You’re not within 5 feet of a car, all the time. Amazing!
Well it was Sunday morning before the days of Sunday shopping! Whole other world.
It's easy to escape from colchester but so hard to escape the colchester mindset - the tea-to-pee psycho world of the mirror mad bourgeoisie - the ghosts of colchester head disease will reamin on your shoulder forever once you've lived there - escape goat or no, you are polluted by this pinnacle of boredom and conformity, where the houses and horsehoes breathe « believe in the world of milk and money . Pour it all out and pick it all up. Put on your suit and tie yourself to submission. «
Nice editing and synchronisation of both journeys. Thank you for making this piece of history.
This is excellent! First time hearing Mr. Brunning play as a young lad! This song sounds like a version on his Magna Carta Concerto with my favorite Classical guitarist Xuefei Yang! Love it! Thank you for posting!❤
I have known John over 50 years, I will pass on your comment.
@@TheWurn2 Oh wow! That is awesome! I just love his song writing and guitar playing. His music is timeless. Thank you very much for responding and I wish you both well!❤️❤️
The old town centre looks a lot nicer Now, it is more like a slum😢
Thank you for this video. It brings back good memories when i wss living there in 1982/83 to learn English in Essex house school of English. Greetings from kuwait
Glad you enjoyed it
Brings so many memories. Keddies - miss that.
What was the outfitters type shop called, next to the main Gpo? I still have a wool reefer coat that I bought there mid £90s for £25! Great shop. Similar to Jacks And a couple of flannel Levi shirts too but they are long gone. Thanks for the memories.
The whalebone
A trip down memory lane. I still visit Colchester once a year. Worse for traffic than London. Shops closed. But Smiths bar is still there. Same owner.
Colchester has far less closed stores than most cities/towns.
I lived there in the 90s I lived in one of the nhs houses on Mill Rd Front and long rear garden, grass cut by nhs staff regularly. Had a lovely girlfriend who worked at Severalls, psych nurse. They had a cheap social cub and lots of sports pitches. Turner Village ditto. Both employed a lot of local people with pension benefits too. All sold off now. Lexden Rd Guntons Frank Wright butchers The Kings Arms Essex County Hospital Arms Brilliant days.
Wow how the town and sorounding areas has been built up and ruined (awsome videos )
Thank you, a bit slow responding but I forget to check!
Brilliant I have family in Colchester so is like a second home.
Glad you enjoy them.
1:30 I'm glad that car's brakes were up to it. This video's a perfect laid back, relaxing antidote to the stresses and strains of daily life.
Isn't it just! Thanks.
D0 a 2023 version :)
Great seeing the Keddies bridge once again & of course hearing some tunes from the one & only Radio Caroline. I use to fall asleep listening to that station as a teenager when I lived in Clacton, they were my musical education where I got introduced to so many amazing bands back in the day..I’m now sixty..oh the memories! Wish I could go back & do it all again..oh & we had proper winters back then too, miss those 👍😎⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fascinating drive around my neighbourhood a year after I was born its amazing what changes and what doesnt
Hello, I was wondering if you might consider licensing some of your Colchester material in a documentary I am involved in making? Please let me know and I can send my email address. Thank you! Katharine
Hi Katharine. I have no problem with that. Please go ahead.
My email is wurn2@aol.com
Oh time traveler!
Sorry a bit slow responding, just back from 2030, things not looking good.
Every lamp post from 1986 is tje same location today!
This is excellent! No doubt you've started something, someone will do this exact route in 25 years time. Excellent foresite in the 80s to do this
It definitely wont be me!
One of my student digs was in Mersea Rd, near St Botolphs Station, as it was called in 1986. (No one asked me if they could change the name to the bland Colchester Town!) Anyway there was a chippy under our flat, and the old lady Ruby who worked in there was lovely. She used to put extra chips in for me, and I once went down to the roundabout and picked flowers for her! Such lovely times, although my landlord and lady at Mersea Rd threw me out when they realised I was gay, and conducting an “immoral relationship” with my boyfriend of the time!
Back from the days when I was a 17 year old doing my A levels at Colchester Institute, and commuting by train from Clacton to Colchester every day! Lovely memories.
1996 per chance?
Great footage, utterly abysmal ' music'.
Unfortunately there is not much choice with the music without having to pay.
This just proves how much better colch was back in the day.
I've lived in colchester all 21 years of my life and it's fascinating to see how it was before I was born. This was around when my dad was in his teen years, Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it. You make me feel very old, doesn't seem that long ago I did it!
This is like a time machine. I loved 1986. Well done.
I am starting to feel old! Can't believe it was nearly 37 years ago.
@@TheWurn2 I was 15 then. What a prescient thing to record especially with the radio. In my humble opinion, pop music peaked in the mid 80s and rock music peaked in the autumn of 86. Some great albums released then. Excellent vid. Cheers.
I have a sneaky feeling you’ve caught me on my racer bike, I was 9 years old. How amazing thanks for sharing.
Brilliant, had a few people recognise cars over the years but you are the first person to do it.
All those lovely cars
36k .... for a house. Fffffffffffffffffffffffffff
I like these videos
I saw a few Renault 12s in this video. I haven't seen one in the flesh since 1993.
Awesome video. I live seeing the 70's and 80's cars in this.
I lov these videos. I'm from Harwich and I was 8 years old in 1986. used to go to tesco highwoods to get toys, and Williams and Griffin... and c &a
Amazing even as recently as 1986 just how fewer cars there were on the road compared to now. In the 2012 runs I wonder how you're even getting through some of the gaps. I also think the standard of driving today is slightly higher. I've seen plenty of archive footage with people speeding, tailgating, dodgy lane changes, park where you want, almost no traffic management at all. --- And I've lived in the same area for 10 years now so wish I'd thought of doing something like this. It would be so interesting for me to have driven the same route again 10 years on and seen what's changed (probably more than I realise or notice actually).
This is amazing, i live near these places and it’s so amazing to see Colchester and it’s history back then!
Wow! I lived in Colchester in the mid 60s to 1972, and even from your 1986 drive I recognise SO little. I guess if I visited the town today it will have changed beyond recognition. The only places I recognised were the town hall, the bus station (though that was a covered shed when I worked there for a few weeks in 1970.) and maybe some of the properties on what must have been Hythe Hill. Fascinating video!
You would have no chance today, we don't even have a proper bus station.
i lived opposite there...valentines drive
This video starts literally next to my old house. Last one on Broadlands. 99 maybe? Didn’t move there til about 1997 when I was 4, but still crazy seeing it start there!
You make me feel very old!
I’d forgotten this but found I know the lyrics - many a night in the Colne Lodge. I’m currently looking for “If matches are made in heaven (why does it say ‘Sweden’ on the box?”)
Great footage...
Immaculate classic cars everywhere, great video thanks!
This arrangement happened in about 5 minutes based on John's guitar riff. It just all fell into place effortlessly. I remember rehearsing at Stanway Hall when we first played this!
You need to load 'Here is the News'. I can send you a file. It is timeless and more poignant than ever!!
Thanks Paul will do. Do you mean a video or audio file?
@@TheWurn2 I only have audio files of several Boy Bastion songs that you haven't loaded yet. Thanks to Harty.
@@boomacracka by all means send them and I will add them. I have all the singles but have never converted them .
@@TheWurn2 How should I send them? Dropbox link?
@@boomacracka just email them to wurn2@aol.com please. I will dig out the singles and photograph the labels to go with them, ta.
the hyth has change immensly hey! I remember my Dad parking along the edge of the river, no railings, back in the 80s to get a chinese takeaway down there.
One of the best things about colchester is the historic importance of the buildings. It means not too much is allowed to be changed.
Blimey, the lack of NCP carpark at the end of queens street!
He starts at the garages at the end of Broadlands way off of the ipswich road. I used to work at the ford garage/dealer he drives past right at the beginning.
Cool. Although by '86 I was all growed up, as a teenager, I used to buy most of my plastic model kits from Williams & Griffin. Used to walk into town from Monwick to even save the bus fare for the models :D
From an ex-Monwick boy, I knew the area well! :D
