Arthur Jafa: BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG | 011 | 52 Walker | EXHIBITION PREVIEW
52 Walker's eleventh exhibition, BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG, features a large-scale installation and new and recent paintings, sculptures, and film by Los Angeles-based artist Arthur Jafa (b. 1960). Lauded for his achievements as a filmmaker and cinematographer as well as a visual artist, Jafa has developed an incisive, chameleonic practice, through which he seeks to unravel the cultural significance and strictures ascribed in tandem upon Black existence in the Western world. In BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG, Jafa invokes the body’s personal, political, and industrial guises in one fell swoop, deftly interweaving images and objects to create a forceful and maximal space that beckons toward engulfment and revelation alike.
Jafa’s exhibition at 52 Walker brings to the surface questions of form, force, and resistance- in addition to tensions that result from common slips and errors. The title of the show, BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG, applies strategies of sequencing and juxtaposition, channeling various meanings in its wordplay-including political ideologies, industrial terminologies, and the specter of death-while also nodding to the complexities of the word “black” and its many inflections. Favoring intuitive arrangement over uniformity, the artist eschews traditionally monolithic modes of presentation and instead coheres multiple simultaneous events, applying a decidedly Black and non-Western viewpoint that confronts twentieth-century art historiography and museology’s indebtedness to African aesthetics.
Arthur Jafa: BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG is curated by Ebony L. Haynes and presented by 52 Walker.
Arthur Jafa: BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG was on view from April 05 - June 01, 2024.

This conversation is even better the second time around.
Outstanding. One of the greatest contemporary American artists. ☕️ Brilliant,
I'm so glad that this meeting took place.
“I don’t understand why an image of a suffering black man is any less legitimate than an image of jesus christ” 🤯 heavy…
this was so special
Spectacular
For the longest time I hated her paintings. I thought they profited off the objectification of women - the fact she’s a women artist means little to me. And then I began to look at the backgrounds, how beautiful and far reaching they are and how impossible they are to look at due to these voluptuous, implausible female bodies in the way. I realized her work speaks to the Achilles heel our desire have, how our mentalities prevent us from perceiving. At the same time these women have lives of their own, they are through our perception of them realized, as well all are. I think she is a brilliant artist, many imitators but no one surpasses her.

Fantastic work Lucas; beautiful dialogue.
I think this is soooooo cool
Thank you for this episode, I was filled with questions and wonder and with clarity all at the same time. Definitely subscribed and will listen again 👏 First time listener

Joy Harjo, like Himla Af Klint, is an artist rooted in the Intellect and the Intuitive. Many thanks for this very insightful interpretation and stimulating conversation.
What an amazing conversation! Thank you for this.

Very, very good, if not almost precise, analyses of Richter's oeuvre.
Loved this honest interview

"If nobody has a negative reaction to what you do you not doing anything" damn I needed to hear that
Such beautiful works! Blessings.
THE GREATEST
The negative sayings used to keep me down down bad. Coming out from that and hearing these words just encouraged me to keep on. Thanks Arthur
Saw his piece Apex in NY and immediately was obsessed. Thank you for this video.
I wonder how talks like this fall on non-artist ears. For a painter, this was pure shop talk. His mention of it taking a min. to screw up the courage to allow drawing back in, and the wonderful breakdown of sitting to working ratio and the security guard analogy was an absolute home run. Also really appreciated how he explained his concept of titling his pieces - exactly right - they set the ambiance, but do not throw down a specific subject that the viewer then maps to the abstraction. Great video, really generous with pacing and vivid IMAX level views of the show. Merci!
Well said
I stumbled across a snippet of this on a reel and was immediately drawn in by how he explained the works. He explains in a way that correlates to some of the reasons why we enjoy certain works, but can’t quite express the reason why as simple but elegantly as Joe does. As someone who collects occasionally, understanding the Artist’s thought process is as enjoyable and an integral part of enjoying the work overall.
Marvelous
Really dope
Great execution love your art we know
thank you. Joe is cool. the work is amazing. gotta see this show.
Always glad to see a new Joe video. Soft spoken wisdom!
The white lines are fascinating and a kind of signature so to speak.
Awesome ! Thanks for showing.
👏🏽🙌🏽✊🏽✨
what a treat! thank you David ;p
They can't stop me imma do what imma do yea👍😀
I absolutely love the work. The interplay between line and color. I definitely see the references to Picasso and Miro. Lovely work.
Would have loved to hear him talk more about sitting in the studio AND the drawing / painting connection. What's his keep / toss ratio, for example, in the drawings. I love how decisive and unlabored the drawings look - where do these images come from? Gotta see this show before it leaves.
Very interesting!

I really like what he said at the beginning. I feel like that way of thinking can be applied broadly.
very inspiring
This was great!
Love the conversation and learning abut this artist, what freshness and authenticity. Love the bold color!
Really got lost in this enjoyable exchange, thank you !
awesome. I feel like I stumbled across a small gold mine.
What an interesting conversation and topic. Coincidentally, I have a print of af Klint's "Adulthood" above my computer at all times.
