s the sound quality without the option anxiety.

    i liked the idea of the packrat, but didn't feel like dropping that much for a pedal. then i heard about the 1312 and what Black Mass does with half the proceeds of the pedal, and i did feel like dropping that much for a pedal. i have to have a RAT on my board, and i like having the 1312 on there, it sounds rad. i think i usually leave it on one of the asymmetrical clipping settings (4th setting clockwise. i remember hearing some versions had the mode switch upside down on accident, so some of the online demos differ depending on the version.) anyways, long live the RAT pedal!

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 22 dny

      I had pretty much the same reaction to it. When the heard the 1312 for the first time I was like “this is cool”. When I learned about where the money goes I was like “placing order now” lol.

  • @LennyKant
    @LennyKant Před 23 dny

    So True. I ordered, it came and returned back in day. Cons 1. Software is extremely bad. 2. Hiss or static issue in pedal with earphones, additional pedals and computer is irritating. 3. Not able to find proper sound and not having realtime update of sound between Hardware and Software is bad. Pros 1. Small form factor Moreover, every single video out there speaks about how great the pedal is, but most of the CZcamsrs are using their own IRs or provided by IK, which ultimately sounds good in the mix. They don’t speak about the cons this pedal has. It is frustrating for musicians who are on budget and buy the product, later on returning it back.! The day IK makes the software better, I might go back and buy it.

      @BMinusDemos Před 23 dny

      As a tech guy you know, a poor UI can hurt an otherwise killer product. I never expect perfection from a piece of gear. And I can work with a few quirks from an app/software. @BMinusDemos Před 26 dny

      I agree with this. I genuinely appreciate what it represents. And I actually like that not every company approaches digital amp solutions in the same way. That gives people the flexibility to find what works for them, just like with physical gear. I do think that just like with any other piece of technology, poor UI can be the biggest hurdle even for good tech.

  • @dougfishback3116
    @dougfishback3116 Před 28 dny

    I haven’t had the problems you described, but you presented them in a reasonable way. The IK models are fine to me, but I’ve had better luck with Amalgam models - e.g., the Hiwatt is especially good. It’s to be expected that users will need to put some time into finding and tweaking their favorite tones, but in my experience, it hasn’t been any more difficult than working with other digital gear. Thanks for the vid.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 27 dny

  • @rethinktone
    @rethinktone Před 28 dny

    Yeah i agree that the software and workflow is designed terribly. Not to mention the input gain issues with changing it depending on the guitar. I dont agree that "its not great." Its one of those things where its amazing at some things and terrible at others. Once you have explored all your captures and they are all downloaded, just leave it. I love it and i think its brilliant despite the issues, now that i have all the sounds i would ever want on it. I havent had to tinker with it too much once i got my sounds. The sound quality as it relates to other products is just far superior, even products over 1000. The software will get better over time. But averaging the problems it has versus the pros is not an accurate picture of the product.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 27 dny

      It works really well for some. I traded it to a buddy and he really digs it. But captures just aren’t my thing. I keep trying but just haven’t been able to get them to fit in my workflow. As I said, that’s not saying they’re bad, they just don’t work for me. But I keep trying. Maybe one day I’ll find one that changes my mind.

    • @rethinktone
      @rethinktone Před 27 dny

      @BMinusDemos yeah if you're not picky with authenticity I can see why modelers and plugins would be better.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 27 dny

      @rethinktone I’m not super picky with authenticity. Many of these amps I haven’t played in years or maybe have never played. It’s be like me judging the authenticity of food type I’ve never had. I just don’t have the knowledge base to make that call. But what I can judge is whether or not I enjoy playing it. That’s always my primary focus. I never ask “is this perfect”, I ask “do I like this”.

    • @rethinktone
      @rethinktone Před 27 dny

      @BMinusDemos yeah I haven't played a real marshal plexi. But I played the hx stomp version of it and I was not a fan of the sound. It felt lifeless. But if you haven't run into that issue makes your life way easier. I have to configure my hx effects with my tonex through midi, which is super annoying.

  • @jamesearl389
    @jamesearl389 Před 28 dny

    I’ve taught guitar bass and keys for 31 years, produced 20 albums……..and worked music retail since 92. The idea that anyone could legitimately gripe about Tonex (or Kemper, or line 6, etc) is hilarious to me. I could load two captures in a Tonex One (my favorite is a glassy clean to AC/DC Astoria capture along with the same amp dimed with a tube screamer) and play a club or arena with nothing but that, a single pedal that could fit in my pocket comfortably. Put one in the loop of an HX Effects? You’ve got more horsepower than an 80s rig with three fridge sized racks. We should all have 5 of them.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 28 dny

      My “gripe” is the user interface. Since I don’t play live the UI is 95% of how I interact with it. And captures are just so limiting really. However, if I played in a band and was looking for a specific and consistent tone I do think it’s something I’d like. It just doesn’t serve what I need.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 28 dny

      But…as I said 37 times, this isn’t bad. It just isn’t for me. With something like Tonocracy which is 100% free, ToneX just doesn’t make sense for me.

  • @MartinVazChannel

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před měsícem

      It’s like I said, it’s all about preference. I think the capture technology is probably this things strongest aspect…I just don’t like captures. Also someone like Pete goes for a VERY different than I would ever use. But this is true for analog gear as well. Some guitar players dream of owning a Dumble. For me, its only value would be that I could sell it and buy something I’d actually use lol. ToneX isn’t bad (although the user interface is pretty rough), it just isn’t for me.

It isn't transferable you buy bit you own it and if someone ourates your serial number your screwed and stuck with a door stop.. I cannot say enough bad about IKEA and their lack of support and help. @BMinusDemos Před měsícem

      This is 1000% not correct. I get being upset because it didn’t work right for you but what you’re saying isn’t true. I had the same issue with the serial number. All it took was a couple of emails to IK (not IKEA - that might be your issue, lol) and it was fixed. And I mention this in the review. I didn’t keep this. I traded it to a friend. He had the same issue at first. But again, a couple of emails with IK support and it was all fixed. I literally hate everything about this comment. Being so viciously negative because you can’t figure out how to get something to work is a MAJOR thumbs down. This is a common issue and should’ve been solved by IK long ago. But this energy ain’t it.

    As someone who has been switched fully over to the full fat ToneX pedal for a while now, it's the ideal backup rig for me. I use the One for a drive on my board before the big ToneX, but keep my usual favourite couple of amp profiles in it in reserve so if the full size pedal goes down, backup is right there. Plus running off a tiny USB power bank it makes the perfect little mini headphone amp for wandering around the house tucked into a pocket, haha. If you're already in the ToneX ecosystem it's a no brainer addition, but I'd certainly not want it as my only option.

    Thanks a lot for the honest review! This really highlights things that people would run into when actually using this thing. I was considering the ToneX One for bass, but finally ordered the Zoom MS-60B+. I also would like some effects along with amp models, all in a small form-factor, but with infinite knobs and a screen for easy operation. Let's see if it fits my needs, it should arrive tomorrow. Zoom will also release a pedal specifically for impulse response, the MS-80IR+. Sure, you won't get the ToneX ecosystem with it, but easy operation, and the option to use it on battery. And they also have software to program the pedals more easily. Sadly only for iOS... Sometimes having only a few knobs and no screen doesn't mean it's easy to navigate. E. g. the Line 6 POD Express has the same issue with traditional knobs not representing the actual value, and the inconvenience of having to use an alt button to access the EQ.

    Sick riffing in the intro song - I recognized it immediately. I've always been looking to emulate MO's wall of sound on the guitar-heavy Cope album (specifically the crunchy, driving, grungy, ballad-y intro to The Mansion.) I see they've used a lot of drives and fuzzes over the years, and I'm not quite sure how they got that super nice tone on that album. This pedal looks and sounds so sick though. I love the idea of a Rat/Muff combo, and I've been digging a lot of pedal makers from Australia.

      This is such a gnarly pedal. Any time I sit down with a fuzz that isn’t just completely over the top I almost always lean towards some MO type stuff. Andy Hull is one of my favorite song writers both musically and lyrically. I know for the longest time he credited his tone to that red tele he’s plays all the time with the pickup wired straight to the output. No volume or tone wired at all.

    • @bw5260

      @bw5260 same. I have an Eclipse with just a humbucker sized P90 in the bridge. I have it going to volume and then out but I’m always tempted to just bypass the volume altogether.

I use the standalone librarian to move presets to the pedal I do NOT use it as an audio interface I have an RME Babyface Pro for an interface I didn't like the UI either, now i'm flying with it Sadly, the librarian does NOT run on iOS Probably never will I love ToneX One now

      It really works for a lot of people. I ended up trading this to a friend of mine and to the best of my knowledge he’s really digging it. I’m not a bass player and so I don’t have a lot of specific tones I’m looking for, so it actually would’ve worked fine for me in bass as well. It's unfortunate that Black Mass didn't put any labels on the Clip knob. It's pretty hard to tell which one we're hearing. So comparing different model types across the 2 pedals that aren't necessarily even the same sound is a bit disorienting. Overall though, I gotta say, preferred most of the 1312 tones.

    • @BMinusDemos
      @BMinusDemos Před 2 měsíci

      I think putting it on the face of the pedal would have been too messy. But I have seen builders put a label on the back of the pedal. That’s helpful. JHS’ distinguish marks aren’t super useful if you aren’t aware of the history of each version of the circuit. That’s why instead of individual models being compared it was more of an all of one pedal and all of the other kind of thing.
