Oh no - big shakeup here for me! This might finally displace Shirley Horn’s version of the song when it’s performed with the Bergman’s English lyric! So many singers treat each written line as if it were a stand-alone statement, without breathing through the lines to make more sense, but Lori gets it right, where some otherwise great singers have made it seem sing-song. The vocal improv is gorgeous, completely free of generic clichés, and through-composed beautifully. The band is perfect. What a lovely performance! If you love this tune, also search for the version of Ivan Lins doing it with the original Portuguese lyric, and Simone (a frequent collaborator) performing it with him. That video is from his concert DVD “Cantando Histórias.” The performance is enhanced by the obvious affection between them; they had been making music together on and off for many years, and this 2004 performance catches Simone at the height of her vocal powers. She’s got great pipes, great time and swing, and a range that extends from an alto/contralto all the way down to part of a male baritone’s compass. 2004 is the same year she released “Baiana da Gema,” all of Ivan Lins’ music, with his participation throughout, and his performance on several cuts.
Wow! I thank you for this comment [and I’m sure Lori appreciates it as well!] As the owner / operator of the studio, where this was recorded, I must admit your perspective is above my “pay grade” and that I only ever came at this recording from an instinctual level. I agree Lori is spectacular [not that you said it like that] and based on decades of recording people I KNEW this was brilliant [from her and the band]. I have read, in the comments here, a couple times, that the song is MUCH better in its original language? I have no doubt about this And that the translation is also way off ? Again, “above my pay grade” I have enough trouble with my own language and will never learn Portuguese [?} [not sure what the original language is?]. And not that you asked OR care…but my “occupational hazard” is that I find no “solace” in music … I still LOVE working with people [like Lori] but I don’t;t listen or play music for enjoyment or escapism. And in fact my favorite “sound” is silence… yet this recording never fails to move me… a rare experience for me after years of “hardening”. This is also how I know what Lori has done here is special. So thank you again for your kind words! Lori and I appreciate it VERY much! And I will take your comments,on face value? Since I have no interest in listening to anyone else’s version [again because of the “occupational hazard’, and NOT because I doubt you or even feel like I’m missing out?… if I’m making ANY sense??? 😂
@@Studio51media It’s not that the Portuguese lyric is better, in some way; it’s that it’s just a completely different story. The English lyric by Alan and Marilyn Bergman doesn’t attempt to translate the Portuguese lyric at all. This one is a love song; the part of a love affair where the people are still drunk on each other’s bodies. (The Bergmans were great lyricists - at one Oscars event, three of the five nominations for “Best Song” had their lyrics.) But they’re not telling the same story here as the Portuguese lyric, which talks about a willingness to try to start over again on a relationship which has been painful in the past. As for too much music… it’s like air. Even though you had a breath a few seconds ago, the next one can be delicious, and you can’t hold on to either one. I was on the bandstand six nights a week for 14 years, and I certainly sometimes got tired of the stuff that was paying my rent right then, but there’s just so much music manifesting so many minds, and that experience of being moved that you mentioned can sneak up on you unexpectedly when you just happen to find yourself open to what just happens to be in the air around you.
