    Alec, that 97/98 season we had Marco Negri who scored about 30 goals (league) by Christmas and then plays squash with Sergio Porrini who whacks the ball into his eye, and sent him to the injury list, then we beat Celtic twice in quick succession, on in the league and the other in the Scottish Cup semi before losing to Kilmarnock. If Negri had not played squash we could had the league wrapped up. Memories

    • @FatEck1999
      @FatEck1999 Před 3 dny

      Aye, tell me about it, mate. We run up the league flag, Negri starts off with five goals v Dundee United and I'm thinking "Ten incoming". I never liked squash to begin with - now I hate it as a sport. The loss at Pittodrie too - I think the week after Thern's OF winner at Ibrox - was absolutely eviscerating. The knowledge it would take another decade to get back into that situation.

Think I'm just gonnae stay up all night Friday and go to bed around 11am Saturday and check the phone for the score when I awake. If it's good news, I'll watch the recording. Jeezo Alec, far too many similarities to myself, the car doors, avoiding green and on matchdays I've a ritual where I use a Rangers towel after showering. That's my last visit to Ibrox this Season, hope by next one we've added two more notches to our trophy tally (not counting bairns and lassies..can I use that term in 2024?) Fare thee well chum

      Aye, it's the Rangers men we need to all be worrying about right now, Finlay - every other department, gender and age group seems to be looking after themselves just fine. Sorry to hear you won't make the Dundee game, sir - especially as I'm hoping it's the night we gain our unassailable lead at the top of the table (no tittering at the back!) - but I'm glad you're getting a well-earned break from all that travelling. You've more than earned every notch going - the team should know that and fight to provide you with a few more this term. Already having a superstition meltdown about the Welders hat but Rangers towel you say? Right, I'm off to New Edmiston House... then the shower!

    If we do happen to grind out a victory at parkhead it would be the most Rangers thing ever to either then go drop points the next game or else they win it on goal difference. Which we have nobody to blame but ourselces for the rather annoying, boring style of football we play under Beale earlier in the season and now Clement now with this once ahead in a game just going down a gear or 2 conserving energy for the next match. Rather than going up the gears and racking up a few more goals. The problem is we don't have goalscoring midfielders, never mind forwards. Rangers should always have a striker actially TWO strikers getting 20 goals a aeason. Or one that gets 25+ & the other getting near to 20. But also midfielders that chips in with 10 goals particuarly from outside the box. Like Lawrence's goal today, we dont see it anywhere near often enough. Its all defensive passy passy slow it down type players we have. It's the sign of a old team an old tired team. Not even just age wise but we have all seen teams/squads who have just come to the end of their run & their era has now passed. It's time for a new era. We seen it at the end of Walter Smiths first reign, even during that reign after the 92/93 season with the CL exploits etc. That team was in the next season or so beginning to get tired & had he not then moved on to the Gazza, Laudrup, Albertz era & just stuck with that same squad, i believe that we may not have gotten 9iar. That aswell as celtic were a farce at the time too but they did get their act together under Tommy Burns & had Walter not been shrewd enough to change that squad up we probably wouldn't have been able to keep that run going. It's the opposite today but still the same principle. The squad led by guys who are very old & tired at winning very little. That era needs to be really & truely over & said goodbye to and a NEW era with a NEW captain begins Just like at the end of the Walter era when Advocaat took over, those players were legends, won so much but still had to be moved on from for a new era to start, which was sucessfull for the first couple of seasons. The lesson is holding onto the same ones too long does nothing for you. You stagnate & if your rival doesn't its even worse. Tavernier had been there since Warburton that is a joke. IMO he is a terrible influence upon the dressing room and not a Captain whatsoever! He is always so DOUR & miserable! Even when we win he is so doom n gloom. He wouldn't inspire me whatsoever if i was a player. He'd drain me of energy actually. He has a negative energy about him. So does Goldson. Only when they leave i truely believe that cloud over our team will leave too. Its absolutely crying our for a new era. Even if he does happen to lift the tirle this season or better still the treble. He should take that as an absolute gift for a leaving present! To leave the club on the ultimate high as he will never top that. Either way win or lose he HAS to move on now!

    It was an astonishing decision to retain Jack for another season when we knew, we all knew he was going to be injured for a long period of time. I totally agree with Colin, we should have retained Arfield over Jack, Arfield qualified for the homegrown rule as did Jack, madness from Beale. Arfield got 9 goals last season from the bench, he was worth a year.

    For me a couple of good things happened in this game. Silva got a much needed goal for his confidence, and each of the scorers were unusual names on the scoresheet. That meaning the message of others stepping up has clearly hit home. Especially when Tav has a bad game.

      Aye, very good points, Pete. Over the last four games our form hasn't approached anything like the levels we need for next Saturday but it is undeniably on an upward curve after Ross County (not difficult, admittedly) so if everyone could crank it up a notch again next weekend there's a chance of us keeping this title race alive.

    It is still all to play for. 2005: Celtic won at ibrox to go 5 clear lost 2 of last four and lost title. 1998: Rangers beat celtic at ibrox to go top on goal dufference with four to plsy. Rangers won two, lost two, celtic won 2, drew 2 to win it. Moreover with Rangers and celtic still to play, it is wide open.

  • @BillyMcMorran
    @BillyMcMorran Před 5 dny

    When Clement came in Rangers had already beaten Betis in the Europa with 4 games left to play. We had already reached Hampden and Celtic were eliminated. We were only 7 games in to the league season. Can we stop saying the season was “dead and buried” because it really wasn’t.

    • @BobTap-xn4bw
      @BobTap-xn4bw Před 5 dny

      We had also been beaten by Killie, Aberdeen & Limassol. The majority of fans had turned on the manager, and the players he brought in. The football was chronic, and while there were plenty of games to go, I don’t think many of our fans realistically felt we could claw it back, as we searched for a new manager to take on these players. That’s just my personal opinion of course, but at that point, I couldn’t see anything in the players to suggest we could get back into the race. Cups are a consolation, it’s the league I wanted

    • @FatEck1999
      @FatEck1999 Před 5 dny

      Very fair point, Billy but I think a lot of us certainly felt it was heading that way given the start we handed a Celtic side used to going the distance. Any change of manager involves trauma and upheaval but to do it during the season - even relatively early - usually undermines title chances. No side have ever finished champions of Scotland with a different manager to the one they began the season with. Europe was definitely coming round after a Champions League thrashing but our record at Hampden over the last ten years precluded real confidence in the League Cup.

Agree with that queasy feeling because until Tav swung over that tremendous cross we didn't look like winning that game ...any match where Gogic is man of the match is condemnation enough . The Milton Hotel in Kilbirnie was legendary back in the day, known for that unmistakable whiff of Jamaican woobine as soon as you walked in no one took any notice, probably back then nobody knew what it was.😂

      Ah, a hotel, bar was it, Hugh? Nice one. Cheers, sir. So long ago. Jamaican woodbine? Aye, well my uncle liked his prog rock so this makes sense. Assuming it's no longer there - haven't been in Kilbirnie for ages.

      Damn right, Iamnoone - and as Diego Simeone said, "there's no such thing as 'deserve' when it comes to league titles - you either win it or you don't"

      hello. mate - aye, not a classic season. I just hope we get that heather a bit closer to room temperature than our cross-town rivals... and then it'll suddenly be one of the greatest seasons of my life.

    Stewart is spot on regarding injuries my thoughts are these expensive medical centres have to justify themselves. What are the budgets for this? I’m guessing they’re not cheap.

    The club can’t stop players from expressing themselves that’s just nonsense.
