Hello! A few years ago I discovered the fun hobby of painting with watercolors and the Hake brush and started learning from the teachings of Ron Ranson. I want to inspire others to paint using a fast, loose & fun technique. I am also an admin of the Facebook group The Ron Ranson Disciples.

Something I rarely do and I got in the way too much of the camera but I thought you might enjoy seeing it. It was cold and windy but the last painting of the day I tried was a winner. Bockigford paper and a few big brushes including the hake. Should I do more videos like this one?

Fast and loose sketchbook exercise. This is meant to be a fun quick method and I do these to show you this fun way to paint. Thanks for watching I hope this inspires. I used the Canson graduate sketchbook for this one. Someone once left a comment that there are better artists on You Tube. I agree! But I do demos not to show how good I am but that you can do now and not after 20 years of paintin...

Very nice 👍 Thanks 🙏 Would you please get some full pans instead of squishing a big brush into tiny 1/2 pan😂 That is painful to watch and I ain't even vegan😂
But I like my travel pans. 😁
Seriously what if there was a small wringer for your bucket similar to a mop wringer
It’s not really necessary with watercolor because a few swishes and the brush is clean 🧼
Just imagine how big a sketchbook you would need to paint the giant redwoods 😂
The largest painting in the world is 17,000 sq feet.
I really like this one 👍
Test for how old you are. Are your trees named John😂
These are named “Birch”.
@@joemenzaartthere was a right wing group called John Birch see yous a yoyngin😂
I’m a youngin but the jokes are getting old 😀😂🤣😁😂😄😅😃😀
@@joemenzaartsorry life today is boring with our humor
I’m never bored unless in waiting in line or at like a Dr office or something like that. Thank God for smartphones!
Nice plein air Joe. Was that 2" house paint brush nylon? Thanks...
Actually it was a bob ross brush
Great video again😊
Who do your "fan" brushes like best😂
@@andrewbrimmer1797 me!
I love this! Very inspirational and I can’t wait to try it!
@@lynnerose-parras4764 thank you much appreciated!
This is my fave painting that you've ever done. I'm newer to watercolor (started getting back into painting about 4-5 years ago) and follow your channel. You are a Plein aire painter. This style of painting reminds me a bit of Poppy Balser, another great watercolor artist that I follow. Please do more of these. Love it!
Really wow thank you.
I like seeing you paint and your commentary; I HATE plein air painting....oh, for so many reasons. I think of it like golfing....it spoils a good walk! Joe, stay inside and help us all become better interpreters of what's out there without battling the elements. All the best to you, Joe.
I agree although I think like Joseph Zbukvic says it (plein air) will help you become a better painter. I need to pick a better day and not block the camera so much
I like the painting Joe
The camera could do with being more to the side. Nice fleece, but not what i want to look at😅
Sorry I mentioned that in the description. The day I set out to do this things didn’t go well and when I watched the footage I didn’t realize how much I was in the way of the camera but I thought I’d post it anyway.
Seriously it really depends on how comfortable it is doing them
@@andrewbrimmer1797 it’s not but I’m sure it can be acclimated to over time like anything.
The best laid plans of men😂
@@andrewbrimmer1797 yes. Everyone got fleeced
Very enjoyable video Joe I'm always fascinated how you achieve such awesome work, thanks greatly appreciate your inspirational talent stay safe and healthy
More plein air!!
Hey everyone, I originally set out to do plein air videos but the elements got to me. The sea was angry that day my freinds. LOL. This was the best video and painting of the day. Should I do more of these? This was painted on Bockingford paper.
Yes please, but can you show up close how you carve out the trees w/the credit card? Do you use the corner or edge? Going to try to paint this one. It almost looks abstract. Thanks in advance!
@@SVNopq I just did a few rocks and trunks. I have several scraping videos. When scraping use the flat edge of the card for rocks and the corner for sticks and trees
@@joemenzaart Thank you!
You just answered my question from another of your videos, thanks!
@@janmcintosh327 yes! I answered on that video and I thought I would make a quick short based on your question. Thank you 😀
What are you using to scrape the paint on the mountains. I love the effect. I watch as many of your videos as I can. I love your paintings.
Thank you! I’m using a plastic palette knife. You can also use a credit card.
Beautiful And so nice to hear the colours as you go
I live this painting.
Thank you.
Until now I have always painted ‘tight’…neat and tidy! You have given me the confidence to try something different and I am loving it! Thanks so much.
Thank you for watching I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Hey everyone hope you like this new video and series. Comment, like, and subscribe 🎉 in this video series we focus on the fundamentals. Great for Beginners.
I love watercolour paintings like this. They are surreal and it feels like looking through your memory. These kind of painting always make me feel a hint of nostalgia
I know what you mean and they have like an old world vintage quality. Thanks for the comment!
Your voice is so relaxing.
Nice of you to say, thank you.
so gorgeous! the painting is full of movement!
Thank you!
Amazing painting. and in only 5 minutes. The amount of detail in such a short space of time is something to be admired.
Thank you that is the beauty of the hake brush it can really put in a lot of small details quickly
Thank you, Joe. I've watched you for years. I even purchase those goat hair brushes. Thank you for sharing all these years!😊
Thank you 🙏 good to hear from you.
Hi everyone hope you are doing great. Just a quick one by request. Remember these are meant to be fun! This is geared toward beginners or those new to the hake.
Nice!! Thank you Joe
Nice Joe. Encouraged to pick up my hake again
That’s Awesome thank you!
Beautiful painting sir!
Excellant Joe.. just to let you know my FB account was hacked and I can't use it anymore. I had to uninstalll it and now I will create another account to continue posting my work, till then buy and see you soon 😂🎉😮
I like the color lifting effect on the mountains and the fan brush work. Overall, the painting works well front to back loosely except for the streaky chemtrails in the sky, lol. Nice tutorial and technique. Thanks for sharing. Even the side of your clipboard gives a birch tree appearance.
Thanks. I think the streaks add a certain drama it’s certainly something you can change if there is an aspect you don’t like. Google streaky sky & you’ll see several examples of this that are just natural cloud formations maybe you’ll change your mind.
As a quick side note hopefully the better takeaway is my videos make people want to try painting. Remember any aspect can be changed, different palette colors used etc. If your painting has something like a streaky sky and it isn't something you like it can be altered with a milky wash. Maybe I will show this in a future video.
This is a fantastic technique Joe how you are able to create a painting with good detail depth in such a short time, thanks greatly appreciate that you share your talent which is inspiring to me and others
Thank you if I am inspiring then I am doing what I set out to do.
Amazing , thank you🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for watching
This is wonderful. You use purple! And it works so well. And you're rising the brush for the highlights on the mountains. That is so amazing I love this so much
Thank you! Cheers!
Love it! Thank you Joe:)
I'm just flabbergasted that you can make up scenery like this. I love it
Thanks. After you paint hundreds of scenes it’s easy to just move pieces around, trees, grass, water, mountains etc.
@@joemenzaarthopefully that's me one day 😂
If someone does it every day or nearly every day for an hour it will become second nature. The problem as artists we are never happy with our work even when we get better so we have to learn to appreciate ourselves in the now.
Amazing Joe I have seen many of your videos and find it really helpful in how you seem only using a fan brush create an inspirational piece of work, thanks greatly appreciate you sharing with us
Thanks it’s such a versatile brush.
Bob Ross of Watercolour. Thanks for sharing Joe always appreciate your work 👍
Such a cool thing to be called since I started as a Bob Ross fan, never knew I’d achieve that. Thanks!
@joemenzaart It's true you always turn those watercolours into oils, don't know how you do that my friend 😉
Love it Joe, going to do my version sending love from England
Thanks would love to see the result
I think the sky problem is because, doing it first, the retardant and water was still too wet. It had time to dry by the time we got to the mountains. ? Also, while you were laying it in, on the sky, I felt like you needed a heavier dose of the blue on the brush. I noticed that those streaks were going to be there before you moved on.
Thanks, this video is a few years old now and I mostly painted in watercolor so I was pretty new to the medium and trying paints sent to me by the myartscape company. If I remember correctly. Thanks for the comments
@@joemenzaart Yes. It was really only because you had said that you weren’t as certain about the acrylics as you are water paints that I had the … courage … to add my input.
@@starrdusk1 yes thank you so much for the input and comments much appreciated!

Yes I have the acrylic jars which I got after making the video
