    I thoroughly enjoyed the film and this video essay. It's about time the younger generations got a look at how Sharon Tate lived, rather than how the media portrayed her by focusing on those who stole her from us. Thank you and Quentin Tarantino both for doing that.

    I think the issue is fans shipping characters that defy the point of the story, and marketing teams exploiting this for a profit. Pitch Perfect is about gender, NOT sexuality so I think it's unfair to criticize the content of the films when it's the business executives and toxic fandom that's the issue. 99% of the time filmmakers have zero control over the marketing after all.

    For me the show lost something when Prue was killed, that sisterhood bond and the dynamic between the three of them just changed. Of course the show changed in other ways as well, I think it just had a darker and different mood in the earlier seasons and later becaume a bit too fluffy for my taste. The earlier seasons had a perfect balance I think.

    I love what you said about Anthony "stealing" her. Sondheim is very intentional with words. He could've said I'll SAVE you, Joanna. He doesn't. I think this is more of a reflection of societies view on women as a whole. Even the sweet and seemingly innocent Anthony has this view on women. The music even hints at this darkness, not just the lyrics. Sondheim is and was a genius. I hated that they sucked Johanna of any character. She is so much deeper than even the people who love the stage version gives her credit for. I see why they chose the actress with the voice they did because the more childlike appearance makes the judge that much creepier considering the absence of "Mea Culpa". Despite it not working as well in a movie, I miss the traditional flighty/ slightly mad bird like sound of the stage Johanna. Overall, the point of the central women being dismissed, in my opinion, was very intentional and a commentary on the societal view of females in general.

    I know this came out 3 years ago BUT i have thoughts 17:01 I agree that this is a sort of superficial way of appreciating a woman as a person-- howver, whenever i listen to it, i feel like it can be interpreted in two ways simultaneously. Judge turpin since about these things as a way of appreciating beauty just for himself, as he is motivated by his lust. Todd is motivated by revenge- but his revenge is driven by love. Not for women in general, just "his girl," Lucy. I feel like from his perspective, its much more sentimental-- like, yes, spending time in a garden or being at the mirror may seem mundane and superficial, but he loves Lucy so much that even the smallest things like blowing out a candle made him love her more.

    The interesting fact not stated in this video. When Aladdin came out, the US was going to invade Iraq. The creators gave the city a different name as a way to distance itself from Bagdad. The story underwent several changes as Aladdin would be closer to 12 with a mother. However, they realized it didn't quite work for the film, but many of the ideas were used in the 2014 Aladdin Broadway show. It can not be remiss that since 1979, the US involvement in the region has been volatile. US relations with Iran were detorating. The US Embassy hostage situation, the Iran/Iraq War in the early 80s, conflict in Beruit, oil embargos, and a plethera of geopolitical conflict. Aladdin was in production before Beauty and the Beast with story changes, character changes, and other creative influences. Long story short, the creators are American looking at the Middle East from Western eyes. Which is very nuanced by region, dialect, politically, and historically. I do not believe anyone on the team was from the region, or if they were, they were not in a position to contribute to the film in a meaningful way. The problem with the live action still has an enmeshment problem. Indian culture is not the same as Arab culture. There may be things that overlap but are very different, culturally and linguistically. The other side of this historical/political coin is Disney was and to some extent, an entertainment powerhouse. Aladdin was the first non-white character/story undertaken in the modern cultural collective for Disney. Aladdin was marketed to young boys to be the hero, which was different from previous "princess" stories. This means Aladdin was fetishized, too.

    I have a question, Is this a way to empathize or villainize Wanda? You have AMAZING points in the video, but you have to consider much more than who she is in Wandavision. Agatha knew the roots of Wanda would either prove good or evil, so she subjected her to a sort of therapy to help her grasp herself, Wanda does later become a villain, but in Wandavision it’s no yet determined (nor is is determined she is a hero either, she is simply a disconnected spectator in her mind) Wanda was born into a home where she was sheltered and kept from dangers, so when that shield was broken she had to meet reality which has always been shown as hard for her, so when that same danger shows itself she rebuilds the shield (the towns people are wrapped into it) Wanda does very sadisticaly deny the claims of control or of corruption the reason she does this is because she still sees her world as a safe place where everyone is happy and with free will much like people when they are children, they believe everyone is happy and is safe. Conclusion : Wanda never got to grow up so when real danger showed up she acted as a child would and drew a perfect world with a sun in the corner and a perfect happy family with simplistic stick bodies, no depth nor background, just happy faces and contentment. She acted like a child because deep down she still has so much to learn and is still a child in a way.

    The under pressure scene was so emotionally affecting for me because of how everything clicked together in that moment. The movie revealed it's hand through its visual and auditory language in a way that blew my mind. In that moment, I realized Sophie was trying desperately to cling to a memory of her father that....wasnt true. She was trying to understand who her father was after he was gone. i mean this is so sad. These two probably would be a thing in the movie if it wasnt for marketing. I mean you can see how after the movie Kendrick and Snows friendship slowly disappeard from the public, now only Snow, kelly and chrisie really posting stuff when they meet up. Really sad how much queerbaiting can affect not only the fandom, but the ship.

  • @welatshaw
    @welatshaw Před 2 měsíci

    Really can't find anything to argue here. The Studio ... not the filmmakers, the STUDIO could have done a positive thing with this film, they could have given the fandom what it really wanted, but they chickened out. And, now, so much time has passed that there's no hope of any kind of continuation, so Pitch Perfect will remain a trilogy, and Bechloe will live only in fanfic, You Tube videos, and the hearts of the fans. Personally, I don't care what Universal claims is or isn't canon, #BechloeIsReal.

    • @nikiaep4668

      i agree! I mean no matter how much we want a PP4 it will never happen, but Bechloe still has a fandom and people that hang onto that ship, and that queerbaiting and bad ending was just mean. That queerbaiting probably made the actors uncomfy and now Brittany and Annas friendship kinda broke, its really sad to see a potantial good friendship be ripped apart.

  • @elliart7432
    @elliart7432 Před 3 měsíci

    I huge contributing factor in this is that Johnny Depp as Todd has such frustratringly muted emotional range. his performance is all style over substance and I hate it. In the actual stage play, Johanna (first of all has more scenes of her own) but second of all feels so much more like a real person simply becuase Sweeney openly _grieves_ her so much. He knows what's happening to his only daughter right down the street and every time he talks about her you see clealry how much pain it causes him that he's helpless to stop it, before spirilling so deep that he's _unable_ to recognize the chance to save her when it arises.

    - Charmed was once a show that championed feminism, but unfortunately, it lost its essence when Constance Burge was removed from the equation. Brad Kern ousted Constance Burge from her own creation, disregarded her vision, and steered the show in a different direction. Constance wanted the show to be about sisterhood and female empowerment, but Brad Kern shifted the focus towards Piper's sons, random love interests, and weird costumes/transformations. As a result, the later seasons of Charmed no longer captured the essence of what made it special.

    I was wondering if the exact opposite can also be true with regard to parents raising children. If passive parents could produce a demanding, and potentially aggressively entitled child, could the reverse also be true? It makes me think that Luise, and especially Bjorn, were raised by aggressive parents with possible domestic violence. They learned to be passive to not upset their parents and provoke a violent reaction. That makes the whole story even more tragic. It could be a childhood trauma defining their adulthood. Very difficult to overcome without therapy. A vicious cycle that was only ended because of their captors.

    1⃣ Since you said you liked horror, it's a little shocking that neither The Pope's Exorcist or Excorcist: Believer made your WORST list - they were definitely worse than The Nun II. 2⃣ Tokyo was not levelled in reality - that's the fictional bit of the movie.

      A good example of two films I didn't see! I almost did see Exorcist: Believer but that was another one where life got in the way and I couldn't make it over. Good point they provably would've made it onto my worst list! On your second point, the Tokyo Bombing post WW2 has its own Wiki article which states: "16 square miles (41 km2; 10,000 acres) of central Tokyo were destroyed, leaving an estimated 100,000 civilians dead and over one million homeless." This is what led to my wording! :) Thanks for commenting and your feedback- really good to hear!

    I will never get over the first one and the fact that every adult in Arendelle should've been thrown UNDER the jail for letting an emotionally stunted CHILD with no social skills beyond servants who worked for her family immediately give their entire kingdom to a random dude she'd known for less than half a day (and majority of their conversations no one was present for) AND ride off alone when she'd never in her life left the castle before to find Elsa. With the only objection/logical concern coming from the movie's #1 hater (the Duke of Weselton) who wasn't even a citizen.. ... and then wanted to be shocked to then find out the only reason Hans was even there was because he had planned and was in the middle of actively trying to unalive both of their last living rightful heirs just so he could be a king...😒

They are there for dreaming.. and sorry, Aladdin and Yasmin are far away from depicting oriental clichees in a negative way..on the contrary it romanticizes the orient in every way.. and if you havent noticed.. there is also brutality in other disney movies like in The Hunchback of Notre Dame ... shove your video into your perma-discriminated *peach* .. for real..

      Hi, I see my analysis has made you very mad - that's okay! :) if my work inspires emotion or reaction, that's awesome! Romanticism can be lovely but reality doesn't necessarily reflect a romantic depiction either, as much as we'd want to and that can end up being quite damaging to the image of a certain culture :) happy new year!
