as someone who grew up in Australia with English parents consuming western media, i have an australian accent but not a thick one, when i sing and rap it comes out naturally with an american accent. when i try to sing or rap in australian i find it near impossible and awkward. i cannot explain this, but many people have asked me why dont you sound aussie when you rap, my best explanation is when i open my mouth this is what comes out. i feel its less that we are trying to sound american and more that we are heavily influenced by american music. that being said there are still aussies that rap and sing in more of an aussie way, so id say its down to the individual. if me being born on a piece of land that isnt the same as another piece of land make me any different from any other human being then i would be believing in social constructs as true reality. the media i consumed throughout my life including movies has been 80%+ american.
